Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

When & how: Put bulky waste beside the trash receptacle no later than 7 a.m. on a regular collection day, because the bulky truck runs with the twice-a-week trash route rather than on a scheduled appointment.
Get it ready: Keep every single item under 150 pounds and the whole set out inside two cubic yards per collection. Tie and bundle brush rather than adding loose brush to the pile, and put loose household debris in a box or disposable container no larger than 2 by 2 by 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, because the city also allows the equivalent of two 35 gallon bags of household project debris.

A refrigerator or freezer is a bulky item only when it is tagged as certifying removal of the refrigerant, which is the one published condition on those units.

City cost & eligibility: No charge. Southlake residential accounts on the CWD service, with a refrigerator or freezer collected inside the bulky allowance once it carries the tag certifying refrigerant removal; no separate unit charge is published.
When & how: Arrange the refrigerant removal and the tag first, then set the unit beside the trash receptacle by 7 a.m. on a regular collection day.
Get it ready: Have the unit tagged as certifying removal of refrigerants before it goes out, empty it, and keep it inside the 150 pound single item cap. Southlake residents using CWD's door-side household hazardous waste and used electronics collection, which the hauler provides up to once a month and includes in the regular monthly trash and recycling charge. Items are scheduled by phone and picked up from the doorstep rather than the curb.
When & how: Call CWD on 972-392-9300 option 2 at least two weeks ahead so the collection kit can be mailed, then follow the kit's schedule and have the material ready at the doorstep on the published collection day rather than at the curb.
Get it ready: Use only the bag CWD provides and keep it closed, place anything that does not fit in the bag inside a cardboard box, keep electronics, auto batteries and fluorescent tubes outside the bag, and tape multiple fluorescent tubes together so they cannot break. Never add pool chemicals, and remember that hazardous waste and electronics are refused in the bulky pile and in the carts.

Brush, leaves and yard waste

City cost & eligibility: No charge. Southlake residential accounts on the CWD service. The tied and bundled brush collection, the call-in loose brush service and the seasonal leaf recycling weeks are part of that service, with no separate charge published.
When & how: Tie and bundle brush and put it beside the trash receptacle by 7 a.m. on a regular collection day, where bundles may not exceed four feet by two feet and 50 pounds each. For loose brush, call CWD on 972-392-9300 option 2 to book the monthly service, which allows up to 12 cubic yards a year and follows the recycling day, and have the pile at the front curb by 7 a.m. on the assigned day. Bagged leaves go out on the published leaf recycling weeks, with more than 20 bags needing a request through Southlake Serves.
Get it ready: Keep every bundle tied, under four feet by two feet and under 50 pounds. Bag leaves rather than binning them, with each bag under 50 pounds and the bags kept separate from household trash, and leave Christmas trees out of the leaf collection because they have their own seasonal program. Bagged leaves may also go out with regular trash all year, but that route does not recycle them.

Remodeling and construction debris

Special rules apply

Small amounts of a homeowner's own project debris ride the bulky collection when they are containerised, while commercial construction, demolition and remodeling debris is refused outright.

City cost & eligibility: No construction rate is published on either page. Household debris has to be containerised to be eligible, in a box or disposable container no larger than 2 by 2 by 4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds, and the city separately allows small amounts of discarded building material up to the equivalent of two 35 gallon plastic bags. Commercial demolition, construction and remodeling debris is not collected at all, so confirm a larger or mixed load with CWD on 972-392-9300 before it is set out.
When & how: Containerise the household material and put it beside the trash receptacle by 7 a.m. on a regular collection day, and arrange any larger project load through a private container rather than the bulky route.
Get it ready: Keep project debris inside the container limit and out of the trash and recycling carts, and never mix commercial demolition or remodeling material into a household pile because CWD refuses that material and the load can be left behind.

Household chemicals and paint

When & how: Call CWD on 972-392-9300 option 2 at least two weeks ahead for the kit, then place the prepared material at the doorstep on the collection day that follows the first or third Wednesday schedule rather than at the curb.
Get it ready: The published accepted list is poison, solvents, oil-based and latex paint, aerosols, used motor oil, auto batteries, fluorescent tubes and televisions. Use only the bag CWD provides, keep items outside the bag in a cardboard box, place fluorescent tubes outside the bag with multiples taped together, and never include pool chemicals because they can start a fire.

Tires, batteries and propane tanks

Not on the regular city route

Tires, batteries and propane tanks are refused in the bulky pile, and neither the city page nor the hauler page publishes a household route for them.

City cost & eligibility: The bulky accepted list ends with the prohibited items, and tires, batteries and propane tanks sit on that list with no drop off or pickup route published on either page. Confirm the current option and any charge with CWD on 972-392-9300 before the item is moved, and keep it out of the bulky pile and the carts in the meantime.
When & how: Do not set these items out with a bulky pile. Call CWD first and follow whatever route the hauler confirms.
Get it ready: Keep tires, batteries and propane tanks off the curb and out of both carts, and do not put them in a container with other debris, because the bulky crew will leave a prohibited item behind.

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Exercise equipment is not named on either list, so it stays a confirm even though a machine under the single item cap can ride the bulky route with the regular collection.

City cost & eligibility: Neither the city page nor the hauler page names a treadmill or weight machine. A machine that fits the bulky rules and weighs under 150 pounds behaves like furniture on the regular collection day, while anything heavier is refused, so confirm the machine with CWD on 972-392-9300 before it goes out.
When & how: Confirm the pickup first, then set the machine beside the trash receptacle by 7 a.m. on a regular collection day if it fits the bulky limits.
Get it ready: Take the console and loose weights off to bring the frame under the 150 pound single item cap, remove any battery, and keep the machine out of the trash and recycling carts.

Bulky waste and tied brush go out with the regular twice-a-week trash collection, not on an appointment, and the set out is limited to two cubic yards per collection with each single item under 150 pounds. Loose household debris has to be containerised in a box no larger than 2 by 2 by 4 feet and under 50 pounds, and anything commercial is refused.

Door-side pickup, never the curb, for chemicals

Household hazardous waste and used electronics move through CWD's door-side collection rather than the bulky pile. Call 972-392-9300 option 2 at least two weeks ahead, wait for the kit in the mail, prepare the material as the kit instructs, and place it near the entrance door or garage in front of the home where it can be seen from the street. Only the provided bag may be used, items outside it go in a cardboard box, fluorescent tubes stay outside the bag with multiples taped together, and pool chemicals must never be included.

Tie and bundle brush, or book the loose brush day

All brush, including storm debris, tree trimmings and landscape waste, has to be tied and bundled for the regular route, with each bundle no larger than four feet by two feet and under 50 pounds, and tied brush may be set out in unlimited quantities. Loose brush needs the monthly call-in service, which allows up to 12 cubic yards a year and follows the recycling day, so call CWD by noon on the Friday before the assigned day and have the pile at the front curb by 7 a.m.

Bagged leaves have their own autumn weeks

The leaf recycling program takes bagged leaves on the published autumn weeks, with the schedule split between the Monday and Thursday trash service and the Tuesday and Friday service. Bags go at the curb by 7 a.m., stay separate from household trash, weigh under 50 pounds each, and hold unmulched leaves in bags of 100 gallons or less or mulched leaves in bags of 55 gallons or less. More than 20 bags needs a request through Southlake Serves, and Christmas trees are not part of this collection.
