When & how
Take the unit to the hard-to-recycle center at 6400 Arapahoe Road in Boulder, open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and keep the unit out of any landfill load. Confirm with the receiving site what it needs for a refrigerant unit before the trip.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, take the doors off so it cannot be entered, and do not leave it out with a mixed household pile. The landfill refuses refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, so a cooling unit never travels in a general load.
Landfill loads are tarped, weighed and priced by vehicle
The Front Range Landfill in Erie is open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sundays and on some holidays. Every vehicle weighs in and out on certified scales, a car load and a pickup load are charged flat rates that rise when the waste sits above the top of the cab, and wood, concrete, drywall, siding and dirt are charged by the ton with a minimum. Loads must be covered, tarped and secured or they are charged double, and anyone who gets out of a vehicle needs a reflective safety vest.
The landfill refuses cooling units, electronics and hazardous material
The Front Range Landfill does not accept refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, batteries, electronic waste, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids including paint and oil, mercury fluorescent bulbs, propane containers, tires or toxic waste, and electronic devices have been banned from Colorado landfill disposal since July 1, 2013. Those categories move to Eco-Cycle's hard-to-recycle center in Boulder or to the county Hazardous Materials Management Facility, so plan the load in two parts rather than mixing them.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Bring the load in a vehicle rather than by mail, because the center asks customers not to ship material.

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, batteries, electronic waste, hazardous waste, hot ashes, liquids including paint, oil, septage and chemicals, mercury fluorescent bulbs, propane containers, tires and toxic waste are refused, and electronic devices have been banned from Colorado landfill disposal since July 1, 2013. Loads must be covered, tarped and secured or they are charged double, and anyone who exits a vehicle needs a reflective safety vest, sold on site for 8 dollars.
Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed Sunday, with shortened hours on some holidays and closures for high winds or severe weather. All vehicles weigh in and out on certified scales.
