A separate monitor and tower count separately. Small devices and cables have their own box option. Choose what is actually leaving so your price matches the pickup.

Monitor, desktop or laptop.

Choose Computer monitor for each separate display. Desktop computer covers one tower or one all-in-one computer. A laptop is its own item. Add only the devices going.

Printer or office copier.

A printer with a built-in scanner belongs under Printer. A floor-standing copy machine belongs under Office copier. The shape matters more than the brand.

Televisions, computers and household electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, phones, cables and gaming devices are kept out of the trash and the recycling cart and dropped at the county e-cycling station, which takes them from households without charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Household electronics delivered to the county e-cycling station, which the city guide and the city hazardous waste page both direct city residents to. The station serves households, so a home based business is outside the program, and a household is asked to stay within ten large items per drop-off.
When & how
The electronics and hazardous waste area at the I-66 Transfer Station opens six days a week and is closed on Wednesday, with Tuesday and Thursday running from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the other open days starting at 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from computers, phones and drives before the trip, take batteries out of the devices so the cells can be handled separately, and keep electronics out of both curbside carts because lithium cells can start a fire in the truck.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Keep the three streams honest

Recyclables go loose in the blue cart, never in plastic bags, and glass is not part of the curbside program: bottles and jars go to a Purple Can Club bin or into the trash. Yard waste goes in reusable containers, paper bags or bundles of branches cut to 4 feet or less, and a plastic bag of leaves is tagged and left at the curb. Invasive plants such as English ivy and bamboo go in the trash rather than the yard waste pile, and batteries, electronics, paint and chemicals stay out of both carts because a battery can set a collection truck on fire.

Bring a city ID to the county centers

The city tells its residents to use the Fairfax County drop-off centers with an ID or utility bill showing the city address, which is the route for electronics, household hazardous waste, glass, compost and any load too big for the curb. The main site is the I-66 Transfer Station at 4618 West Ox Road in Fairfax, with a second household hazardous waste and electronics site at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton. Trash and recycling drop-off runs seven days, while the electronics and hazardous waste area opens six days and closes on Wednesday, so check the hours before you load the car. The county publishes its residential item charges and may ask for proof of residency at the gate.

Haul it to the county drop-off centers

A city household that would rather not wait for the truck, has electronics or hazardous waste to clear out, or has a load bigger than the curb service handles.

Cost & conditions
From $39 for the minimum charge on a bulk or unbagged residential load at the I-66 Transfer Station, with mixed waste at $98 per ton, bagged trash at $21 for one to five bags or $28 for six to ten bags, and flat per item charges of $17 for a sofa, love seat, recliner, chair, dresser, desk, dining table, carpet or mattress and box spring, $15 for an appliance that needs refrigerant or capacitor removal, $11 for a small single item and $14 per passenger tire. Residential loads at the county centers, which the city directs its residents to with proof of a city address. The published residential schedule is written for county households, and separated recyclables, household electronics and household hazardous waste are taken free of charge at the same sites.
Arrange it
Load the car or truck, bring an ID or utility bill with the city address, and follow the site lanes: recyclables and food scraps in their own area, electronics and hazardous waste at their station, and weighed material through the scales.

The electronics and hazardous waste area at I-66 is closed on Wednesday, tires are capped at ten passenger or light truck tires per household, brick, concrete, dirt and rock are limited to small daily amounts and priced higher than mixed bulk, and commercial hazardous waste and commercial drop-off are refused.
