Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

No charge. City of Suffolk residential addresses using the city issued can service, with furniture inside the twelve special pick-ups a service year and within the twelve cubic yard pile limit; a pile larger than that limit carries the charge described on the special pick-up option.
When & how
Put the furniture at the curb no earlier than twenty four hours before the regular collection day and leave it beside the can, because special pick-up does not need to be scheduled and the same weekly collection covers it.
Get it ready
Keep the pile within twelve cubic yards, about six feet by six feet by nine feet, keep household trash bags out of the pile because they are not collected as special pick-up, and cut any tree limbs to under six feet long and no more than twenty four inches in diameter.
Refuse is collected weekly and residents place disposable material in the city issued curbside can. Under the SPSA SORT system that began on July 1, 2026, trash and recyclable material may go together in either the green trash can or the blue recycling can, and the sorting happens at the authority's regional facility. The service is billed twice each year on the real estate tax bill, can repairs and missed collections are reported through the city forms or on 757-514-7630, and the refuse holiday calendar shows Veterans Day as the day with no trash collection.
