Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.
Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

When & how
Put the piece behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your collection day, in an open area the crane truck can reach.
Get it ready
Keep the piece away from parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines, fire hydrants and the cart set-out spot, and make sure nothing is stacked on top of it. The city asks that large items sit in the open rather than against a fence, hedge or building where the arm cannot reach.
Carts and bags go out no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day, as early as dusk the night before, and come back in by 8 p.m. that evening. Anything too large for a cart, from a couch to a water heater, goes behind the curb no more than 24 hours before the same collection day, in an open spot the crane truck can reach. Keep the spot clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines and fire hydrants, remove the doors from appliances before they go out, and keep sidewalks, storm drains and utility covers clear.

Electronics, batteries, paint, chemicals, tires and anything a contractor generated are outside this route, and the city does not collect on ten holidays, so a collection day that lands on a holiday moves to the next day.

From $39 for the minimum charge on a bulk or unbagged residential load at the I-66 Transfer Station, with mixed waste at $98 per ton, bagged trash at $21 for one to five bags or $28 for six to ten bags, and flat per item charges of $17 for a sofa, love seat, recliner, chair, dresser, desk, dining table, carpet or mattress and box spring, $15 for an appliance that needs refrigerant or capacitor removal, $11 for a small single item and $14 per passenger tire. Residential loads at the county centers, which the city directs its residents to with proof of a city address. The published residential schedule is written for county households, and separated recyclables, household electronics and household hazardous waste are taken free of charge at the same sites.
Arrange it
Load the car or truck, bring an ID or utility bill with the city address, and follow the site lanes: recyclables and food scraps in their own area, electronics and hazardous waste at their station, and weighed material through the scales.
The electronics and hazardous waste area at I-66 is closed on Wednesday, tires are capped at ten passenger or light truck tires per household, brick, concrete, dirt and rock are limited to small daily amounts and priced higher than mixed bulk, and commercial hazardous waste and commercial drop-off are refused.
