You want to know it is handled.
When the next collection does not fit your plans, choose a Dropcurb pickup day. Updates keep you informed, and completion photos show when the booked items are gone.
A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.
Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Furniture and other items too large for a city cart are collected from the curb on your regular collection day by the crane truck, with nothing to schedule and no per item invoice. A couch, a recliner, a dresser or a dining table all leave the same way.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City collection addresses on the weekly route, where bulky items are part of the service funded through the annual tax assessment, so a piece set out on collection day is not billed per item.
When & how
Put the piece behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your collection day, in an open area the crane truck can reach.
Get it ready
Keep the piece away from parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines, fire hydrants and the cart set-out spot, and make sure nothing is stacked on top of it. The city asks that large items sit in the open rather than against a fence, hedge or building where the arm cannot reach.
A mattress and box spring are too big for a city cart, so they go out with the bulky items on your regular collection day, and the county transfer station prices a mattress and box spring as a single piece if you would rather haul it yourself.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City collection addresses, where a piece that will not fit a cart rides with the weekly bulky item service funded through the tax assessment. Mattresses are not named on the city item lists, so call the refuse and recycling line if you want the route confirmed for your address before the mattress goes out.
When & how
Out behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your collection day, in the same open spot you would use for a couch.
Get it ready
Place the mattress flat in the open, clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs and fire hydrants, and keep it out of the cart set-out area so the crane arm has a clean approach.
Refrigerators, stoves, water heaters and air conditioners
Accepted with preparation
Large household appliances are named on the city large item list: refrigerators, freezers, stoves, water heaters, air conditioners and microwaves all go out behind the curb on your collection day, and the doors come off before the unit leaves the house.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. City collection addresses, where large appliances ride with the weekly bulky item service funded through the tax assessment rather than being billed per unit. An appliance hauled to the county transfer station instead carries a per unit charge when it holds a refrigerant or a capacitor.
When & how
Out no more than 24 hours before your collection day, standing upright in the open where the crane truck can reach it.
Get it ready
Remove the doors before the appliance goes to the curb, empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer, tape or tie the doors and drawers so nothing swings open during handling, and leave the unit clear of the carts and of parked cars.
The city collects construction debris that the household itself generates, and it takes nothing that a contractor produces. Renovation debris, construction material, fencing and debris from hired tree or landscaping work belong to the contractor who made them.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Material generated by the household at a city collection address, where the service is funded through the tax assessment. The city guide and the city trash page both state that waste made by a contractor is that contractor's to remove, and they name renovation debris, construction materials and fencing among the material the city leaves alone.
When & how
Put household generated material out with the bulky items no more than 24 hours before your collection day. A heavier or dirtier load can be taken to the county transfer station during residential hours, where it is weighed and priced by the ton.
Get it ready
Keep a contractor's debris off the curb entirely and settle removal with the contractor before the work starts. Where you haul your own material, separate clean brick, concrete, dirt and rock from mixed bulk because the county prices those separately and limits them to small daily amounts per household, and keep anything that was bagged as household trash in the bag stream rather than in the bulk load.
A treadmill or weight machine is not named on the city item lists, so treat it as a bulky item and confirm before it goes to the curb, or take it to the county transfer station where it is priced as bulk waste.
City cost & eligibility
The city names furniture, appliances, car parts, storm doors and windows among its large items, and an exercise machine is judged by the same test of being too large for a cart rather than by a named listing. Call the refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 before the machine goes out, or plan a self-haul to the county transfer station on West Ox Road, where the load is weighed and priced by the ton or by volume at the gate.
When & how
Ask the city first, then set the machine out with the bulky items inside the 24 hour window if the route is confirmed, or take it to the county station during residential hours.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, keep the weights and hardware with the frame so the load stays manageable, and leave it where the crane truck has a clear approach.
Tires need their own route rather than a spot in the trash cart. The county transfer station takes up to ten passenger or light truck tires from a household, and it charges them per tire rather than by weight.
City cost & eligibility
$14 per passenger or light truck tire for the first ten tires on a residential drop-off at the I-66 Transfer Station, on a scale free lane. Household drop-off at the county transfer station, where the city sends residents and where proof of a city address may be requested. Businesses and commercial collectors are outside the program, and commercial tire disposal at the site is suspended.
When & how
Deliver tires during residential hours at the I-66 Transfer Station, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city plan describes curbside tire acceptance from residents only in general terms, so ask the refuse and recycling line whether a tire can ride with a bulky item collection at your address.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the trash cart and out of the recycling cart, bring them whole and clean of rims if you can, and stay within the ten tire household limit for one drop-off.
Loads of mixed household material that no cart will hold go to the county transfer station on West Ox Road, where bulk waste is priced by weight or by volume and single pieces have their own flat charges. Separated recyclables and food scraps are taken at the same site without charge.
City cost & eligibility
From $39 for the minimum charge on a bulk or unbagged residential load at the I-66 Transfer Station, with mixed waste at $98 per ton and bagged trash at $21 for one to five bags or $28 for six to ten bags. Single pieces are charged flat: a dresser or desk, sleep sofa, sofa, love seat, recliner, chair, dining room table, carpet or pad, and a mattress and box spring at $17 each, a small single item at $11, and an appliance that needs refrigerant or capacitor removal at $15 each. Brick, concrete, dirt and rock are $109 per ton with a $49 minimum and a small daily limit per household. Residential loads at the county transfer station, where the city directs its residents and where proof of a city address may be requested. The published residential schedule is written for county households, so confirm the rate at the gate if the address on your identification is a city one.
When & how
Drop the load during residential hours, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and go through the scales when the load is priced by weight.
