Book the unwanted bags and boxes left after packing. Choose an available pickup day before you hand back the keys, and arrange to have them outside.

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Hayward runs a bulky program under its garbage rate schedule, published as an allotment of two cubic yards two times a year, and the city guide also prints the item-level list under that program: two cubic yards of garbage (about 16 large bags), three pieces of household furniture including carpet, three large appliances, two mattresses, three scrap metal items, two e-waste items and four passenger car tires, all with no fee.
The handoff matters
Place the cart on the street with the wheels against the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day and bring it in the same day. Keep it at least three feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other obstacles, keep carts at least two feet apart from each other, and store them on private property and out of view from the street no later than midnight on collection day under the municipal code. Bag all trash and close the lid, because overflow can draw an extra charge or be left behind.
