Bags & household clutter in BellinghamCity collection A Bellingham household chooses weekly, every-other-week or monthly garbage collection in an SSC cart, and every-other-week recycling is included with the service at every frequency. The operator sets the collection rate and does not publish it online, and the City points residents to SSC for rates, so call (360) 734-3490 or email info@ssc-inc.com and ask for the current monthly rate at the cart size and collection frequency you choose. The City also adds a Solid Waste Utility tax to garbage collection and disposal, raised to 17.25 percent from February 2025, which the City describes as about two dollars and forty-three cents a month for an average household, and which does not apply to recycling or organics.

The local disposal guide
Bellingham contracts its residential collection to Sanitary Service Company, and the City's own pages say so. A household picks weekly, every-other-week or monthly garbage service in a 90-gallon or 60-gallon cart, with every-other-week recycling included, and single-stream recycling plus the FoodPlus! organic waste service are now standard for single-family homes. Anything too big for a cart goes out through the operator's curbside junk haul, which takes most junk including appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, remodeling debris and yard waste with no minimum charge but a quoted price. The operator refuses hazardous waste of every kind, so paint, chemicals, oil, gasoline and fluorescent lights go free to the Whatcom County Disposal of Toxics facility at 3505 Airport Drive. Televisions and computers are free through the state E-Cycle Washington program at a registered collector, and the drop box facility on Roeder Avenue takes a self-haul load of garbage, recycling and yard debris.

Exercise equipment is not named on the operator's item lists, so the machine has to be confirmed before it is set out.
The collection contractor refuses hazardous waste of every kind, and the free household route is the county's Disposal of Toxics facility.

The handoff matters
Bag and seal all garbage inside the container and keep the lid closed, because extra charges apply to overweight or overfull containers and to garbage piled on top of or beside one. Put the container at the curb with the handle facing the house and leave at least three feet of clear space on all sides, away from other containers, trees, shrubs, utility poles, mailboxes and parked vehicles. Containers go out the evening before the collection day so the truck is not missed in the morning.
Operator residential garbage page with the Bellingham cart sizes, collection frequencies, placement rules and drop box hoursOperator residential recycling page with the single-stream cart, the every-other-week schedule and the items set beside the cartThe operator's curbside junk haul takes most items too big for the cart, including appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, remodeling debris and yard waste, and it charges no minimum. The steps are to send the online request or call (360) 734-3490, approve the estimate the operator sends back, and set the items out at the scheduled time. A hot tub has to be fully drained of water and chemicals before it goes out, and the estimate is worth doing before anything leaves the house because the price depends on the load and the address.

Contact the operator, either through the online junk haul request or on (360) 734-3490, approve the estimate, then set the items out at the scheduled time. There is no minimum charge for the haul, and rates are quoted rather than published because they depend on the load and on the service address.Official guidance
Yes, when the piece is still usable. The City's own guide lists Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County and The RE Store for furniture, with in-person drop-off or scheduled pickup, and Goodwill and Value Village for furniture and appliances at in-person drop-off. Call ahead, because each organization's accepted items change.Official guidance
The operator will haul it with a curbside junk haul, quoted from the online request or the call to (360) 734-3490. A drop-off works too: the private operator publishes a higher per-item price for a refrigerator or freezer, and the drop box station charges the recycling rate plus the legally required environmental handling charge for any unit with a compressor.Official guidance
The state E-Cycle Washington program recycles televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players free of charge at registered collectors, and the City's own guide names a local collector in Ferndale that is registered for the program. Keyboards, printers, toner cartridges and cell phones are free at participating Best Buy and Staples stores, and anything outside the program can be looked up on the state hotline.Official guidance
The City of Bellingham contracts its residential collection to Sanitary Service Company, which the City names as the provider of garbage, recycling and organic waste service, and residents are told to contact SSC directly about their service on (360) 734-3490 or info@ssc-inc.com. The City's solid waste group handles litter, illegal dumping and waste on public property rather than household collection.Official guidance
The garbage service rate set by the operator, the monthly FoodPlus! organic charge for households that are new to the program, and the City's Solid Waste Utility tax on garbage collection and disposal. Recycling is included with the garbage service rather than charged on its own, and the tax does not apply to recycling or organics.Official guidance
The City raised the Solid Waste Utility tax from 11.5 percent to 17.25 percent starting in February 2025 to help fund cleanup of contaminated waterfront sites. The City says the increase adds about two dollars and forty-three cents a month for an average household, the tax applies only to garbage collection and disposal rather than recycling or organics, and the actual amount depends on the pickup frequency.Official guidance
The City describes the organic waste requirement and the collection changes as applying to single-family residential customers on lots with four units or less, and the operator says residential service is available to single-family residences and multi-family units up to four units. A household on a lot with two to four units may be able to combine collection with its neighbors to reduce the number of containers. A larger building should confirm its own arrangement with the operator.Official guidance
