The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Pasadena collects refuse from its own residential properties, and bulky items are arranged rather than left out. A household served by the city may schedule two free bulky item pickups a year by calling 626-744-7311, with the load limited to what would fill a three cubic yard bin and to items two people can lift. The pile goes on the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, no more than 24 hours before the scheduled day, and the resident has to list the items when booking. Electronics, renovation material, household chemicals, landscaping project debris, refrigerators and air conditioning units are not part of that service. Household chemicals and electronic waste go free to the Los Angeles S.A.F.E. centers or a county one-day event, electronic waste also has the city's own one-day events at the Rose Bowl, and a renovation load runs under the city construction and demolition ordinance with its Green Halo reporting and refundable deposit.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Pasadena refuse customers can schedule two free bulky item pickups a year by calling 626-744-7311, and the load is limited to what would fill a three cubic yard bin and to items two people can safely lift.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Two free bulky item pickups a year for households with City of Pasadena refuse service. Extra items beyond the service order and any pickup beyond the two free ones in a calendar year are charged.
When & how
Call 626-744-7311 and schedule at least two weeks before the regular trash pickup day, then set the load out on the scheduled day between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a weekday. Bulky pickups are not scheduled on holidays.
Get it ready
Place everything on the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, no more than 24 hours before the scheduled day and by 7 a.m. that morning, because Code Enforcement can issue a citation for early set-out and city staff cannot move items off private property. Keep the pile within a three cubic yard bin, about four feet wide, five feet long and four feet high, and to items two people can lift safely.

Appliances other than refrigerators and air conditioners

Accepted with preparation

Household appliances are not on the city's refused bulky list, with refrigerators and air conditioning units the two appliance categories named as not picked up, so a washer, dryer or stove can go out with the free pickup.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the two free bulky item pickups a year for City of Pasadena refuse customers, inside the three cubic yard allowance.
When & how
Schedule through 626-744-7311 at least two weeks before the regular trash day, list the appliance on the service order, and set it out for the scheduled weekday.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep it within what two people can lift. Do not put a refrigerator or an air conditioning unit out with the bulky pile, because those are named as not picked up and need their own route.
City residential refuse service and recycling page with the bulky item procedure, the two free pickups, the parkway and timing rules, the three cubic yard allowance, the refused list and the holiday schedule

Refrigerators and air conditioning units

Special rules apply

Refrigerators and air conditioning units are named as not picked up in Pasadena bulky collection, and white goods are also refused at the city one-day e-waste events, so a cooling appliance needs a private or retailer route.

City cost & eligibility
No published Pasadena route or rate covers a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioning unit, because the bulky service, the e-waste events and the household hazardous waste programme all exclude them. Confirm a retailer take-back or a private hauler and its price before the unit leaves the property.
When & how
Arrange a retailer take-back or a private hauler rather than booking a bulky pickup, and confirm the charge and the collection day before the unit goes outside.
Get it ready
Keep the unit out of every cart and off the parkway, empty it first, and take the doors off so it cannot be entered. Do not take it to a city e-waste event, where white goods are refused.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is refused in bulky collection, and Pasadena instead runs one-day e-waste and shredding events through the year, while Los Angeles residents can also use the free S.A.F.E. collection centers.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city one-day e-waste events are free to residents, and the Los Angeles S.A.F.E. centers are free for household hazardous waste and electronic waste, capped at 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.
When & how
Check the city calendar for the next one-day e-waste and document shredding event, which is scheduled around space availability at the Rose Bowl, or drive to a S.A.F.E. collection center, and subscribe through the City Service Center for event notices.
Get it ready
Erase sensitive data before recycling any device, remove fluorescent bulbs from lamps and metal housings, and leave white goods, air conditioners, water heaters, car batteries, solar panels and large printer or copier units at home, because the events refuse them. Keep electronics out of the bulky pile and the carts.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Construction and roofing material is refused in bulky collection, and covered Pasadena projects have to divert at least 75 percent of their waste through the city ordinance, tracked in Green Halo with a refundable deposit.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes the deposit formula for covered projects but no tipping rate, so confirm the authorised hauler or disposal price through the City Service Center on 626-744-7311, and note that the deposit is refundable only when the Green Halo compliance report is approved and the refund form is submitted.
When & how
Use an authorised franchise hauler, because the city's rented bins refuse construction material, and for a covered project file the waste management plan in Green Halo before the permit is issued and submit weight tickets before the final inspection.
Get it ready
Keep concrete, cement, bricks, roof shingles, tiles and drywall out of the bulky pile, because the city refuses construction and roofing material there. Separate the material by type for the diversion report, and manage universal waste such as mercury thermostats, batteries, fluorescent tubes and ballasts through the documented route on commercial projects and tenant improvements over 1,000 square feet.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named as accepted or refused in Pasadena, and the bulky service is defined by its refused list, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed against the bin and lift limits.

