Couch & furniture removal in Elk GroveCity collection Furniture is named on the city's bulky waste list, so a couch or a sofa leaves on one of the three free pickups a household may book each calendar year. Each pickup covers a pile of up to five cubic yards and has to be scheduled in advance for the regular trash day, and the city's drop-off center refuses furniture, so the curbside pickup is the city route. No charge. Free to Elk Grove residents three times a calendar year as part of the residential service, with a pile of up to five cubic yards per appointment, and the pickup booked in advance with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500.

Mattress & bed removal in Elk GroveCity collection A mattress is not named on the city's bulky waste list, and the large recyclables drop-off refuses mattresses outright and points residents to California's mattress recycling program instead. The item therefore has to be confirmed with the hauler rather than assumed to be part of a pickup. The city names mattresses nowhere except as a refusal at its drop-off center, which links the state mattress program, and the bulky pickup list does not mention them, so confirm with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 whether a mattress can be included in one of the three free pickups or has to go to the state program.

The local disposal guide
Elk Grove runs its residential program through Republic Services, and the bulky waste pickup is the city route for anything too large for a cart. A household may book three free bulky pickups each calendar year, each covering a pile of up to five cubic yards, booked in advance for the regular trash day, and the acceptable list names appliances, furniture, pruning and tree branches, PVC pipe within the size limits, and televisions and computer monitors that have to be flagged when the appointment is made. Mattresses are not named there, and the city's own drop-off center refuses them while pointing to the state mattress program. The Special Waste Collection Center on Disposal Lane carries the rest: household hazardous waste is free to residents, and one truck-size load a month of hard-to-recycle material can be dropped as well, from scrap metal and exercise equipment to appliances without Freon, small amounts of inert material and e-waste.

Televisions and computer monitors are named on the city's bulky waste list, with the requirement that the resident flags them when booking the pickup, and the residential service also includes a curbside e-waste pickup by appointment through Republic Services. The Special Waste Collection Center takes e-waste as well, and an appliance with a circuit board counts as e-waste rather than an appliance.
Lumber can go out with the bulky pickup only within the city's size limits, no wider than four inches and no longer than five feet, with fencing disassembled, and dirt, rocks, bricks and tree stumps are refused outright. The drop-off center takes only small amounts of inert material such as concrete without rebar, rubble, brick, rock, soil, gravel and dirt, and refuses drywall, toilets, terracotta pots, porcelain and treated wood. Clean concrete in larger amounts has its own commercial receiver, and covered projects carry the CalGreen diversion requirement.
Exercise equipment is named in the metal category at the city's large recyclables drop-off, which accepts items made predominantly of metal, so a machine with a metal frame has a published free route. The curbside bulky waste list does not name exercise equipment, so a curbside pickup still has to be confirmed with the hauler.

Elk Grove residents drop household hazardous waste free at the Special Waste Collection Center on Disposal Lane, and the city's accepted list covers the yard, the home, the garage and universal waste: pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, propane cylinders of five gallons or less, cleaners, aerosols, medicines, sharps in rigid containers, antifreeze, auto and motorcycle batteries, gasoline and diesel, kerosene, motor oil, transmission fluid, oil based and latex paint, thinner, varnish and wood preservative.
The handoff matters
The pile goes in front of the residence on the same side of the street, no more than 24 hours before the appointment, because the city warns that setting material out sooner can bring a citation for illegal dumping and that this includes material strangers add to the pile. The maximum is 7 by 6 by 4 feet, or five cubic yards, and a resident who expects more should say so when booking so the extra can be priced instead of left behind.

The recycling area and reuse room allow ten items a month for each household.

Book one of the three free bulky waste pickups a household may use each calendar year. Furniture is on the city's acceptable list, each appointment covers a pile of up to five cubic yards, and the pickup is scheduled with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 for the regular trash day. The city's drop-off center refuses furniture, so the pickup is the route.Official guidance
The city's bulky waste list does not name mattresses, and the Special Waste Collection Center refuses them while linking California's mattress recycling program, so confirm the unit with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 before it goes out. If the pickup will not take it, the state program the city links is the published alternative.Official guidance
In California a retailer that delivers a new mattress has to offer to take the old one back at no additional cost, the retailer has up to 30 days to collect it, and it may refuse a mattress that poses a health or safety risk. Delivery or setup fees for the new product can still apply, so ask when the delivery is arranged.Official guidance
Start with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500, because the bulky pickup list names appliances but the Special Waste Collection Center refuses anything containing Freon. A washer, dryer, stove or water heater can go out on one of the three free bulky pickups or to the drop-off center with the monthly load, while a refrigerator or freezer has to have its route confirmed first.Official guidance
There are three published routes. A curbside e-waste pickup by appointment with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 is part of the residential service, a television or computer monitor can ride one of the three free bulky pickups when it is flagged at booking, and the Special Waste Collection Center takes e-waste within the monthly drop-off allowance.Official guidance
Three a calendar year at no charge, each covering a pile of up to five cubic yards, which is about a pickup bed filled to the top of the cab. The pickup is booked with Republic Services at (916) 635-2500 for the regular trash day, the pile cannot go out more than 24 hours early, and a pile above the limit is collected only to five cubic yards with a notice left on the rest.Official guidance
Republic Services hauls residential waste for the city under an exclusive franchise, and it handles the curbside carts, the bulky pickups, the e-waste and sharps appointments and the used oil collection at (916) 635-2500. The city runs the Special Waste Collection Center on Disposal Lane and answers questions through its recycling and waste division.Official guidance
Weekly trash and organics collection, recycling every other week, up to three recycle and organics carts, curbside pickup of used motor oil, oil filters and batteries, e-waste and sharps pickups by appointment, three bulky item pickups a year of up to five cubic yards, one trip to the Elder Creek Transfer Station a year, holiday tree collection from December 26 through January, free household hazardous waste drop-offs at the Special Waste Collection Center and free compost twice a year.Official guidance
Yes, as part of the residential service: household batteries and used motor oil and oil filters are collected at the curb on recycling day, and the city also takes used oil filter exchange events and universal waste at the Special Waste Collection Center. Batteries are still refused in a bulky waste pile, so they go with the recycling collection rather than the junk pile.Official guidance
No. The large recyclables drop-off is for Elk Grove residents only, business and contractor waste is refused, and material has to arrive in a privately owned vehicle with no business markings. A contractor working at an Elk Grove home has to arrange its own disposal, and the city's construction and demolition page sets out the CalGreen diversion requirement that applies to projects.Official guidance
Holiday trees are collected from December 26 through the month of January on the organics collection day, and the pickup is included in the residential rate. The city's residential services page lists it with the rest of the curbside program, so a resident just sets the tree out with the green cart on the usual day.Official guidance
It is part of the Special Waste Collection Center, where residents may pick up usable products that were dropped off, and the city allows ten items a month for each household. Access to the recycling area and the reuse room comes with the residential solid waste service.Official guidance
