A mattress is named in the city's bulky list as an item too large for the container, so it goes out on the monthly brush and bulky collection in its own pile rather than with the brush.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per item charge for the monthly brush and bulky collection, which is part of the sanitation service that collects from Mission households twice every week. Confirm any charge with the Sanitation Department at 956-583-2564.
When & how
Set the mattress in the bulky pile separate from any brush on the Friday to Sunday before your monthly collection week, and have it at the curb by 6 a.m. on the service day.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to material that came from the home, because the city collects nothing from outside the property, and keep the mattress out of the trash container so the lid can shut. Bag and bundle anything loose so it does not scatter.
Mission collects brush once a month and bulky items on the same route, and the city asks for bulky items to be placed in a separate pile from the brush. Brush means tree limbs and shrubbery no longer than ten feet and no more than eight inches in diameter, plus bagged leaves and lawn trimmings, while the bulky pile carries furniture, mattresses, appliances without Freon and other items too large for the container.
The brush and bulky calendar runs by collection week, and the city asks residents to set brush out on the Friday to Sunday before their week. Containers normally go out the night before the service day or by 6 a.m. on the day, with the lid shut and no extra bags beside the container, and the container needs three feet of clearance from fences, mailboxes, utility boxes and vehicles.
The city states that it collects only items originating from the home and no external waste, so material brought in from another property does not belong in the pile. Brush can be dropped free at the city site on South Conway with proof of residency, and landscapers and contractors are excluded from that site.

Mission households usually do not need to self-haul bulky material, because the city collects furniture, mattresses, appliances without Freon and other items too large for the container once a month on the brush and bulky route, with bulky items in a pile separate from the brush. Brush itself can be dropped free at the city site on South Conway with proof of residency, and household recyclables go to the mobile recycling trailers at 15th and Perkins Street or at the sanitation department on Abelino Farias, where the bins are open to the public. Electronics and household hazardous waste are not addressed in the city material and the county publishes no household programme, so those should be confirmed with the Sanitation Department on 956-583-2564 or checked against the regional solid waste and recycling guide before anything is loaded.
