No appliance rate is published for the heavy trash route, so call Public Works at 281-471-9650 and confirm the item, and note that the Recycle Center refuses appliances that contain refrigerants or CFCs.
When & how
Put the unit on the heavy trash pile by 7 a.m. on the first scheduled day for the zone, empty any refrigerator or freezer and remove or tie the doors, and separate it from brush and yard waste.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, secure the drum, remove or tie shut the doors of a refrigerator or freezer for the safety of neighborhood children, keep bulk metal separate because household bulk metals are collected on the heavy trash route, and keep refrigerant units out of the Recycle Center load.
A heavy trash pile may not exceed 10 cubic yards, which the city describes as about 6 feet wide by 6 feet high by 8 feet long. If a pile is larger the city collects only 10 cubic yards and leaves the remainder, which can put the resident in violation for early set out, so the excess has to wait for the next scheduled collection or go to a private contractor at the resident's expense.
Heavy trash goes behind the curb rather than in the street, in front of the resident's own property and not across the street or in front of a neighbor, away from fences, mailboxes, low wires and low limbs, out by 7 a.m. on the first scheduled collection day and no earlier than five days before. The city is divided into six zones, the truck makes a single pass in the two day window, brush and yard waste stay separate from appliances and furniture, small items go in bags or boxes, and a refrigerator or freezer has to be empty with the doors removed or tied shut.

C St. takes paper, clean plastics, tin and steel cans, aluminum, flattened corrugated and fiberboard boxes, clean glass, small car tires on Saturdays with a limit of two, electronics and rechargeable batteries, automotive batteries, dry hardened paint cans with the lids off and light bulbs in their original packaging, and it also takes motor oil, oil filters, cooking oil and antifreeze. It refuses hazardous waste, asbestos, PCB equipment, appliances with refrigerants, compressed gas cylinders, sealed containers, drums with residues, free flowing fuels, radioactive material, mercury items, medical waste and diapers, styrofoam, plastic film, paper towels and tangling materials, and it is for residents rather than commercial operators.
