The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Tanque Verde sits in unincorporated Pima County, so there is no city collection department to call. Pima County tells households outside the Tucson city limits to either hire a permitted solid waste hauler for curbside pickup or self haul to a disposal facility. The regional landfill for both decisions is the Los Reales Sustainability Campus on the southeast side, which accepts mattresses, furniture, rugs, green waste and construction debris from Pima County residents, charges a per appliance fee for anything designed to use refrigerant, and refuses universal waste, waste oil and lead acid batteries. Electronics are the item with their own route: they are refused at the landfill and go through the City of Tucson household hazardous waste program at the same campus, which is free to Tucson residents but charges residents of unincorporated Pima County a per visit fee, or to one of the local electronics recyclers the city lists.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named on the accepted list at the regional Los Reales landfill, which serves Pima County residents, and at the county transfer station on North Oracle Road. There is no city pickup in unincorporated Tanque Verde, so the couch leaves either on the household's own hauler account or on a self haul load.

City cost & eligibility
From $18 for minimum charge for a covered self haul load under 2,000 pounds at the regional landfill, with heavier loads priced per ton and an environmental fee added to every load. Pima County residents self hauling to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus. A household that keeps a curbside hauler pays whatever that hauler charges, because collection outside the Tucson city limits is a private subscription.
When & how
Los Reales is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Sunday, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The courthouse transfer station on North Oracle Road is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get it ready
Cover the load, because an uncovered load is charged an extra fee, and keep furniture out of the recycling bins. At the North Oracle Road station the couch goes in with residential waste, while the Ryan Field station on the south side refuses furniture and carpet entirely.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are on the accepted list at the regional Los Reales landfill. No page publishes a per mattress price, because the landfill prices a covered load rather than an item and collection in the unincorporated area is a private subscription.

City cost & eligibility
From $18 for minimum charge for a covered self haul load under 2,000 pounds at the regional landfill, with heavier loads priced per ton and an environmental fee added to every load. Pima County residents self hauling to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus. A household with a curbside hauler pays that hauler's own bulky item price instead, which is not published by the county.
When & how
Los Reales takes deliveries Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sunday and on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Get it ready
Tie or wrap the unit so it stays together and cover the load for the drive, and keep the mattress out of the recycling bins at the campus. Ask the household's own hauler before a curbside set out, because the county does not set a mattress rule for addresses it does not collect.

Bulk items and household junk

Special rules apply

There is no county or city bulky collection in unincorporated Tanque Verde. Pima County's own instruction for an address outside the Tucson city limits is to hire a permitted solid waste hauler for curbside service or to self haul to a disposal facility.

City cost & eligibility
The self haul route publishes a minimum covered load charge at Los Reales and a per vehicle minimum at the county transfer station, while the curbside alternative is priced by whichever permitted hauler the household contracts with, and neither the county nor the city publishes that price. Confirm with the chosen hauler before a set out, or plan on the published gate minimum at a self haul site.
When & how
Curbside pickup runs on the hauler's own schedule, so it is set when the account is arranged. Self haul is available at Los Reales Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at the North Oracle Road transfer station Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep bulk junk off the curb until a hauler account covers it, and cover any self hauled load because an uncovered load costs more. Leave hazardous waste, liquids, waste oil, lead acid batteries, tires beyond the residential allowance and universal waste out of the load, because the landfill refuses them.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Los Reales charges a per appliance fee for anything designed to use refrigerant, in addition to the load fee, while the county transfer stations list household appliances as scrap metal, with refrigerators accepted without Freon at the North Oracle Road site and one Freon item per household per year at the Sahuarita site.

