City collection Washington County Solid Waste provides residential curbside service that includes up to two waste containers and one recycling container where curbside recycling is available, and additional containers are available for an additional service fee on request. The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

St. George does not collect its own waste. The city's garbage and recycling page hands the program to Washington County Solid Waste, which serves the whole county and bills St. George households through the city utilities department. Curbside service brings up to two waste containers and one recycling container, missed pickups go to Republic Services, and container orders and repairs go to the district office. The county side is where the large items move: the district defines a bulky item as household appliances, furniture, Christmas trees, bicycles, toys and bundled tree limbs, and any qualifying bulky item is removed from the home free of charge by Republic Services on a scheduled pick-up. Appliances are part of that definition, and a resident can also bring a Freon appliance to the landfill with or without an evacuation certificate at no charge, while a business pays a fee for the same unit. The landfill takes construction and demolition debris by the ton and charges a published per tire fee to recycle tires, keeps a bin for computer towers, printers and laptops with their batteries removed, runs a free paint exchange, and hosts the district's two household hazardous waste days each year. Batteries have their own no charge routes: residents take lead acid vehicle batteries to the landfill at no charge and tell the scale house operators on arrival, while Batteries Plus in Washington accepts household chemistries at no charge.

Curbside garbage and BluCan recycling

Accepted with preparation

Washington County Solid Waste provides residential curbside service that includes up to two waste containers and one recycling container where curbside recycling is available, and additional containers are available for an additional service fee on request. The schedule is looked up by address in the district calendar tool.

City cost & eligibility
The district publishes the container allowance and states that additional containers carry an additional service fee, but it publishes no residential collection rate, and a household inside a city is billed through that city's utilities department rather than by the district, so confirm the amount on the utility account or with the district office on 435-673-2813.
When & how
Find the collection day by entering the address in the district schedule tool, then set the containers out for that day. Missed trash or recycling pickups go to Republic Services, and container orders, repairs and replacements go to the district office or the online order and repair form.
Get it ready
Keep the garbage in the containers the district issues and keep the BluCan for cardboard boxes, plastics, aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans and mixed paper such as junk mail, magazines and newspapers, with shredded paper in a clear bag and everything else loose rather than bagged. Keep containers clean and dry, attach lids to bottles to get them recycled, and check a plastic against the district poke test before it goes in the can.

Scheduled bulky item pick-up

Accepted with preparation

The district defines a bulky item as household appliances, furniture, Christmas trees, bicycles, toys, and tree limbs less than six feet long and less than six inches in diameter that are bundled. A resident who wants those items removed from the home calls Republic Services to schedule a bulky item pick-up, and the district states that all items qualifying as bulky are removed at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge for a bulky item pick-up that the district and the hauler accept as qualifying bulky material: household appliances, furniture, Christmas trees, bicycles, toys, and bundled tree limbs under six feet long and under six inches in diameter. The pick-up has to be scheduled with Republic Services on 435-773-4973, and material outside the bulky definition is priced at the landfill instead.
When & how
Call Republic Services on 435-773-4973 to schedule the bulky item pick-up, and leave the items inside the home until the scheduled collection rather than at the curb.
Get it ready
Keep the load inside the bulky definition, bundle tree limbs to under six feet in length and under six inches in diameter, and keep construction debris, tires and anything else the definition does not cover out of the pick-up, because those loads are priced at the landfill instead.

Furniture, couches and sofas

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the district's bulky item definition, so a couch or a sofa is removed from the home by Republic Services on a scheduled bulky pick-up at no charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge for furniture that the district accepts as bulky material, scheduled with Republic Services on 435-773-4973. A household that would rather haul the piece itself can take it to the Washington County Landfill, where a residential load under one ton in a month is free.
When & how
Call Republic Services to schedule the pick-up, or take the piece to the county landfill during its posted hours.
Get it ready
Keep the piece out of the regular garbage containers, keep it dry and whole so it can be carried out, and keep construction material, tires and other non bulky items off the load.
District landfill page with the residential tonnage waiver, the tarp rule, the tire program and prices, the bulky item definition and free pick-up, the safety vest rule, the electronics bin, used oil, paint exchange and the household hazardous waste days

Mattresses

Special rules apply

The district names household appliances, furniture, Christmas trees, bicycles, toys and tree limbs in its bulky item definition and does not name a mattress anywhere here, so the piece is confirmed when the bulky pick-up is arranged.

