Two views of the same room corner: a treadmill on the left, and a small desk and chair in its place on the right.
A new use for the same space, once the old machine is outside and gone.

Room for what comes next

Your space can have a new purpose.

A home office. Room for a guest. A little more floor to enjoy. When an old machine is in the way, a clear pickup plan makes the next step easier.

The room is changing.

Book the equipment you are ready to let go of, whether it is one exercise bike or several machines. See the total before making the plan.

A replacement is coming.

Check whether your retailer includes removal. If the old treadmill is still your responsibility, give it a pickup day of its own.

It is not making the move.

Settle the price online, arrange to have it outside, and follow the pickup through text updates and completion photos. One less thing to coordinate before the keys change hands.

Match the machine

The right choice covers the right equipment.

Choose by the type of equipment. A brand name does not mean a different item, but a walking pad and a full treadmill do.

Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?

Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.

An exercise bike, elliptical or rower

Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.

Weights, racks and benches

Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Danville does not name exercise machines, but the city defines bulk debris as oversized items such as furniture, mattresses, carpeting and swing sets, so a treadmill or exercise bike that will not fit the cart follows that route and counts toward the four large items allowed each week.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential solid waste service when the item fits the city's large bulk debris definition and stays inside the four item weekly limit. No separate charge is published.
When & how
Weekly on the scheduled garbage day, out before 7 a.m. or the evening before.
Get it ready
Reduce the machine as far as it will go and keep the pieces clear of sidewalks and storm drains. If Public Works would not read the item as large bulk debris, confirm the route on 434-799-5245 before the collection day.
Bulk debris page with the four large items per week allowance at no extra cost, the definition naming furniture, mattresses, box springs, carpeting, swing sets and bicycles, the weekly same day pickup, the behind the curb line placement and the reduce as small as possible instructionResidential solid waste collection guidelines revised July 2026 with the cart rules, the bulk debris definition and its exclusion of large appliances, the appointment appliance fees, the free E-Recycling Center that refuses televisions and CRTs, the four drop off recycling centers and their refusals, the $52 curbside recycling subscription, the tire fees at the Public Works Complex, the trailer rental rules and fees, the no construction debris rule and the compost site location and hours

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Put bulk debris out the night before or before 7 a.m.

Bulk debris moves on your normal household garbage day, not on a separate appointment. Have the load behind the curb line or at the property line before 7 a.m. on the collection day, or put it out the evening before, and remember that a household may set out no more than four large items in one week.

Reduce the load and keep it clear of sidewalks and storm drains

The city asks that bulk debris be reduced as small as possible before it goes out, and that nothing blocks a sidewalk or a storm drain. Place it in the same spot as the cart rather than in a center median, and keep small debris such as lamps and small appliances inside the approved cart, because the city does not collect small debris left outside it.

Use the weekly curbside bulk debris pickup

A Danville household with a couch, a mattress, carpeting, a swing set or another oversized item that will not fit the city cart.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Included in the residential solid waste service billed monthly on the city utility bill, with no separate charge published for up to four large bulk debris items a week.
Arrange it
Set the items behind the curb line or at the property line before 7 a.m. on your normal garbage day, or the evening before, and reduce them as small as possible.

Four large items a week, and the city counts only items too large for the cart as large bulk debris. Large appliances are excluded from this route and need an appointment, and construction debris, tires, hazardous waste, bricks, blocks, stone, dirt and auto parts are never collected.

Rent a city trailer for a larger load

A Danville household with more bulky items than a single weekly set out allows, or a yard waste load that needs its own container.

Cost & conditions
From $75 for for a yard waste only load, with a mixed debris load charged at the higher published rate and the fee paid in advance. Reservation only and available to City of Danville residential users. The trailer is parked at the property from Monday to Thursday, or from Friday to Monday, and the resident loads it.
Arrange it
Reserve an 18 cubic yard trailer or a bucket truck through Public Works on 434-799-5245, then load it yourself during the scheduled window.

The trailer cannot be loaded with tires, batteries, large appliances, contractor debris, bricks, cinder blocks, rocks, dirt, paint or hazardous materials. The rentals web page says costs vary and directs callers to Public Works, while the July 2026 brochure publishes the yard waste only and mixed debris prices, so confirm the current charge when you reserve.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Danville's self haul options are the programs the city still runs rather than a public landfill, because the city landfill beyond the airport is closed. Electronics go to the free E-Recycling Center inside the Public Works Complex at 998 South Boston Road, but that center refuses televisions and CRTs, so a television needs a call to Public Works first. Tires are taken to the same complex and pay a disposal fee there. Yard waste and leaves go to the compost site on Stinson Drive off Airport Road, behind the Danville Regional Airport, where loads are weighed, paid for by credit card only and charged by weight or by the cubic yard, while mulch is free to anyone. The four drop off recycling centers take loose clean recyclables only and refuse sharps, automotive parts and fluids, batteries and bulbs, and the city publishes no set hours for them. Construction and remodeling debris has no city site at all, so it has to reach an approved disposal facility through the contractor or the property owner. Residential solid waste collection guidelines revised July 2026 with the cart rules, the bulk debris definition and its exclusion of large appliances, the appointment appliance fees, the free E-Recycling Center that refuses televisions and CRTs, the four drop off recycling centers and their refusals, the $52 curbside recycling subscription, the tire fees at the Public Works Complex, the trailer rental rules and fees, the no construction debris rule and the compost site location and hoursCompost and mulch page with the facility on Stinson Drive off Airport Road behind the Danville Regional Airport and beyond the closed landfill, the $50 per ton and $10 per cubic yard charge with a $10 minimum payable by credit card only, the free mulch pickup and the seasonal Tuesday to Saturday and Monday to Friday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.Recycling page with the four drop off sites named as Danville Mall, the Ollies site in Kings Fairground Plaza, Ballou Park Shopping Center and South Boston Road at Halifax Road, the accepted recyclable list and the $52 annual curbside subscription on the first and third ThursdayWaste not collected by sanitation crews page listing hazardous waste, tires, construction, demolition, remodeling and rehabilitation debris, bricks, blocks, stone and dirt, auto parts, human or animal waste, urine, propane fuel tanks and hypodermic syringes

Will you dismantle my treadmill or carry it out of the basement?

Which option covers a Peloton, spin bike or recumbent bike?

How do I book free weights, a weight rack or a bench?

Enter the combined weight in pounds for your dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Booking rounds that total up to the next 10 lb unit: 25 lb uses three units. Stands, racks and benches are separate items and do not include the loose weights. Add each one that is going.

Does Danville collect a treadmill at the curb?

It can go out as large bulk debris when it is too big for the cart, inside the four large items allowed each week. Reduce it as far as possible, and confirm with Public Works if the crew might not read it as bulk debris.Official guidance

How does Danville collect trash and bulky items?

Household garbage goes inside the approved city cart once a week, and oversized items such as furniture, mattresses and carpeting go out the same day as large bulk debris within a four item weekly limit.
