City cost & eligibility
No charge. Metal appliances such as ovens, washing machines and dryers are named on the acceptable list for the bulky collection, and a resident vehicle disposes of municipal solid waste free at the transfer station within the published allowances. An appliance containing Freon, such as an air conditioner or refrigerator, is refused on the bulky route and accepted at the transfer station for a fee, so confirm that charge before hauling.

Book the bulky collection through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200, or take a Freon appliance to the transfer station at 61 Crescent Street, where the vehicle first needs a Residential Disposal Pass and, for a truck, van or trailer, a Residential Disposal Permit.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and secure the door, keep a Freon unit off the bulky pile because it is refused there, and bring the vehicle in empty and half a tank of gas when the permit is issued so it can be weighed.
A bulky collection is one cubic yard and has to be booked in your zone's window
Eligible households get two bulky collections a calendar year, each limited to one cubic yard of material, about four feet by two feet, and each address sits in one of four zones with a two-week sign-up window twice a year. Items go out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 48 hours early, at least three feet from mailboxes, fences, parked vehicles and utility poles, without blocking the sidewalk or street, with only the items reported at scheduling collected and similar materials grouped together.
The transfer station needs a pass, and a truck or trailer also needs a permit
Every residential vehicle at the Crescent Street transfer station needs a valid City of Norwalk Residential Disposal Pass, and a residential pickup truck, SUV, cargo van or towing trailer also needs a Residential Disposal Permit issued at the station, with the vehicle brought in empty and half a tank of gas so it can be weighed. A resident car disposes of municipal solid waste free and a residential pickup or trailer gets one ton free, while commercial vehicles pay by the ton and an unregistered vehicle pays a minimum, all by credit or debit card only.
The bulky collection refuses hazardous waste, Freon appliances, electronics, tires, vehicle parts, propane tanks, yard waste, recycling materials, clothing and textiles, liquid paint and construction or remodelling debris. The transfer station refuses ammunition and explosives, hazardous materials, asbestos, counter tops, asphalt shingles, sheetrock, ceramic sinks and toilets, prescription drugs, construction and demolition debris and wet paint. Hazardous chemicals, paints, fuels and fluorescent bulbs go to the city's free household hazardous waste day instead.
