No charge. Included in the up to three free bulky item pickups a year for a residential home, with furniture such as chairs, sofas and dining tables, untreated wood including untreated lumber and disassembled fencing, carpets, plastic pipes up to six feet and toys all on the acceptable list.
When & how
Schedule the pickup with Atlas Disposal before anything goes out, then put the pieces out by 6 a.m. on the collection day and no sooner than 24 hours before.
Get it ready
Keep the pile inside the 10 cubic yard limit, bag leaves and grass clippings, keep the pile six feet from vehicles and three feet from carts, and keep it clear of the sidewalk, driveway, gutters and road.
Keep the pile to 10 cubic yards and inside the set-out window
A bulky pile must not exceed 10 cubic yards, about 10 by 7 by 4 feet, and it goes out by 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection day and no sooner than 24 hours before. Keep the pile six feet from vehicles and three feet from carts, out of the gutter, and clear of the sidewalk, driveway and road, and bag leaves and grass clippings.
The hauler's instruction is to dial before you pile, so a bulky pickup has to be scheduled with Atlas Disposal at 916.288.2800, through the app or by email before items go to the street, and property owners or tenants can book it. Hazardous material never goes in the pile and electronic waste has to be scheduled rather than thrown away.

No charge. Up to three free bulky item pickups per year for every residential home, each with a pile of up to 10 cubic yards. A fourth pickup is not priced anywhere published, so confirm the amount with the hauler.

Automobiles and auto parts, boats, backyard spas, batteries of any kind, ammunition or explosives, construction material, large tree stumps, medical waste, pool chemicals, propane tanks, steel pipes and hazardous waste of any kind are refused. Mattresses go out bagged, and property owners or tenants are the ones who can schedule the pickup.

Kiefer Landfill at 12701 Kiefer Blvd. in Sloughhouse is open Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the North Area Recovery Station at 4450 Roseville Road in North Highlands is open Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., both arriving at least 15 minutes before closing.
Cover and secure the load because that is the law, remove fluids and removable batteries first, take items with built-in batteries to an electronic waste program, and separate green waste and clean wood for composting. Kiefer Landfill is the only county facility that accepts treated wood waste.
Household waste, recyclable material and hard to handle waste from the public, businesses and private haulers, free residential drop-off items such as large appliances, electronics, mattresses, clean metal and up to four passenger tires, clean bricks, concrete without rebar up to 36 inches, asphalt, tiles, rocks and stucco, and treated wood waste such as railroad ties, fence posts and piers. Will you carry my couch out of my apartment?+
Dropcurb starts outside. Arrange for the sofa to be moved through the apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load and haul it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Arrange any dismantling needed to get it outside beforehand.
Do I need to wait at home for couch pickup?+
