Bags & household clutter in FairfaxCity collection The city collects trash, recycling and yard waste once a week on your assigned day. No charge. The local disposal guide
The City of Fairfax runs its own curbside program for single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes: trash, recycling and yard waste once a week, plus bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, appliances and resident-generated construction debris, all funded through the annual tax assessment rather than a separate collection bill. Anything too large for a city cart goes out behind the curb on your regular collection day inside a 24 hour window, and the crews run a crane truck, so a couch, a stove or a water heater does not need a special appointment. Electronics, batteries, paint and chemicals stay out of both curbside streams. The city directs those to the Fairfax County drop-off centers, chiefly the I-66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road, which takes household electronics and household hazardous waste free of charge, publishes a per item charge for self-hauled pieces such as a mattress, a sofa or an appliance needing refrigerant removal, and asks for proof of a city address at the gate.

Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, phones, cables and gaming devices are kept out of the trash and the recycling cart and dropped at the county e-cycling station, which takes them from households without charge.
The city collects construction debris that the household itself generates, and it takes nothing that a contractor produces. Renovation debris, construction material, fencing and debris from hired tree or landscaping work belong to the contractor who made them.
A treadmill or weight machine is not named on the city item lists, so treat it as a bulky item and confirm before it goes to the curb, or take it to the county transfer station where it is priced as bulk waste.
Tires need their own route rather than a spot in the trash cart. The county transfer station takes up to ten passenger or light truck tires from a household, and it charges them per tire rather than by weight.
Loads of mixed household material that no cart will hold go to the county transfer station on West Ox Road, where bulk waste is priced by weight or by volume and single pieces have their own flat charges. Separated recyclables and food scraps are taken at the same site without charge.
Paint, thinner, pesticides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, batteries, light bulbs and propane tanks up to 20 pounds go to the county household hazardous waste collection rather than into a cart or down a drain.
The handoff matters
Carts and bags go out no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day, as early as dusk the night before, and come back in by 8 p.m. that evening. Anything too large for a cart, from a couch to a water heater, goes behind the curb no more than 24 hours before the same collection day, in an open spot the crane truck can reach. Keep the spot clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines and fire hydrants, remove the doors from appliances before they go out, and keep sidewalks, storm drains and utility covers clear.

Yard waste goes in reusable containers, paper bags or bundles of branches cut to 4 feet or less, and a plastic bag of leaves is tagged and left at the curb. Invasive plants such as English ivy and bamboo go in the trash rather than the yard waste pile, and batteries, electronics, paint and chemicals stay out of both carts because a battery can set a collection truck on fire.

Yes. A couch is named on the city list of items too large for a waste container, and it is collected from behind the curb on your regular collection day with the crane truck. Set it out no more than 24 hours before that day and keep it clear of parked vehicles, low hanging limbs, power lines and fire hydrants. The refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 answers address specific questions.Official guidance
A mattress and box spring are handled as a large item because neither fits a city cart, so they are set out behind the curb no more than 24 hours before your collection day with the other bulky material. Mattresses are not listed by name on the city item lists, so the refuse and recycling line at 703-385-7837 is the place to confirm the route for your address. A self-hauled mattress and box spring is a priced piece at the county transfer station on West Ox Road.Official guidance
Yes. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, water heaters and microwaves are all named on the city list of appliances too large for a waste container, and they are collected from behind the curb on your regular collection day. Remove the doors before the unit goes out, and empty and defrost anything with a freezer compartment. If you haul the unit to the county transfer station instead, an appliance that needs refrigerant or capacitor removal is a priced item there.Official guidance
To the county e-cycling station at the I-66 Transfer Station, 4618 West Ox Road, where household electronics are taken without charge. The list covers televisions, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, hard drives, keyboards, mice, cables, phones, cameras, gaming devices, VCRs, audio equipment and solar panels. Take the batteries out, wipe personal data first, stay within ten large items for one household drop-off, and check the hours before the trip because the electronics area is closed on Wednesday. The station answers on 703-631-1179.Official guidance
The city curbside program is funded through the annual tax assessment rather than a per set-out bill, so a couch, a mattress, an appliance or a pile of household material set out on your collection day is not invoiced as a separate item. A load you take to the Fairfax County drop-off centers yourself is priced there, with a minimum charge on bulk waste, per bag rates for bagged trash, and flat per piece charges for furniture, mattresses, small items and appliances needing refrigerant removal. Dropcurb prices a booking separately and shows your total before you pay.Official guidance
The city collects from single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes, which receive the service through the annual tax assessment with no call-in. Multifamily buildings and commercial properties contract directly with private haulers, so a resident of an apartment or condominium asks the building management which company handles the property and what it takes, and can still use the county drop-off centers for electronics, hazardous waste and a self-hauled load.Official guidance
Trash and recycling drop-off at the I-66 Transfer Station runs Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The household hazardous waste and electronics area opens six days and is closed on Wednesday, with Tuesday and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton takes hazardous waste and electronics on Wednesday and Saturday only, and the site answers on 703-631-1179.Official guidance
