The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Visalia runs its own collection rather than contracting it out: every residence gets one garbage can, one recycling can and one yard waste can on a weekly route, and extra cans are ordered from the city. Bulky material does not go at the curb, though. The city's route for it is Dump On Us, a free recycling event held at the City Yard on Cain Street where residents show a utility bill, cover the load and drop off unwanted items, with household hazardous waste accepted at the same time and per-event limits of five mattresses and four tires without rims. Mattresses and box springs also come in free during the household hazardous waste hours at that same yard, electronics have three local recyclers with free pick-up or drop-off, and anything that cannot wait for an event can go into a rented bin for a clean-up or a heavy load, as long as tires, electronics and chemicals stay out of it.

Household garbage service

Accepted with preparation

The city provides all garbage service in Visalia: one garbage can, one recycling can and one yard waste can per residence, each serviced once a week for a monthly fee, with extra cans available for an additional monthly charge.

City cost & eligibility
$23.85 per month for the standard residential set of one garbage can, one recycling can and one yard waste can, with each additional can at four dollars a month. Visalia residences on the city collection route; the city bills the monthly rate and any extra cans on the utility account, and extra cans are ordered on 559-713-4499.
When & how
Each can is serviced once a week on the address's collection day, with the residential pickup schedule published by the city. Cans go out no earlier than 7 p.m. the day before and are curbside by 6 a.m. on collection day.
Get it ready
Set the cans three feet apart from each other and ten feet from parked cars, boats, trailers, basketball hoops and similar obstructions, in the street within one foot of the curb and with fifteen feet of overhead clearance, because the automated collection arms cannot work around objects.
Residential services page: the three cans per residence, the monthly rate, extra can pricing and the can set-out rules

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses and box springs come in free at the City of Visalia Corporation Yard on Cain Street during household hazardous waste hours, and Dump On Us events take up to five mattresses each. A private recycler also removes them for a charge, and no curbside mattress collection is published.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Visalia and Tulare County residents dropping mattresses and box springs at the corporation yard, 335 N. Cain St., during the household hazardous waste hours; Dump On Us events are free to residents with proof of residency, limited to five mattresses per event.
When & how
Deliver during the household hazardous waste window, published as Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 a.m. to noon during Dump On Us events, and note that the mattress page prints an earlier closing time for the same window. Dump On Us events run on announced dates such as August 15, 2026 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and bring it during an open window rather than setting it at the curb, because Visalia does not publish a curbside mattress pickup. For a Dump On Us event, expect a covered load, an inspection and a utility bill for proof of residency at the entrance.

Couches, furniture and bulky items

Accepted with preparation

There is no curbside bulky pickup in Visalia. Large household items move through Dump On Us, where the city tells residents to dispose of unwanted items free and to hold recyclable material such as metals, mattresses and large appliances for the next event, or through a rented bin for a clean-up.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free at Dump On Us events for City of Visalia residents who show a utility bill for proof of residency, with the event's accepted and non-accepted item list published in the city's Dump On Us handout; a rented bin is a separate paid service.
When & how
Take the load to the Visalia City Yard, 335 N. Cain St., during an announced Dump On Us event, which runs in the morning with the gates closing at noon. For a clean-up that cannot wait, the city rents a two cubic yard front load bin suited to household, yard or garage clean-ups.
Get it ready
Cover the load because California law requires it, expect an inspection at the gate, and bring the utility bill for proof of residency. Keep tires, electronics and household hazardous waste out of a rented bin, because the city refuses all three in bins.
Dump On Us page: the free recycling events, the recyclable material list, the event rules and limits, the compost give-away and the landfill voucher programmeTemporary bin rental page: the bin sizes and uses, the City Hall paperwork and prepayment, the refusal of tires, e-waste and hazardous waste, and the first-Saturday e-waste window

