The Larimer County Landfill recycles appliances as a special waste, charging one per-item fee for a unit without Freon and a higher one for a unit that contains it, on top of the load charge. Microwaves are not counted as appliances and go in as regular trash, and the Timberline Recycling Center refuses refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and other Freon items.
City cost & eligibility
$20 per appliance without Freon at the Larimer County Landfill, with a higher published per-item fee for an appliance that contains Freon. Residential loads at the Larimer County Landfill. Accepted appliance types are furnaces, dishwashers, ovens and stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters.
When & how
Appliance recycling runs whenever the landfill gate is open, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Reports on units already collected curbside follow the hauler's own schedule.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep the doors with it. Take a Freon unit to the landfill rather than the Timberline Recycling Center, which refuses Freon items and pressurized containers such as propane tanks.
Follow the collector's instructions for cart placement, and bring carts in overnight if they stay out longer than twelve hours so the address does not draw a code warning. Every cart needs three feet of clearance on the sides and sixteen feet of overhead clearance so the truck can reach it.
Unsecured or uncovered loads are charged double at every Larimer County solid waste location, so tarp and tie down anything headed to the landfill or the recycling center. Both sites close for mud, wind and severe weather, and the county posts current restrictions on its solid waste home page.
Hazardous waste arrives boxed and upright, with no container over five gallons
The household hazardous waste facility takes up to thirty gallons per vehicle, measured by the size of the containers rather than how full they are, which is roughly four medium moving boxes. No single container may be larger than five gallons, up to ten fluorescent bulbs are taken per visit, and material has to arrive in non-leaking labeled containers, packaged upright in boxes rather than trash bags or trash cans.
The hazardous waste facility is closed to the public every Wednesday
Household hazardous waste is accepted Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the facility is closed to the public on Wednesday, when the site is reserved for business waste by appointment. Household material from Larimer County residents is free, and waste from another county has to go to that county's own program.

Two free bulk items a year through the City's contracted collector

A household with electronics, batteries, paint, motor oil, clean aggregates or unpainted wood that does not belong in a curbside cart.

From $5 for entry fee for the hard-to-recycle materials yard, with additional per-item or per-cubic-yard fees on electronics, wood waste and yard trimmings. Residents and commercial customers; batteries, antifreeze, motor oil and cooking oil are limited to residential loads, and the everyday recyclables yard stays free.
Arrange it
Load the material yourself, drive to the center, and unload it in the hard-to-recycle yard, where staff can point out the right drop-off spot.
The center offers no pickup service, commercial customers cannot bring batteries, and the appliance and Freon items, propane tanks and other pressurized containers are refused. Confirm the current hours before a trip.

Opt out of the City contract and use your own licensed hauler

$11.41 per month opt-out fee for a household that keeps its own licensed hauler instead of the contracted collector, with a separate City administrative fee added to the bill. Single family homes and small multi-family buildings of seven units or fewer inside Fort Collins city limits; not paying the service or opt-out fee is a City Code violation.

Confirm the account with a hauler that holds a City hauler license, then file the opt-out with the City so the contract charge is replaced by the opt-out fee.
Every hauler collecting recycling, compost or waste in Fort Collins has to hold a City license and report data twice a year, so an unlicensed collector is not an option.

Household loose waste, furniture and bulky junk, mattresses and box springs, appliances including furnaces, dishwashers, ovens, stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters, electronics by weight, tires within the state limit, rubble such as concrete, dirt, sod, asphalt and tree trunks, shingles, drywall, clean lumber and pallets and green waste such as branches, limbs and grass.
Uncovered or unsecured loads are charged double, the county limits tires to nine per trip under state law, and green waste cannot include bags, containers, fiberboard, food waste, metal, painted wood, plastic, plywood, root balls, soil, trash, treated wood or trunks larger than two feet in diameter. The landfill closes for mud, wind and severe weather and the county posts restrictions on its site.
Landfill disposal, electronics recycling and the residential recycle bins are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The site is closed New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and is open on the days after several of those holidays.
From $20 for flat fee for a car, SUV or passenger van load, with a higher flat fee for a pickup or cargo van, a per-cubic-yard rate with a two cubic yard minimum for trailers and rental trucks, and special waste fees for mattresses, appliances, electronics and tires. Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
