A mattress is not named on the city's bulky waste list, and the large recyclables drop-off refuses mattresses outright and points residents to California's mattress recycling program instead. The item therefore has to be confirmed with the hauler rather than assumed to be part of a pickup.
City cost & eligibility
The city names mattresses nowhere except as a refusal at its drop-off center, which links the state mattress program, and the bulky pickup list does not mention them, so confirm with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 whether a mattress can be included in one of the three free pickups or has to go to the state program.
When & how
Call Republic Services before the appointment day, and if the unit cannot go out with the pickup, use the state mattress program the city links rather than leaving it at the curb.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and off the curb until the route is confirmed, and keep it out of the carts, because the bulky and drop-off lists both exclude it.
The large recyclables drop-off refuses business and contractor waste, stumps wider than a foot, treated wood such as railroad ties, telephone poles, fence posts and decking, furniture of any kind, pallets, plastics, garden supplies and hoses, sod, ceramic tile, items with cloth or fabric, carpet, mattresses, expanded polystyrene and glass or mirrors. The door-to-door hazardous waste pickup refuses household garbage and recyclables, computers, televisions and other electronics, asbestos, ammunition and explosives, radioactive material, compressed gas cylinders and containers larger than five gallons.

California law requires a retailer that delivers a new mattress to offer to take back the old mattress at no additional cost, although delivery or setup fees for the new product can still apply, the retailer has up to 30 days to collect it, and it may refuse a mattress that poses a health or safety risk.
Arrange it
Ask the retailer to include the old mattress in the delivery when the new one is ordered, and keep the unit clean and dry until it is collected.