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Large appliances are named in the material the city asks residents to hold for a Dump On Us event, where the doors have to come off before the appliance is unloaded. The household hazardous waste centre itself refuses appliances.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free at Dump On Us events for City of Visalia residents who show a utility bill for proof of residency, with large appliances named among the recyclable material the city collects there.
When & how
Bring the appliance to the Visalia City Yard, 335 N. Cain St., during an announced Dump On Us event, and expect the gates to close at noon.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from every large appliance before the load reaches the gate, because the city states that requirement in the event rules and from the Dump On Us rules. Keep appliances out of the household hazardous waste centre, which lists them among the items it does not accept.
Dump On Us page: the free recycling events, the recyclable material list, the event rules and limits, the compost give-away and the landfill voucher programmeHousehold hazardous waste collection site page: the Cain Avenue facility, its free Saturday hours, the accepted streams and the refusal list

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are accepted at Dump On Us events, and the city lists three local recyclers with free pick-up or drop-off: Electronic Recycling of Tulare County, Sequoia Community Corps through CSET, and Xtreme Electronic Recycling. Some electronic waste is also accepted at the household hazardous waste facility on the first Saturday of each month.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for Visalia residents at Dump On Us events with proof of residency; the city's e-waste page describes free pick-up from Electronic Recycling of Tulare County and a free drop-off site and pick-ups from Sequoia Community Corps, with Xtreme Electronic Recycling also offering free drop-off locations.
When & how
Use a Dump On Us event during its morning window, call Electronic Recycling of Tulare County on 559-783-3713 or Sequoia Community Corps on 559-830-9455 to arrange a pick-up, or bring some electronic waste to the household hazardous waste facility on the first Saturday of the month during its regular hours, since the bin page publishes that window.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data properly rather than deleting files, keep working devices for donation through Goodwill, the Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity's ReStore, and remember the household hazardous waste centre refuses televisions and electronic waste on ordinary Saturdays even though the first-Saturday window takes some of it.
E-waste page: the donation advice and the three local recyclers with free pick-up and drop-off, including the mattress removal charge at one of themDump On Us page: the free recycling events, the recyclable material list, the event rules and limits, the compost give-away and the landfill voucher programmeTemporary bin rental page: the bin sizes and uses, the City Hall paperwork and prepayment, the refusal of tires, e-waste and hazardous waste, and the first-Saturday e-waste window

Concrete, dirt and construction material

Accepted with preparation

Concrete is named in the material the city collects at Dump On Us events, and the city rents a fifteen yard low boy bin specifically for cement, dirt and other heavy materials, with larger roll-off yard boxes for general trash, brush and green waste.

City cost & eligibility
Concrete is free at Dump On Us events for residents with proof of residency, while a rented bin is priced from the city's bin rental rate schedule, which is published as a PDF the reader could not extract, so the rate and the current terms are confirmed with the Solid Waste office at 559-713-4499 before the bin is ordered.
When & how
Use an announced Dump On Us event during its morning window, or arrange a bin delivery; a new account signs the guidelines and prepays at City Hall, 707 W Acequia Ave., and an existing account orders another delivery on 559-713-4499.
Get it ready
Separate heavy material from general debris because the bin sizes differ by use, and keep tires, electronics and household hazardous waste out of any rented bin, since the city refuses all three. Cover the load for a Dump On Us trip, because California law requires it and the gate inspects loads.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on any Visalia list, so a treadmill or weight machine is confirmed with the Solid Waste Division before it is loaded, even though a Dump On Us event takes unwanted items and metals.

