The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Suffolk collects refuse weekly in a city issued can and takes bulky material through a free Special Pick-Up service rather than an appointment hotline, so a household simply puts the pile out beside the can and the same weekly crew takes it. Residents receive up to twelve special pick-ups a service year, running from July 1 to June 30, and the accepted list names appliances, boxes, debris, furniture, mattresses and yard waste, with piles capped at twelve cubic yards and placed out no earlier than twenty four hours before the collection day. A pile larger than that limit carries a charge paid in advance. Trash collection itself is billed twice a year on the real estate tax bill, and from July 1, 2026 the city moved to the regional SPSA SORT system, where trash and recyclables may go together into either the green trash can or the blue recycling can and the sorting happens at the authority's facility. Tires, electronics, batteries and household hazardous waste are handled at the periodic Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day, where a Suffolk ID is required for tires and hazardous waste.

Construction and renovation debris

Special rules apply

The special pick-up list names debris without defining it, so a renovation load has to be confirmed with the Refuse Division.

Call 757-514-7630, and if the machine is accepted put it in a pile no larger than twelve cubic yards at the curb within twenty four hours of the collection day.

What can go in a special pick-up pile?

From July 1, 2026 the city moved to the regional SPSA SORT system, so residents no longer need to separate household trash and recyclables at the curb: both may go into either the green trash can or the blue recycling can, and the material is sorted at the authority's regional processing facility using technology such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cameras and air separation systems.Official guidance

What is accepted at the Recycling Drive?

Tires of twenty two inches or less without rims with a Suffolk ID, household hazardous waste with an ID and the city's accepted list, and recycled materials including batteries, plastic bottles numbered 1 and 2, cardboard, computers, cordless tools, electronics, flat screen televisions of 42 inches or less, small furniture, clothing and shoes, glass, paper and magazines, plastic bags, plant pots, aluminum and tin cans and scrap metal. The drive also handles unserviceable United States flags, food and toiletry donations, eyeglasses and hearing aids and document shredding, and televisions with tubes are refused because they may go out with the regular trash instead.Official guidance
