Mattresses and box springs come in free at the City of Visalia Corporation Yard on Cain Street during household hazardous waste hours, and Dump On Us events take up to five mattresses each. A private recycler also removes them for a charge, and no curbside mattress collection is published.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Visalia and Tulare County residents dropping mattresses and box springs at the corporation yard, 335 N. Cain St., during the household hazardous waste hours; Dump On Us events are free to residents with proof of residency, limited to five mattresses per event.
When & how
Deliver during the household hazardous waste window, published as Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 a.m. to noon during Dump On Us events, and note that the mattress page prints an earlier closing time for the same window. Dump On Us events run on announced dates such as August 15, 2026 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and bring it during an open window rather than setting it at the curb, because Visalia does not publish a curbside mattress pickup. For a Dump On Us event, expect a covered load, an inspection and a utility bill for proof of residency at the entrance.
Cans three feet apart, ten feet from anything else
Set garbage, recycling and yard waste cans three feet apart from each other and ten feet from parked cars, boats, trailers, basketball hoops and similar obstructions, in the street within one foot of the curb and where there is fifteen feet of overhead clearance. Cans go out no earlier than 7 p.m. the day before collection and are curbside by 6 a.m. on collection day, because the automatic arms cannot service a can boxed in by other objects.
A Dump On Us load arrives covered, inspected and with the utility bill
Bring the City of Visalia utility bill for proof of residency at the entrance, cover the load because California law requires it, and expect the load to be inspected at the gate. Doors come off every large appliance, household hazardous waste is accepted at the same event, gates close at noon, and the per-event limits are five mattresses and four tires without rims. Box and moving trucks are not allowed, shredding is limited to two banker boxes of documents per person, and free compost is available while supplies last with one load per event.
Rented bins refuse tires, electronics and chemicals
The city rents a two cubic yard front load bin for household, yard or garage clean-ups, a fifteen yard low boy for cement, dirt and other heavy material, and twenty to forty yard roll-off yard boxes for general trash, brush and green waste. Tires, electronic waste and household hazardous waste are not allowed in any of them, so those three streams go to a Dump On Us event, the household hazardous waste windows or an e-waste recycler instead.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

This is a private service rather than a city programme, the free city routes are the corporation yard drop-off and the Dump On Us events with their five-mattress limit, and the recycler sets its own terms.

Household hazardous material free of charge, including paints, cleaners, chemicals, garden and pool products, automotive fluids, batteries and fluorescent tubes, plus mattresses and box springs at no cost from Visalia and Tulare County residents, and some electronic waste on the first Saturday of each month.
Appliances, electronic waste and televisions on ordinary Saturdays, compressed gas and propane cylinders, radioactive material such as smoke detectors, ammunition and explosives, and business, industrial or agricultural waste are all refused.