City cost & eligibility
Dump On Us events are free for residents and the city publishes no separate bulky rate, but exercise equipment is not on any retained list, so the Solid Waste Division confirms at 559-713-4428 whether the machine can come to an event or should go into a rented bin.
When & how
Call the division before an event day, then take the machine to the City Yard during the event window or arrange a bin delivery if the city directs that instead.
Get it ready
Describe the machine and its size when calling, tie or fold down the deck and handles, and take off the console and any battery pack so the electronics can go through an e-waste route rather than into a bin, where electronics are refused.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Visalia has no curbside bulky pickup. The city's own bulky routes are the free Dump On Us events, held at the City Yard on Cain Street with a utility bill for proof of residency, up to two landfill vouchers per household each calendar year, and rented bins for clean-ups.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free at Dump On Us events for City of Visalia residents with proof of residency, plus up to two landfill vouchers per household per calendar year collected at City Hall; rented bins are a separate paid service.
When & how
Bring the load to an announced Dump On Us event at 335 N. Cain St., where gates close at noon, or request a voucher from the customer service line at 559-713-4499 for a landfill trip, which residents may do twice a year.
Get it ready
Cover every load and expect an inspection at the gate, and keep the per-event limits in mind: five mattresses and four tires without rims, with no box or moving trucks allowed. Rented bins refuse tires, electronics and household hazardous waste, and household hazardous waste is easier to bring straight to the same yard during its Saturday windows.

Household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

The City of Visalia and Tulare County run a household chemical waste collection facility at 335 North Cain Avenue that takes environmentally harmful material free of charge on Saturdays, and Dump On Us events also accept household hazardous waste.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free of charge to households at the City of Visalia/Tulare County Household Chemical Waste Collection facility, with the accepted and refused material lists in the city's brochure; businesses, industrial and agricultural waste are refused and have to use a licensed contractor.
When & how
The facility is open year round on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and during Dump On Us events from 7 a.m. to noon, with the mattress page printing an earlier Saturday closing time for the same site.
Get it ready
Keep appliances, electronic waste and televisions, compressed gas and propane cylinders, radioactive material such as smoke detectors, ammunition and explosives out of the hazardous waste load, because the facility refuses all of them. Package home-generated sharps only in approved certified containers, and take compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes to a participating hardware store instead.

Cans three feet apart, ten feet from anything else

Set garbage, recycling and yard waste cans three feet apart from each other and ten feet from parked cars, boats, trailers, basketball hoops and similar obstructions, in the street within one foot of the curb and where there is fifteen feet of overhead clearance. Cans go out no earlier than 7 p.m. the day before collection and are curbside by 6 a.m. on collection day, because the automatic arms cannot service a can boxed in by other objects.

Residential services page: the three cans per residence, the monthly rate, extra can pricing and the can set-out rules

A Dump On Us load arrives covered, inspected and with the utility bill

Bring the City of Visalia utility bill for proof of residency at the entrance, cover the load because California law requires it, and expect the load to be inspected at the gate. Doors come off every large appliance, household hazardous waste is accepted at the same event, gates close at noon, and the per-event limits are five mattresses and four tires without rims. Box and moving trucks are not allowed, shredding is limited to two banker boxes of documents per person, and free compost is available while supplies last with one load per event.

Dump On Us page: the free recycling events, the recyclable material list, the event rules and limits, the compost give-away and the landfill voucher programme

Rented bins refuse tires, electronics and chemicals

The city rents a two cubic yard front load bin for household, yard or garage clean-ups, a fifteen yard low boy for cement, dirt and other heavy material, and twenty to forty yard roll-off yard boxes for general trash, brush and green waste. Tires, electronic waste and household hazardous waste are not allowed in any of them, so those three streams go to a Dump On Us event, the household hazardous waste windows or an e-waste recycler instead.

Temporary bin rental page: the bin sizes and uses, the City Hall paperwork and prepayment, the refusal of tires, e-waste and hazardous waste, and the first-Saturday e-waste window

Some material never goes to the hazardous waste centre

The household chemical waste facility refuses appliances, electronic waste and televisions, compressed gas and propane cylinders, radioactive material including smoke detectors, ammunition and explosives, and all business, industrial and agricultural waste. Propane tanks should be exchanged or taken to a propane supplier, the county landfill and Dump On Us events take tanks only with the valve removed, and home-generated sharps are accepted only in approved certified containers.

