The local disposal guide
Herndon runs its own curbside collection, so the town's rules apply before any county program. Everyday trash goes in the town cart; couches, mattresses, appliances, metal items and light construction debris are requested as a paid special collection, while electronics and hazardous waste go to the Fairfax County facility on West Ox Road.

Town special collection lists large appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers and refrigerators, up to 100 pounds per item. Doors that could trap a person must be removed before set out.
The town does not collect electronics or hazardous waste at the curb. Residents take televisions, computers and similar devices to the Fairfax County e-cycling station at the I-66 Transfer Station.
Town special collection lists construction and demolition debris such as toilets, sinks, cabinets, fencing, shingles, lumber, carpet and flooring, up to 100 pounds per item and only when the town does not deem it unacceptable.
The town special collection takes small amounts of scrap metal that contain no household hazardous waste, such as lawn mowers, car parts and bed frames, up to 50 pounds per item. Metal exercise equipment qualifies only up to that limit.

Put approved items at the curb or an approved location by 6 a.m. and no earlier than 24 hours before the requested day. Special collections run only Wednesday through Friday and are not offered in the week of Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year.