City cost & eligibility
From $20 per appliance designed to use refrigerant at the regional landfill, in addition to any other applicable load fee. Pima County residents self hauling to Los Reales. Household appliances such as washers, dryers and water heaters go through the scrap metal stream at the county transfer stations where residential fees apply, and a refrigerator at the North Oracle Road station has to be free of Freon.
When & how
Los Reales takes deliveries Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the North Oracle Road transfer station is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both close on the listed state holidays.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, and say up front whether it holds refrigerant, because the landfill prices refrigerant appliances separately and the transfer station has its own Freon rule. Keep the appliance out of the household recycling bins and off the curbside route unless the hauler account covers bulky appliances.

Construction and renovation debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction debris, concrete and asphalt are on the accepted list at Los Reales, and the county transfer station on North Oracle Road takes construction debris, concrete, dirt, rocks and bricks with residential waste. The Ryan Field station on the south side refuses all of it.

City cost & eligibility
From $26.25 for published residential vehicle rate at the county transfer station that accepts construction debris, for a load under one ton, with heavier tonnage priced separately and a minimum charge on the tonnage scale. Pima County residents hauling their own construction debris. The same load at Los Reales falls under the covered load and tonnage schedule instead, and county fees carry a special handling charge when a material needs review.
When & how
The county transfer station on North Oracle Road takes construction debris Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Los Reales takes it Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Cover the load and separate clean concrete, dirt, rocks and bricks from mixed debris, because the transfer station lists them as accepted residential waste while a material that needs review can carry a special handling charge. Take the load to a site that accepts construction debris, since the Ryan Field station refuses furniture, carpet, construction debris, dirt, rocks, concrete and bricks.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are refused at the landfill as universal waste and cannot go in the recycling bin. They go through the City of Tucson household hazardous waste program at the Los Reales campus or at a monthly community collection event, and the city also lists local recyclers as alternatives.

City cost & eligibility
The two program pages publish different fees for households outside the City of Tucson. The City of Tucson household hazardous waste page charges 15 dollars per visit for Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and unincorporated Pima County, and the Pima County waste page publishes a 10 dollar drop-off fee for residents living outside the City of Tucson limits, while City of Tucson residents drop free. Unincorporated Pima County households, which includes Tanque Verde, still need a driver's license or a current utility bill as proof of residency, so confirm the exact fee before travelling.
When & how
Drop off at the Los Reales campus on Thursday, Friday or Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the site is closed on the second Saturday of every month except during the summer. Community collection events also run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., with 2026 dates on September 12, October 10, November 14 and December 12.
Get it ready
Keep televisions, monitors, computers and printers out of the recycling bin and out of the landfill load, wipe personal data before handover, and bring the proof of residency that the program asks for. Accepted items include computers and laptops, monitors, printers and scanners, televisions, phones and tablets, keyboards, cables, chargers and small media players.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the landfill's accepted list or in the county transfer station lists, and it is too large for a bagged residential load, so the machine has to be confirmed before it leaves the property.

City cost & eligibility
No county or city page publishes a rate for an exercise machine. A self haul load is priced by weight or by vehicle at Los Reales and at the North Oracle Road transfer station, and a curbside pickup is priced by the household's own hauler, so confirm both the acceptance and the amount before moving the machine.
When & how
Ask the household's hauler during a normal business day, or call Los Reales at 520-791-4183 before a self haul trip. The landfill takes deliveries Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Break the machine down and keep the pieces together, take off any console or screen so it can go to the electronics program instead, and cover the load if the machine is going in a trailer or truck bed. Keep the machine off the curb until the hauler or the site confirms it.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

This address has no municipal collection, so arrange the route first

Tanque Verde is unincorporated Pima County and the county's own guidance for an address outside the Tucson city limits is to hire a permitted solid waste hauler for curbside garbage and recyclables or to self haul to a disposal facility. Nothing sits at the curb waiting for a city crew, and the county publishes no bulky collection day for this area.

Pima County waste and recycling page with the rule that addresses outside the Tucson city limits hire a permitted hauler or self haul, the household hazardous waste fee note and the free antifreeze, battery, oil and paint drop-off

Cover every self haul load and expect a gate minimum

At the regional landfill a covered load under 2,000 pounds pays the minimum charge, a heavier load is priced per ton, an uncovered load costs more again, and every load carries an added environmental fee. Payment is by card only and a deposit may be required, so arrive with the load covered and secured.