Get it ready
Sort what the county charges separately: white goods holding refrigerant, tires, brick and concrete, and clean recyclables each follow their own lane. Keep recyclables, metals, cardboard and food scraps out of the bulk pile so they are taken without charge, and cover a loose load so nothing blows out on the road.
Carts and bags go out no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day, as early as dusk the night before, and come back in by 8 p.m. that evening. Anything too large for a cart, from a couch to a water heater, goes behind the curb no more than 24 hours before the same collection day, in an open spot the crane truck can reach. Keep the spot clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines and fire hydrants, remove the doors from appliances before they go out, and keep sidewalks, storm drains and utility covers clear.
The city tells its residents to use the Fairfax County drop-off centers with an ID or utility bill showing the city address, which is the route for electronics, household hazardous waste, glass, compost and any load too big for the curb. The main site is the I-66 Transfer Station at 4618 West Ox Road in Fairfax, with a second household hazardous waste and electronics site at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton. Trash and recycling drop-off runs seven days, while the electronics and hazardous waste area opens six days and closes on Wednesday, so check the hours before you load the car. The county publishes its residential item charges and may ask for proof of residency at the gate.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Set bulky items out with your city collection
A city household with a couch, a mattress, an appliance or a pile of household material that will not fit in a cart, and no need to drive anywhere.
Cost & conditions
No charge. Single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes on the city collection route, where the bulky item service is funded through the annual tax assessment rather than billed per piece.
Arrange it
Put the item behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your regular collection day, in the open where the crane truck can reach it, and leave it there until the crew has been by.
Electronics, batteries, paint, chemicals, tires and anything a contractor generated are outside this route, and the city does not collect on ten holidays, so a collection day that lands on a holiday moves to the next day.

Before you book
A few things worth knowing.
Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Fairfax.
How much does bulk junk removal cost in Fairfax?+
A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.
Can you pick up bags of junk today?+
Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.
Do I count every object inside a bag or box?+
No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.
Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?+
Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.
Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?+
Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.
Does the city pick up a couch from the curb in Fairfax?+
Yes. A couch is named on the city list of items too large for a waste container, and it is collected from behind the curb on your regular collection day with the crane truck. Set it out no more than 24 hours before that day and keep it clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines and fire hydrants. The refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 answers address specific questions.Official guidance
Will the city take a mattress from the curb in Fairfax?+
A mattress and box spring are handled as a large item because neither fits a city cart, so they are set out behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your collection day with the other bulky material. Mattresses are not listed by name on the city item lists, so the refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 is the place to confirm the route for your address. A self-hauled mattress and box spring is a priced piece at the county transfer station on West Ox Road.Official guidance
Can the city take a refrigerator or an air conditioner?+
Yes. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, water heaters and microwaves are all named on the city list of appliances too large for a waste container, and they are collected from behind the curb on your regular collection day. Remove the doors before the unit goes out, and empty and defrost anything with a freezer compartment. If you haul the unit to the county transfer station instead, an appliance that needs refrigerant or capacitor removal is a priced item there.Official guidance
Will the city take renovation debris from my curb in Fairfax?+
The city collects construction debris that your own household generates and collects nothing that a hired contractor produces. The city guide and trash page name renovation debris, construction materials, fencing and debris from contracted tree or landscaping work as the contractor's responsibility, so write removal into the project before work begins. Household generated material goes out with the bulky items within 24 hours of your collection day, and a heavier load can be taken to the county transfer station on West Ox Road, where it is weighed and priced by the ton.Official guidance
Will the city collect a treadmill or a weight bench?+
Exercise equipment is not named on the city large item list, so call the refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 before it goes out. If the route is confirmed, the machine goes behind the curb with the other bulky items no more than 24 hours before your collection day. Otherwise a self-hauled machine is priced as bulk waste by weight or volume at the county transfer station on West Ox Road.Official guidance
Where can I take used tires in Fairfax?+
A household can take up to ten passenger or light truck tires to the I-66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road during residential hours, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and each tire is charged on a scale free lane. The city solid waste plan describes resident tire acceptance at the curb only in general terms, so call the refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 if you want to know whether yours can go out with a bulky item collection.Official guidance
Can I take a load of junk to the transfer station myself?+
Yes. The I-66 Transfer Station at 4618 West Ox Road takes residential loads during the week and on weekends, and the city tells its residents to bring an ID or utility bill with a city address. Mixed bulk waste is weighed and priced by the ton with a minimum charge, bagged trash is priced by the bag, and single pieces such as a sofa, a dresser or a mattress and box spring carry a flat charge. Pay by card, digital wallet, cash or check, and keep recyclables separate because separated material is taken without charge. The site answers on 703-631-1179.Official guidance
Are Fairfax bulky item pickups charged per item?+
The city curbside program is funded through the annual tax assessment rather than a per set-out bill, so a couch, a mattress, an appliance or a pile of household material set out on your collection day is not invoiced as a separate item. A load you take to the Fairfax County drop-off centers yourself is priced there, with a minimum charge on bulk waste, per bag rates for bagged trash, and flat per piece charges for furniture, mattresses, small items and appliances needing refrigerant removal. Dropcurb prices a booking separately and shows your total before you pay.Official guidance
Do apartments and condos get city trash collection?+
The city collects from single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes, which receive the service through the annual tax assessment with no call-in. Multifamily buildings and commercial properties contract directly with private haulers, so a resident of an apartment or condominium asks the building management which company handles the property and what it takes, and can still use the county drop-off centers for electronics, hazardous waste and a self-hauled load.Official guidance
What are the drop-off center hours in Fairfax?+
Trash and recycling drop-off at the I-66 Transfer Station runs Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The household hazardous waste and electronics area opens six days and is closed on Wednesday, with Tuesday and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton takes hazardous waste and electronics on Wednesday and Saturday only, and the site answers on 703-631-1179.Official guidance
