The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

San Clemente collects through CR&R, and the bulky program is straightforward: four free pickups a calendar year, each taking up to four large items or four bags, scheduled for your regular collection day. Washing machines, dryers, sofas and refrigerators are the published examples, and white goods ride the same route as long as they fit the size and weight limits and are free of liquids, oil, gas and freon. The softer edge is household hazardous waste, because CR&R runs a free door-to-door pickup for paint, oil, batteries, fluorescents, sharps and even cathode ray tube televisions and monitors, and county residents can also drop those items free at the Orange County collection center in San Juan Capistrano.

Weekly carts for trash, recycling and organics

Accepted with preparation

Residential service runs on a three cart set for trash, recycling and organics, and every household has to separate recyclables and organic material under state law.

City cost & eligibility
From $29.64 for the monthly residential rate published on the City rate sheet for a 35 gallon three cart set covering trash, recycling and organics, with 60 and 90 gallon sets published at higher monthly rates and quarterly figures published alongside each. San Clemente residential accounts on the franchise hauler's cart service. Additional trash carts and second additional recycling or organics carts carry their own published monthly rates.
When & how
Collection runs on the account's weekly collection day, and bulky pickups are booked for that same service day.
Get it ready
Keep glass bottles, metal cans, cardboard, newspaper, plastic bottles and clean food containers numbered one through six in the recycling cart, and keep straws, utensils, plastic bags and wrappers, paper towels, items without the chasing arrows and styrofoam out. City cost & eligibility
The rate sheet lists refrigerators and air conditioners in the white goods pickup category while also stating that bulky items must not contain any type of liquid, oil, gas or freon. No separate charge is published for a cooling appliance, so call CR&R at 877-728-0446 to confirm how the refrigerant is handled and what the pickup costs before the unit goes out.
When & how

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Project debris is not part of the curbside bulky route, and covered projects have to file a waste management plan, so the load goes to the county landfill or into a container.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes construction and demolition recycling requirements, a waste management plan application, an exemption request form and the state green building requirements rather than a collection rate for household project debris. The county landfill takes public disposal from Orange County residents and businesses with proof of address, and the City also offers roll off and cub bin rate sheets, so confirm the container or the landfill fee before loading.
When & how
Take the load to Prima Deshecha Landfill in San Juan Capistrano, which opens Monday through Saturday on its own schedule, or arrange a container through the franchise hauler.
Get it ready
Cover or tarp the load before the trip, because the county states that covering the load is the law. For a covered project, file the waste management plan and the recycling summary report the City requires, and keep the recyclable portion of the debris separated so the diversion can be documented.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the bulky examples, the pickup category list or the hazardous waste list, so the machine is confirmed with the hauler before set-out.

City cost & eligibility
No published category or rate covers exercise equipment. The bulky route takes large household items inside the eight foot, four foot and 150 pound limits, and its free allowance is four items four times a year, so call CR&R at 877-728-0446 with the machine type and weight to confirm the item and any charge.
When & how
Confirm the machine before booking the pickup for the regular collection day.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart, keep the loose weights and parts with it, and check the heaviest piece against the 150 pound limit.
