Get it ready
Empty the appliance, keep the doors secure and keep the unit under the programme's six foot and 200 pound item limits. A unit that is too large for the curbside collection goes to San Martin, where appliances are accepted for a fee and the load should be arranged so it can be unloaded safely.
Each free bulky collection is bags or items, never a mix
Book the collection at 408.842.3358 and choose one option. Option one is up to twelve 32-gallon bags of garbage, all bagged, boxed or bundled with nothing loose, which is about two cubic yards or a pile three feet by six feet by three feet. Option two is two items such as appliances, furniture or electronic waste, with a mattress and box spring set counting as one item, and each item has to be under six feet long, under 200 pounds and manageable by one person.
Curbside by 6 a.m. and cancel a day ahead or lose the pickup
Bulky items have to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, and a household that is not out before the truck arrives forfeits that free collection. A cancellation has to reach customer service at least one business day before the appointment, unused collections do not roll over into the next calendar year, the account must be current rather than past due, and the programme covers residential customers inside the city of Gilroy, with multi-family properties arranging collections through the owner or manager.
Alkaline batteries ride the recycling cart, everything else does not
Alkaline household batteries can be sealed in a zip-top bag and left on top of or beside the recycling cart at the curb. Every other battery, along with fluorescent tubes, mercury thermostats and thermometers, and the electronics that California law bars from the trash, goes to the Santa Clara County household hazardous waste programme instead, which is appointment-only and free for city residents at 408-299-7300.
The county hazardous waste programme has its own limits
