Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronics, televisions and batteries

Accepted with preparation

Electronics split by type at the county centers. Four centers have an electronic recycling area operated by America's Thrift Store, which takes gently used small electronics that are in good working condition. Televisions are a different case: the county states they are cost prohibitive to recycle and directs them into the blue trash containers, which go to Class I landfills. Small electronic components go into the garbage compactor or the scrap metal pile depending on metal content, and the centers also have a rechargeable battery recycling area.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No fee for a Knox County resident using the center electronics areas, the blue trash containers for a television, the garbage compactor or scrap metal pile for a small component, or the rechargeable battery recycling area. The thrift store electronics area accepts only items in good working condition, and the county warns that the list of accepted batteries and electronics can change with market conditions, so users should read the posted signs at the center.
When & how
Take electronics to a convenience center during posted hours, and check the posted sign or label at the center before unloading, because the county states that acceptable material in those areas can change and any change will be announced on a sign.
Get it ready
Do not put a portable electronic device with a rechargeable battery in the trash, because the county warns that damaged lithium batteries can cause fires. Keep a television for the blue trash containers, put a small non metal component in the garbage compactor and a mostly metal one in the scrap metal pile, and hand batteries to the rechargeable battery area.

For chemicals, paint and batteries

Chemicals and oil based or lead based paint go to the household hazardous waste facility at 1033 Elm Street, which the city operates on its own hours, and a partially full spray can goes with them. Latex paint may be dried completely and put out with regular garbage. A rechargeable battery or a device holding one never goes in the trash, and the centers keep a rechargeable battery area with a changing accepted list.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Knoxville household self hauls to one of the seven Knox County convenience centers, which charge no fee for a county resident bringing their own residential waste and recycling. The centers are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Wednesday, Sunday and holidays, and they limit non recyclable household waste to one standard pickup load per household per day while letting a resident drop off as much recycling as they wish. Bulky material from a resident's own project goes into a separate heavier duty brown compactor and the accepted list names mattresses, box springs, couches, furniture, tables, carpet, doors, drywall, glass, insulation, mirrors, plaster, sinks, sheetrock, tile, toilets and windows. Scrap metal takes non refrigerant appliances, four centers have a thrift store electronics area for gently used working electronics, televisions go into the blue trash containers, batteries go to the rechargeable battery area, and up to the annual resident limit of tires goes into the tire pile. A device that contained refrigerant is refused at the centers and goes to a scrap metal company, to the City of Knoxville transfer station on Elm Street for a small fee, or to a clean out company, and household chemicals and oil based paint go to the household hazardous waste facility on Elm Street that the city operates on its own hours. Seven county convenience centers for household waste, bulky material, recycling, scrap metal, electronics and tires

Knox County Convenience Centers

Seven locations across Knox County, including 1950 West Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN

Household garbage, bulky construction and demolition material including mattresses, box springs, couches, furniture, tables, carpet, doors, drywall, glass, insulation, mirrors, plaster, sinks, sheetrock, tile, toilets and windows, comprehensive recycling, scrap metal including non refrigerant appliances, electronic areas at four centers, rechargeable batteries and up to the annual resident limit of tires in the tire pile.

The centers are for Knox County residents bringing their own residential waste and recycling, with one standard pickup load per household per day on non recyclable waste and unlimited recycling, and they refuse business, rental property and contractor loads, block, brick, dirt, gravel, sand, stone, shingles, railroad ties, greenwaste, pieces longer than five feet, out of county waste and any device that contained refrigerant. Four centers have the thrift store electronics area, which takes only gently used items in good working condition, and the accepted battery and electronics lists can change, so the posted sign governs.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Wednesday, Sunday and holidays, with gates closing promptly and possible early closings for weather, outages or full containers.

No charge. No fee for a Knox County resident bringing their own residential waste and recycling within the daily load limit, and no fee for the resident tire pile within the annual limit. Business, rental property and contractor material is refused at the centers and has to go to a fee charging facility.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Knoxville.

How much does TV removal cost in Knoxville?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in Knoxville?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where do televisions and computers go in Knoxville?

To a Knox County convenience center, but not to the same place. Four centers have an electronic recycling area run by America's Thrift Store that takes gently used small electronics in good working condition, such as computers, radios, disc players, stereos, speakers, gaming systems and smartphones. A television, by contrast, is directed into the blue trash containers because the county states that televisions are cost prohibitive to recycle. Small components go to the garbage compactor or the scrap metal pile depending on how much metal they contain, and batteries go to the rechargeable battery area.Official guidance

Can I put batteries or a battery device in the trash?

Not if it holds a rechargeable battery. The county warns that a lot of portable electronic devices contain lithium batteries that can cause fires if damaged and asks residents not to throw any rechargeable portable device into the trash, naming hoverboards, robot vacuums and cellular phones as examples. Knox County convenience centers accept a variety of batteries in a rechargeable battery recycling area, and the county notes that the accepted types can change, so check the posted sign at the center.Official guidance

What will the Knox County centers not take?

Business, contractor, rental property and commercial generator material, any load above one standard pickup per household per day, block, brick, dirt, gravel, sand, stone and shingles because they are too heavy or slow to unload, greenwaste which has to go to a greenwaste facility, boards or pieces longer than five feet, railroad ties, and waste from outside Knox County without a Knox plate or proof of residency. A device that contained refrigerant is refused too, and televisions are not recycled there because the county directs them into the blue trash containers.Official guidance