City cost & eligibility
No mattress rule or mattress rate is published by the city or the district, so call Republic Services on 435-773-4973 to ask whether the piece qualifies as bulky furniture for a free pick-up, or call the district office on 435-673-2813 and ask what the landfill would charge if it does not, since a residential load under one ton in a month is otherwise free.
When & how
Ask about the mattress before it leaves the house, then schedule the bulky pick-up or plan the landfill trip on the answer you get.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and whole, keep it out of the garbage containers, and keep it separate from construction material and tires so the load can be priced correctly if it goes to the landfill.

Appliances and cooling units

Accepted with preparation

Household appliances are named in the bulky item definition, so a qualifying appliance is removed from the home free on a scheduled pick-up. The landfill also takes Freon appliances from a resident with or without a certificate of evacuation at no charge, while a business pays a fee for the same unit, and all other appliances are accepted as regular household waste.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge for a household appliance taken on a scheduled bulky item pick-up through Republic Services on 435-773-4973, and no charge for a resident who brings a Freon appliance to the county landfill with or without a certificate of evacuation. The published fee schedule prices a Freon appliance per unit on the commercial side of the schedule, so a business pays and a resident does not.
When & how
Schedule the bulky pick-up, or take the appliance to the Washington County Landfill during its posted hours and tell the scale house what is in the load.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it out of the garbage containers, and if it holds refrigerant ask the district about the certificate of evacuation before the trip, because the district accepts the unit from a resident either way but a business has to pay.

Computers, electronics and batteries

Accepted with preparation

The county landfill keeps a recycle bin for computer towers, printers and laptops with their batteries removed and asks residents to call about any other electronic item, and the district points to the Best Buy and Staples take-back programs as another option. Batteries have their own routes, with Batteries Plus taking most household batteries free and the landfill taking vehicle batteries free.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The district describes the electronics bin for computer towers, printers and laptops with the batteries removed, the free battery service at Batteries Plus in Washington, and the free lead acid vehicle battery drop at the landfill. No rate is published for the electronics bin, and the district asks residents to call about any item outside the published list, so confirm anything unusual with the district office on 435-673-2813.
When & how
Take the equipment to the Washington County Landfill during posted hours with the batteries removed, or use the Best Buy or Staples take-back programs the district names, and take batteries to the route that matches them.
Get it ready
Remove the batteries from a laptop before it goes in the electronics bin. Rechargeable batteries go to Batteries Plus in Washington with the terminals taped, and they must be under eleven pounds or three hundred watt hours, in sound condition and not a leaking, bulging or recalled unit, and the store will not take electric bike or scooter batteries. The district takes electric bike batteries and car batteries itself, scooter batteries once they are out of the scooter, and lead acid vehicle batteries free at the landfill when the scale house is told. Alkaline batteries go to the Republic Services facility on River Road.

Televisions and monitors

Special rules apply

The district's electronics bin covers computer towers, printers and laptops with the batteries removed and the district asks residents to call about anything else, so a television or monitor has to be confirmed rather than assumed.

City cost & eligibility
No television or monitor rule and no rate is published, so call the district office on 435-673-2813 and ask whether the set can go in the electronics bin or whether it has to go to the landfill as a bulky item on a scheduled pick-up with Republic Services on 435-773-4973.
When & how
Call before the set moves, then use whichever route the district confirms.
Get it ready
Keep the screen out of the regular garbage containers while the route is being confirmed, and keep any battery the set contains separate so it follows the battery routes rather than the electronics bin.

Construction and demolition material

Accepted with preparation

The county landfill takes construction and demolition debris at a published per ton rate, which is the route for remodeling and demolition material that the bulky item pick-up does not cover.

City cost & eligibility
From $32 per ton for construction and demolition debris at the Washington County Landfill, with municipal solid waste at $37.15 per ton, an uncovered load fee of $74.30 as a flat commercial rate, clean dirt and tile at no charge and the transfer station priced at $8.56 per yard. A load delivered to the Washington County Landfill during posted hours. A residential load under one ton in a month is free under the district's residential allowance, any amount above that is charged the municipal solid waste rate, and every load has to be tarped or tied down or the uncovered load fee applies.
When & how
Take the load to the Washington County Landfill, open Monday through Friday from 7 in the morning to 5:30 in the afternoon and Saturday from 7 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon, and arrive early enough to unload and leave by closing time.
Get it ready
Tarp or tie down the load, because an unsecured residential load is charged a fifteen dollar uncovered load fee for each occurrence and a commercial hauler pays a flat rate. Keep clean dirt and tile separate so the load is priced at the right rate, and expect to wear a high visibility safety vest if you leave the vehicle on the working face.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are recycled at the Washington County Landfill for a published price per tire by type, business tires stopped being accepted on February 1, 2025, and the district publishes a per visit limit on resident tires.