Rent a temporary bin for a clean-up or heavy load

A household, yard or garage clean-up, or a load of cement, dirt or other heavy material that needs a container rather than a car trip.

Cost & conditions

Pay a recycler to collect mattresses and box springs

A household that would rather have mattresses and box springs collected or removed than drive them to the yard.

Cost & conditions
$10 per piece for mattress and box spring removal by the local recycler the city lists. Electronic Recycling of Tulare County offers the removal service and free e-waste pick-up on 559-783-3713; the city lists it on its e-waste page rather than publishing the terms itself.
Arrange it
Call the recycler at 559-783-3713 to arrange the removal and confirm the current per-piece terms before the pieces are moved.

This is a private service rather than a city programme, the free city routes are the corporation yard drop-off and the Dump On Us events with their five-mattress limit, and the recycler sets its own terms.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Visalia's self-haul answer is the Visalia City Yard at 335 N. Cain St. Dump On Us events run there on announced dates, free to residents who show a utility bill, with gates closing at noon, loads covered and inspected, doors removed from large appliances, household hazardous waste accepted at the same time, and per-event limits of five mattresses and four tires without rims, plus free compost while supplies last. Outside those events, the same yard takes mattresses and box springs at no cost during the household hazardous waste hours, which run year round on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 7 a.m. to noon during events, and the household chemical waste facility there takes paints, cleaners, chemicals, automotive fluids, batteries and tubes free while refusing appliances, electronics and televisions, propane and other compressed gas, smoke detectors, ammunition and explosives. Where do Visalia mattresses go?

To the City of Visalia Corporation Yard at 335 N. Cain St., where Visalia and Tulare County residents can drop mattresses and box springs at no cost during the household hazardous waste hours on Saturdays, or to a Dump On Us event, which takes up to five mattresses each and needs a utility bill for proof of residency. A private recycler the city lists also removes mattresses and box springs for a per-piece charge.Official guidance

Does Visalia collect furniture from the curb?

No curbside bulky collection is published. Furniture moves through a Dump On Us event, where the city says unwanted items are disposed of free for residents who show a utility bill, or through a rented bin for a household, yard or garage clean-up, with the bin refusing tires, electronics and household hazardous waste.Official guidance

Why do appliance doors have to come off at Dump On Us?

Because the city lists it as an event rule: doors must be removed from all large appliances before they are unloaded at a Dump On Us event, which also takes other recyclable material such as metals and mattresses. How do Visalia Dump On Us events work?

They are free recycling events at the Visalia City Yard, 335 N. Cain St., where residents show a utility bill for proof of residency and drop unwanted items, with the city asking residents to hold recyclables such as metals, concrete, large appliances, mattresses, tires without rims, electronics and green waste for the next event. Loads must be covered and are inspected, gates close at noon, and each event is limited to five mattresses and four tires without rims, with household hazardous waste accepted at the same time.Official guidance

Is there a curbside bulky item pickup in Visalia?

No. The city publishes weekly cart service and the Dump On Us events, plus up to two landfill vouchers per household each calendar year, but no curbside collection of furniture, appliances or mattresses. A clean-up that cannot wait for an event goes into a rented bin, which will not accept tires, electronics or household hazardous waste.Official guidance

Where do Visalia batteries and bulbs go?

To the household chemical waste facility at 335 North Cain Avenue during its Saturday window, which takes batteries and fluorescent tubes free of charge along with paints, cleaners, chemicals and automotive fluids. Compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes are also recycled at local hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Orchard Supply Hardware, and sharps are accepted only in approved certified containers.Official guidance

Can working items be donated in Visalia instead?

Yes. The city points residents to Goodwill, the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore for electronics and other items that still work, and it recommends donating rather than landfilling anything usable before a Dump On Us trip.Official guidance
