Large appliances are on the Jefferson County household hazardous waste accepted list and can be dropped off at no cost on an event day, and the county lists retailer take-back, donation, scrap metal buyers and landfills as other options.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Jefferson County residents can drop off appliances at the household hazardous waste events at no cost. The county lists other routes that may pay for the metal or charge their own fee, and those prices are not published.

The 2026 county household hazardous waste events are April 25 at three sites and October 17 at Camp Bessemer, 3295 King Street, and Camp Ketona, 121 County Shop Road, 8 to 11:30 a.m.

No charge. Jefferson County residents can drop off household hazardous waste, electronics, and used cooking oil and grease for free at the county events. Tires are limited to eight without rims per visit.

Birmingham residents have three municipal ways to move a large load: the neighborhood bulk trash route, the four district dumpsters, and the public unloading area at the Eastern Area Landfill. Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Appliances are accepted at no cost on a county household hazardous waste event day, and the county also lists asking the delivering company to take the old unit, donating a working appliance, a scrap metal buyer such as SA Recycling at 1620 Vanderbilt Road, or a landfill that states it will take it.Official guidance
How do the city collection days work?+