Los Reales Sustainability Campus page with the hours, covered load and tonnage rates, refrigerant appliance charge, the accepted landfill list and the refused universal waste, oil and battery lines

Keep universal waste, liquids and batteries out of the load

The landfill refuses regulated hazardous waste, universal waste, bulk liquids, lead acid batteries, waste oil, explosives, ammunition, intact vehicles and anything banned by federal, state or city rules. Electronics fall under that refusal, which is why a television or computer goes to the household hazardous waste program instead of the landfill gate.

Keep a permitted hauler for curbside service

A Tanque Verde household that wants a curbside pickup rather than driving every load to a facility.

Cost & conditions
Curbside service in unincorporated Pima County is a private subscription, so the hauler sets its own monthly rate and its own bulky item terms. Pima County publishes a list of haulers permitted by the county, and the county does not publish a price for those accounts.
Arrange it
Arrange the account directly with a hauler permitted by Pima County, and ask that hauler which bulky items it takes, how they have to be prepared and whether there is a set out limit.

The county does not collect in this area, so an unarranged item left at the curb is an illegal dump, and the county asks residents to use a permitted hauler and to keep the landfill receipt.

Self haul to the Los Reales regional landfill

A household with a mattress, furniture, a rug, green waste or a construction load that will fit in a pickup or trailer.

Cost & conditions
From $18 for minimum charge for a covered load under 2,000 pounds, with per ton pricing above that, an extra charge for an uncovered load, a per appliance fee for refrigerant appliances and an environmental fee on every load. City of Tucson and Pima County residents, including self haulers from unincorporated areas such as Tanque Verde. Payment is by card only and a deposit may be required.
Arrange it
Drive the covered load to 5300 E. Los Reales Road and check in at the scale. The campus is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The landfill refuses universal waste, hazardous waste, bulk liquids, waste oil and lead acid batteries, so electronics and chemicals have to be handled at the household hazardous waste program instead.

Use the household hazardous waste program for electronics

A household with a television, monitor, computer, printer or other electronic device that the landfill and the recycling bin both refuse.

Cost & conditions
$15 per visit fee for residents of unincorporated Pima County at the household hazardous waste program, while City of Tucson residents drop free. Unincorporated Pima County households, with a driver's license or current utility bill as proof of residency. The Pima County waste page prints a lower outside the city figure, so confirm the amount at the site.

Take electronics to a local recycler

A household that would rather use a community electronics recycler than drive to the Los Reales campus on a program day.

Cost & conditions
The city lists the organizations without publishing their rates. One of them, Keeper of the Grumper, states that many items including computers, televisions, phones and cables are accepted free of charge, and the others set their own terms, so confirm with the one you choose.
Arrange it
The City of Tucson electronics page lists Keeper of the Grumper, ACE Recycling and We Care Tucson, each with a link. Contact the organization first, since hours and acceptance lists are set by each group.

These are independent organizations rather than the county or city program, so nothing about the household hazardous waste fee, the drop-off window or the accepted device list carries over to them.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self hauling from Tanque Verde means one of two trips. Los Reales at 5300 E. Los Reales Road is the regional landfill for Pima County and takes mattresses, furniture, rugs, green waste, concrete and asphalt and construction debris from Monday through Saturday, six to five, charging a minimum for a covered load under 2,000 pounds, more for an uncovered load and a per appliance fee for anything designed to use refrigerant. The county transfer station at 14425 N. Oracle Road is the smaller stop, open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free recycling drop-off, free antifreeze, battery, oil and paint drop-off, free resident tires up to five a year and household appliances in the scrap metal stream, though its refrigerators have to arrive without Freon. Electronics cannot go to either site, because the landfill refuses universal waste and the recycling bins refuse them too, so a television or computer goes to the household hazardous waste drop-off on the Los Reales campus or to a community collection event, where unincorporated Pima County addresses pay the program's per visit fee. Where does a couch go in Tanque Verde?

