Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit and secure the doors. Because the city lists refrigerators and air conditioning units among the hazardous materials that cannot go in the curbside containers and gives (760) 391-4129 for proper disposal, ask Burrtec how the sealed unit should be prepared before it goes to the curb.
The city ordinance does not allow garbage or garbage containers to be left at the curbside for more than 24 hours, and the same 24 hour rule applies to a bulky item or electronic waste set-out before its scheduled pickup. Keeping the curb clear also discourages illegal dumping.
Book five days ahead and keep to four items a week
Bulky item and electronic waste pickups are free and unlimited in number, but each request has to reach Burrtec at least five days before the regular garbage collection day, the material goes out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup, and Burrtec collects a maximum of four items a week.
Hazardous material never goes in the trash or recycling
Oil based paint, car batteries, refrigerators, air conditioning units, televisions, computer monitors, pesticides and similar items cannot go in the curbside trash or recycling containers. The city gives (760) 391-4129 for proper disposal and points at the Coachella and Indio Waste Transfer Station on Landfill Road, where the ABOP centre takes antifreeze, batteries, oil, filters and paint only. The county's permanent facility on Vella Road in Palm Springs takes all household hazardous waste types.

Antifreeze, batteries, oil, filters and paint go to the ABOP drop-off centre at 87-011 Landfill Road in Coachella, open 8 to 5 Monday through Friday and 8 to noon on Saturday, which the city runs with the City of Coachella and which takes those five materials only.