City cost & eligibility
From $3.5 per passenger tire at the Washington County Landfill, with a light truck tire at $5.93, a semi truck tire at $18.04 and tires larger than a semi or commercial and off road loads at $342.72 per ton. A resident bringing tires to the Washington County Landfill during posted hours. The district states that state law limits how many tires it may take from a resident at one time, and its own pages publish that limit as eleven tires on the landfill page and twelve on the fee schedule, so the count is confirmed at the scale house. Businesses are no longer accepted for tire disposal.
When & how
Take the tires to the Washington County Landfill during posted hours, and ask at the scale house about the current per visit limit before unloading a large set.
Get it ready
Bring the tires in a tarped or tied down load, keep business tires out of the load because they are no longer accepted, and separate car, light truck and larger tires so each is priced at its own rate.

Household hazardous waste and paint

Accepted with preparation

The district holds household hazardous waste collection days twice a year at the Washington County Landfill, published for 2026 as April 18 and October 17, and it runs a free paint exchange at the landfill for reusable latex paint. Oil based paint, stains, lacquer and the other hazardous items wait for a collection day, while water based and latex paint is dried out at home and put in the regular garbage once it is solid.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for a Washington County resident bringing material from the home to a collection day, with a limit of about twenty gallons or two hundred pounds per household per event. Large quantities from residents and any commercial or contractor load are refused, tires carry a charge at the collection, and a business has to use Veolia Environmental Services on 801-294-7111.
When & how
The 2026 collection days are April 18 and October 17 from 8 in the morning to 12:30 in the afternoon at the Washington County Landfill, 330 N Landfill Rd in Washington, with signs and staff directing traffic. The cutoff time depends on volume and can change.
Get it ready
Only the collection days take aerosol cans, bulging batteries, fuel, herbicides, medical waste, paint thinners, pesticides, propane and solar panels, which the district classifies as hazardous waste. Water based and latex paint has to be dried out at home and then placed in the regular garbage once it is completely solid, and only oil based paint, stains and lacquer go to the event. Paint that is more than a quarter full, in reusable condition and opened within the last two years can go to the free paint exchange at the landfill instead.

BluCan and Binnie recycling

Accepted with preparation

The district runs two recycling programs: the BluCan curbside container that arrives with curbside service, and more than twenty binnie sites around the county with separate containers for glass, paper, plastic and metal, open around the clock.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The BluCan comes with residential curbside service and the binnie sites are open to residents around the clock, with no separate charge published for either. Recyclables are not sorted at the curb for a fee, and the district asks residents to keep items loose rather than bagged so they can be sorted.
When & how
Put the BluCan out on the collection day shown in the district schedule tool, or use a binnie site at any hour, since the sites are open around the clock.
Get it ready
Keep cardboard boxes, plastics, aluminum beverage cans, metal food cans and mixed paper such as junk mail, magazines and newspapers in the BluCan, with shredded paper in a clear bag and everything else loose. At a binnie, separate glass, paper, plastic and metal into their own containers, and note that Diamond Valley, Pine Valley and Utah Tech University do not have a glass bin.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the bulky item definition, the electronics bin list or the fee schedule, so a treadmill or weight machine is confirmed before it moves.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise equipment entry or rate is published, so call Republic Services on 435-773-4973 and ask whether the machine qualifies as bulky material for a free scheduled pick-up, or call the district office on 435-673-2813 and ask what the landfill would charge if it does not qualify.
When & how
Call before the machine leaves the house, then schedule the bulky pick-up or plan the landfill trip on the answer you get.
Get it ready
Take the machine apart as far as it comes apart so it can be carried out, keep any battery or console separate for the electronics and battery routes, and keep it off the load until the route is confirmed.

No charge. Free for a Washington County resident bringing material from the home, with a limit of about twenty gallons or two hundred pounds per household per event. Large quantities from residents and any commercial or contractor load are refused, and tires carry a charge at the collection.
Arrange it
Bring the material to the Washington County Landfill on April 18 or October 17, 2026 between 8 in the morning and 12:30 in the afternoon, and follow the signs and staff directing traffic.

The days run twice a year only, the cutoff time depends on volume and can change, latex paint is not part of this route because it is dried at home, and a business has to use Veolia Environmental Services on 801-294-7111 instead.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The district states that the binnie sites are open around the clock and that residents may deposit recyclables there, with no separate charge published for their use.

Diamond Valley, Pine Valley and Utah Tech University have no glass bin, loose items only because bagged material cannot be sorted, and plastics still have to pass the district poke test and be empty, clean and dry.
