The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Indio runs its collection through one franchised hauler, Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services, with weekly garbage and recyclables on the designated service day. Bulky items and electronic waste come off the curb for free with no limit on how often a household asks, as long as the request reaches Burrtec at least five days before the collection day and no more than four items go out in a week. Sofas, chairs and refrigerators are the published bulky examples, computer screens and printers ride the electronic route, and paint, batteries, oil, filters and antifreeze go to the ABOP centre the city runs with Coachella.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Indio's bulky item programme is free and unlimited, but the published examples name sofas, chairs and refrigerators rather than a mattress.

City cost & eligibility
The bulky item pickup is published as free with no separate mattress price, but a mattress is not named in the city's examples. Confirm the item and the collection day with Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 before it goes out.
When & how
Call Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 at least five days before your regular garbage collection day, and set the mattress out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the trash and recycling carts and inside the four item weekly maximum. Hazardous materials such as oil based paint, car batteries and pesticides never ride this route, so separate those before the pickup.
Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Old sofas and chairs are the published bulky item examples, and the pickup is free with unlimited requests.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Indio residential customers on the Burrtec franchise, with unlimited free bulky item requests and a maximum of four items collected each week.
When & how
Contact Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 at least five days before your regular garbage collection day, and set the furniture out no more than 24 hours before the pickup.
Get it ready
Keep the load to four items for the week and off the curbside longer than the 24 hour rule allows, and keep hazardous material such as oil based paint, car batteries and pesticides out of it.
Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators are named in the bulky examples, and the city also lists refrigerators and air conditioning units on its hazardous materials call line for proper handling.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Indio residential customers on the Burrtec franchise, with unlimited free bulky item requests and a maximum of four items collected each week.
When & how
Book the appliance with Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 at least five days before the collection day, and confirm the refrigerant handling at the same time.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit and secure the doors. Because the city lists refrigerators and air conditioning units among the hazardous materials that cannot go in the curbside containers and gives (760) 391-4129 for proper disposal, ask Burrtec how the sealed unit should be prepared before it goes to the curb.
Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

Televisions, computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is free through the residential pickup programme at up to four items a week, and the Desert Arc events add a free drop-off open to the whole Coachella Valley.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Indio residents for the weekly electronic waste pickup, up to four electronic items a week, and anyone in the Coachella Valley for the free Desert Arc collection events.
When & how
Call Burrtec at 760-340-2113 to schedule the electronic waste pickup before anything goes to the curb, and use your regular trash day. The Desert Arc events are the free drop-off alternative, with questions at 760-346-1611.
Get it ready
Wipe or reset anything that stores data, and keep electronics out of the regular trash, because it is illegal to put hazardous electronics such as cathode ray tube televisions and monitors, LCD monitors, LCD televisions, plasma televisions and laptops with LCD displays into the trash. The busiest route takes up to four items a week.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Indio publishes no city collection or drop-off route for renovation material, and its diversion mandate names construction sites as a stream the city has to keep out of the landfill.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no construction rate because its own service does not take the material. A private container company or receiving facility sets its own acceptance and price, so confirm both before the load leaves the site.
When & how
Arrange a private container or a receiving facility before the project starts, and keep the material out of the curbside containers and out of a bulky item request.
Get it ready
Separate recyclable and reusable material before the load leaves the site, because the city's AB 939 diversion mandate names construction sites alongside commercial and residential streams, and route paint, thinners and other chemicals to the household hazardous waste options instead of the debris pile.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere on the Indio pages, so the hauler has to confirm the machine before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No published rate covers an exercise machine. If it is accepted it fits inside the free bulky item allowance, so confirm the item and any charge with Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 before the collection day.
When & how
Call Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 at least five days before your collection day with the machine type and weight, and book it only if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Break the machine down where you can and keep the pieces together, keep the machine to one of the four weekly items, and remove any console or battery pack so the electronics can be handled on the electronic waste route instead.
Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

Mixed bulky loads

Accepted with preparation

Indio provides unlimited free bulky item pickups for residential customers, capped at four items a week, arranged with the franchised hauler.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Indio residential customers on the Burrtec franchise, with unlimited free bulky item requests and a maximum of four items collected each week.
When & how
Contact Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 at least five days before the regular garbage collection day, and do not set the load out more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.
Get it ready
Keep the pile clear of the curb for longer than 24 hours, because the city ordinance does not allow garbage or containers at the curbside beyond that, and keep hazardous materials such as oil based paint, car batteries, refrigerators, air conditioning units and pesticides out of the bulky and curbside streams.
Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Nothing sits at the curb longer than a day

The city ordinance does not allow garbage or garbage containers to be left at the curbside for more than 24 hours, and the same 24 hour rule applies to a bulky item or electronic waste set-out before its scheduled pickup. Keeping the curb clear also discourages illegal dumping.

Solid waste page with the Burrtec franchise, the weekly collection, the free and unlimited bulky item and electronic waste programme, the five day booking and four item weekly limits, the hazardous materials call line and the ordinance highlights

Book five days ahead and keep to four items a week

Bulky item and electronic waste pickups are free and unlimited in number, but each request has to reach Burrtec at least five days before the regular garbage collection day, the material goes out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup, and Burrtec collects a maximum of four items a week.

One franchised hauler runs the collection

Indio's ordinance requires the franchised hauler to provide garbage collection, and that hauler is Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services. Residential garbage and recyclables are collected weekly on the designated service day, commercial customers may schedule more than one service a week, and service problems go to Burrtec at (760) 340-2113 while city programme questions go to the Environmental Programs Coordinator at (760) 625-1815.

Hazardous material never goes in the trash or recycling

Oil based paint, car batteries, refrigerators, air conditioning units, televisions, computer monitors, pesticides and similar items cannot go in the curbside trash or recycling containers. The city gives (760) 391-4129 for proper disposal and points at the Coachella and Indio Waste Transfer Station on Landfill Road, where the ABOP centre takes antifreeze, batteries, oil, filters and paint only. The county's permanent facility on Vella Road in Palm Springs takes all household hazardous waste types.
