The local disposal guide
Napa splits its large item routes three ways. A couch, a wood dresser, a carpet roll, a toilet or a pallet leaves on a bulky item pickup that the City of Napa rate table prices per service for up to four non-metal items, scheduled ahead with Napa Recycling at 707-255-5200. Metal is different: large appliances, large metal items over 36 inches, electronic waste, batteries, bulbs, bagged clothing and cooking oil come off the curb free through the Recycle More program, and a refrigerator, freezer, washer or dryer has to have its door removed or its latch disabled first. Mattresses and box springs drop free at the Devlin Road Recycling and Transfer Facility, which also takes furniture, appliances, carpet, concrete, dirt, mixed construction material and tires at the gate and publishes its own price sheet. Household chemicals, sharps, batteries and bulbs go to the Napa-Vallejo Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 889A Devlin Road on Fridays and Saturdays, free for households and limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.

A refrigerator, freezer, washer or dryer has to have its door removed or its latch or locking mechanism disabled before pickup so a child cannot be trapped inside.
Electronic waste comes off the curb free through the Recycle More program, which takes cathode ray tube and flat screen televisions, computer monitors, computers and accessories, consumer electronics and electronic toys. Scrap metal and electronics also drop free at the Napa Recycling and Composting Facility, and the household hazardous waste facility refuses them.
A project in Napa has its own routes. Separated clean yard waste, wood, drywall, metal and electronics go to the Napa Recycling and Composting Facility, while concrete and asphalt, dirt and mixed construction and demolition waste go to the Devlin Road Transfer Station, which runs mixed material sorting and diversion reporting for LEED projects. The state and the City of Napa require large projects to reuse or recycle at least 65 percent of the debris generated.
Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky item list, and Recycle More takes large metal items over 36 inches, so a machine with a metal frame may qualify for the free pickup while a wooden or plastic machine may not. The route has to be confirmed with the hauler before the machine goes out.
Household chemicals never go in a cart. The Napa-Vallejo Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 889A Devlin Road takes paint, stains, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, gasoline, used oil and filters, propane tanks, treated wood, sharps, medication, bulbs, batteries and mercury items free from households, and it keeps a Reuse Locker where usable leftovers go back out for other residents.
The handoff matters
Napa runs two curbside routes for large items. Metal goes free through Recycle More, which takes large appliances, large metal items over 36 inches, electronic waste, bagged clothing and shoes, and cooking oil, and a refrigerator, freezer, washer or dryer has to have its door removed or its latch disabled before pickup. Everything else large and non-metal goes on the bulky item service, which covers up to four items at a rate per service and takes furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpet and padding rolled no longer than six feet and no wider than 18 inches, pallets, plastic furniture, toilets, tires and untreated wood.
