Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?
Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.
An exercise bike, elliptical or rower
Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.
Weights, racks and benches
Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Bulky furniture and do it yourself demolition material
Accepted with preparation
The convenience centers take bulky construction and demolition material from a resident's own project, collected separately from household trash in heavier duty brown compactors and disposed of at construction and demolition landfills. The county names mattresses, box springs, couches, furniture, tables, carpet pieces, doors, drywall, glass, insulation, mirrors, plaster, sinks, sheetrock, tile, toilets and windows on the accepted list.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. No fee for a Knox County resident bringing their own bulky material from their own property, within one standard pickup load per household per day. Material from a business, a contractor or a commercial generator is not accepted at all, and a load above the daily limit is turned away.
When & how
Bring the load during center hours, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and expect the operators to inspect it before it goes into the bulky compactor.
Get it ready
Cut carpet into small pieces, bag insulation, plaster and tile for easier disposal, and wear gloves when handling glass, mirrors, sinks, toilets or windows because the centers are self service. Leave block, brick, dirt, gravel, sand, stone and shingles at home, because those are refused as too heavy or too slow to unload, and leave greenwaste for a greenwaste facility. Pieces longer than five feet, railroad ties and anything from outside Knox County are also refused.
Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky material list, the electronic waste page or the refrigerant page. The nearest published categories are the bulky material route for furniture and other non hazardous material and the scrap metal pile for a mostly metal machine, so a treadmill or a weight machine is confirmed before it is loaded.
City cost & eligibility
No exercise equipment entry or rate is published by the county, so call the solid waste department on 865-215-5865 and describe the machine. If it is accepted as bulky material or as scrap metal the centers charge no fee for a resident bringing their own material within the daily load limit, but the machine has to fit the same load limit and placement rules.
When & how
Call the department before the machine moves, then bring it to a convenience center during posted hours only if the department confirms the route.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart so it can be handled, separate the metal frame from any plastic or fabric parts, and keep any battery pack or console out of the general load so the battery goes to the rechargeable battery area and the electronics question goes to the department.
Load the vehicle with one standard pickup load per household per day and bring proof of Knox County residency, because a load from outside the county is refused. Separate the material before arrival: household garbage, recyclables, scrap metal, the brown bulky compactor, electronics and the tire pile all have their own place, and the operators inspect loads and turn away anything that does not belong. The centers are for Knox County residents bringing their own residential waste and recycling, with one standard pickup load per household per day on non recyclable waste and unlimited recycling, and they refuse business, rental property and contractor loads, block, brick, dirt, gravel, sand, stone, shingles, railroad ties, greenwaste, pieces longer than five feet, out of county waste and any device that contained refrigerant. Four centers have the thrift store electronics area, which takes only gently used items in good working condition, and the accepted battery and electronics lists can change, so the posted sign governs.

Which option covers a Peloton, spin bike or recumbent bike?+
Choose Exercise bike for one stationary bike, including spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes. Peloton and other brands use the same stationary-bike choice. A treadmill, walking pad and outdoor bicycle are different items, so select their matching options.
How do I book free weights, a weight rack or a bench?+
Enter the combined weight in pounds for your dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Booking rounds that total up to the next 10 lb unit: 25 lb uses three units. Stands, racks and benches are separate items and do not include the loose weights. Add each one that is going.