Tanque Verde is unincorporated, so a couch goes out through the household's own hauler or on a self haul trip to Los Reales, which lists furniture as accepted waste from Pima County residents. Cover the load before the trip, because uncovered loads are charged more, and if the load is under 2,000 pounds it pays the minimum gate charge rather than the per ton rate.Official guidance

Will Los Reales take a mattress?

Yes. Mattresses are on the accepted landfill list at the Los Reales Sustainability Campus, which serves City of Tucson and Pima County residents and is open to residential self haulers. The site prices a covered load rather than one item, so a single mattress inside a covered load under 2,000 pounds pays the minimum gate charge plus the environmental fee.Official guidance

Who picks up bulky items in Tanque Verde?

A private hauler, because Tanque Verde is unincorporated Pima County and the county tells addresses outside the Tucson city limits to hire a permitted solid waste hauler or self haul to a disposal facility. The curbside price is the hauler's own, while a self haul load pays the published minimum gate charge at Los Reales or the per vehicle minimum at the North Oracle Road transfer station.Official guidance

What does it cost to drop a refrigerator?

At Los Reales a refrigerator or any other appliance designed to use refrigerant is charged per appliance on top of the other applicable load fees. The county transfer stations handle household appliances as scrap metal with residential fees, and the North Oracle Road station accepts a refrigerator only when it is free of Freon, so confirm the site and the rule before loading.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Tanque Verde?

Through the City of Tucson household hazardous waste program, which accepts computers, monitors, printers, televisions, phones, cables and small media players. Electronics are refused at the landfill as universal waste and must never go in the recycling bin. Residents of unincorporated Pima County pay the program's per visit fee and should bring a driver's license or current utility bill.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Tanque Verde?

No city or county crew does, because Tanque Verde is unincorporated Pima County. Pima County tells households outside the Tucson city limits to hire a permitted solid waste hauler for curbside garbage and recyclables or to self haul to a disposal facility, and the county's own waste page links the list of haulers it permits.Official guidance

What does a self haul trip cost?

At Los Reales a covered load under 2,000 pounds pays the minimum charge, a heavier load is priced per ton, an uncovered load costs more, every load carries an added environmental fee, and an appliance designed to use refrigerant carries its own per appliance charge. At the county transfer station on North Oracle Road a residential vehicle under one ton pays the published per vehicle rate instead.Official guidance

What does electronics drop-off cost for a county address?

Residents of unincorporated Pima County pay a per visit fee at the City of Tucson household hazardous waste program, while City of Tucson residents drop free. The program's own pages print the fee for out of city addresses and Pima County's waste page prints a lower figure, so confirm the amount with proof of residency in hand before the trip.Official guidance

What can Pima County residents drop off for free?

Free recycling drop-off is available at the county transfer stations and at the Los Reales neighborhood recycling center, and antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint are free at the transfer stations up to five gallons a month. Residents also get five tires a year free at the transfer stations, with no off-road tires accepted.Official guidance

What will the landfill refuse at the gate?

Los Reales refuses explosives and ammunition, regulated hazardous waste, PCBs, universal waste, radioactive material, bulk liquids, raw septage, intact automobiles, lead acid batteries, waste oil and anything banned by federal, state or city rules. That refusal list is why electronics go to the household hazardous waste program instead of the landfill.Official guidance

Do all county transfer stations take the same things?

No. The North Oracle Road station takes furniture, carpet, construction debris, concrete, dirt, rocks and bricks along with bagged household waste, while the Ryan Field station on the south side refuses all of those and refuses refrigerators and any item containing Freon. The Sahuarita station takes the construction and furniture material but limits a household to one Freon item a year.Official guidance
