Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named in the city bulky waste description, so a refrigerator, washer or dryer goes out on the free curbside collection rather than to a household hazardous waste event.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the free bulky item collection on the regular trash day, within the five item allowance and the three collections a year.
When & how
Schedule the pickup with Waste Management at 949-642-1191 or wmservice@wm.com at least 48 hours before the trash day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and remove or secure the doors before it goes to the curb. Do not take an appliance larger than a microwave to a household hazardous waste event, because the city refuses appliances larger than microwaves there.

Right item.
Right place.

Three carts, three streams

Every Mission Viejo household runs a black-lid landfill cart, a blue-lid mixed recyclables cart and a green-lid organics cart, in 35, 64 or 96 gallons. Recycling takes paper, metal, glass and plastics; organics takes food scraps, yard trimmings and non-hazardous wood waste; and the landfill cart takes what is neither, such as polystyrene foam, plastic film, plastic utensils, soiled or wax-coated cups, pet waste, diapers and garden hoses. Recycling and organics carts carry no extra charge, while an additional trash cart does.

Five large items, three times a year, on the trash day

Bulky collection happens on the regular trash collection day and costs nothing, with up to five large items allowed three times a year. Furniture, appliances, electronic equipment and similar items qualify, while car bodies and construction and demolition waste do not. The pickup has to be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance through Waste Management.

Household hazardous waste limits and refusals

A household can bring 125 pounds or 15 gallons of household hazardous waste per vehicle to a city collection event, with each container no larger than five gallons. Events take paint products and thinners, antifreeze, pool chemicals, household cleaners, fire extinguishers, used motor oil and filters, thermometers, smoke detectors, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and electronic waste. Sharps, ammunition, appliances larger than microwaves, asbestos, construction materials, leaking containers, pressurized cylinders, tires, trash, explosives, radioactive waste, biomedical waste and unknowns are refused, and batteries and sharps run through their own programmes.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Mission Viejo keeps bulky items on the curb and sends hazardous material to a gate. Furniture, appliances, electronic equipment and similar large items go out free on the regular trash collection day, up to five items and three times a year, booked with Waste Management at 949-642-1191 at least 48 hours ahead. Household hazardous waste goes to one of the two city collection events each year or to any of the four Orange County centers, free to county residents, with the nearest at 32250 Avenida La Pata in San Juan Capistrano and 6411 Oak Canyon in Irvine, both open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and limited to 125 pounds or 15 gallons per vehicle. Batteries drop off in the lobbies at City Hall, the Norman P. Murray center, the library and three recreation facilities. Construction and demolition material is refused at the curb, so it goes to the Prima Deshecha Landfill in San Juan Capistrano, which takes public as well as commercial waste from Orange County residents, or into a private container. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Mission Viejo.

How much does appliance removal cost in Mission Viejo?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Mission Viejo?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Where does a refrigerator or washer go in Mission Viejo?

Onto the free bulky item collection, because appliances are one of the categories the city names for bulky waste. Up to five large items go out on the regular trash day, three times a year, scheduled at least 48 hours ahead with Waste Management at 949-642-1191. Household hazardous waste events do not take appliances larger than a microwave.Official guidance