City cost & eligibility
A machine inside the three cubic yard allowance that two people can lift would use one of the two free pickups a year, so confirm the item with the City Service Center on 626-744-7311 when the pickup is scheduled and the item list is filed.
When & how
Call 626-744-7311 before booking and confirm the machine, then schedule the pickup at least two weeks ahead if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Describe the machine and its weight when you call, keep it within what two people can safely lift and inside a three cubic yard pile, and remove any console or battery pack so the electronics can go to an e-waste event instead.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

The parkway is the collection point

Bulky items go on the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, in front of the house, and the resident has to put them there because city staff cannot enter private property. Nothing goes out before the pickup is scheduled, everything is out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled day and by 7 a.m. that morning, and early set-out can draw a citation from Code Enforcement. The pile may fill no more than a three cubic yard bin, about four feet wide, five feet long and four feet high, and each item has to be light enough for two people to lift safely.

What the bulky truck will not take

Electronic waste such as televisions, DVD players, cellphones, gaming consoles, computers and monitors is refused, along with construction and roofing material such as concrete, cement, bricks, roof shingles, tiles and drywall, household hazardous materials such as paint, batteries, fertilizer, oil and cleaning supplies, landscaping project material such as dirt, sand, gravel, large branches and stumps, bushes and railroad ties, and automobile parts except up to two tires without rims. Refrigerators and air conditioning units are refused as well. Wood, pipe and branches must be no longer than three feet and tied into easy to handle bundles, and glass and mirrors should stay visible to the crew.

Household chemicals leave through the county network

Household hazardous waste cannot go in the garbage, down a storm drain or onto the ground. Los Angeles County residents can take paint, solvents, cleaning products, used motor oil and filters, antifreeze and other automotive fluids, pool and garden chemicals, aerosol cans, fluorescent bulbs and sharps to a free S.A.F.E. collection center or a county one-day event, with a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Pasadena also takes household batteries and light bulbs at selected libraries and community centers, PaintCare retailers take leftover paint, and city refuse customers can have used oil and filters picked up curbside by appointment.

Rent a city bin for a large cleanout

A household with a one-time cleanout of ordinary household refuse that is too large for the bulky allowance and does not fit the refuse carts.

Cost & conditions
From $92.91 per load for a one week rental, with the city dumpster answer printing 92 dollars and 91 cents per load, the temporary bin answer printing 92 dollars and 95 cents, and an additional temporary bin pickup priced separately at 164 dollars and 85 cents. City of Pasadena refuse customers, with the published rates valid from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
Arrange it
Call the City Service Center on 626-744-7311 to schedule a three cubic yard bin or temporary bin service at least one week in advance, and confirm what may go in it.

The bin cannot take construction materials, electronic waste or household hazardous waste, so those loads go to an authorised franchise hauler or through the Green Halo process, and anything else the refuse programme refuses leaves by its own route.

Arrange a private route for refused items

A household with a refrigerator, air conditioner or other item the city refuses, or a covered renovation with a construction load that needs an authorised hauler.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no rate for a private pickup or a construction haul, and the covered project deposit is separate from the hauling price, so confirm the charge with the retailer, the hauler or the city before the load moves.
Arrange it
Arrange a retailer take-back or a private hauler for the appliance, and for a covered renovation follow the Green Halo process described by the city, including the waste management plan before the permit and the weight tickets before the final inspection.

Covered projects must divert at least 75 percent of waste and the deposit is refundable only after the compliance report is approved and the refund form is submitted. Hazardous material still has to go to the S.A.F.E. route rather than into a haul.

Pasadena keeps bulky items on the parkway and sends chemicals and electronics off site. A city refuse customer schedules two free bulky pickups a year on 626-744-7311, at least two weeks ahead, with the pile on the parkway between the sidewalk and the street, within a three cubic yard bin and light enough for two people. Anything the city refuses has its own route. Household hazardous waste goes free to a Los Angeles S.A.F.E. collection center or a county one-day event, with a 15 gallon or 125 pound per visit limit and the origin address requested at drop-off. Electronic waste also has the city one-day events at the Rose Bowl, and batteries and light bulbs drop off at selected Pasadena libraries and community centers. Renovation material runs through the city construction and demolition ordinance and a rented bin or authorised hauler rather than the curb. Refrigerators and air conditioning units are refused by the bulky service and by the e-waste events, so those need a retailer take-back or a private hauler.
