Units containing freon are collected separately, oil storage tanks have to be cleaned and cut in half, and state law requires refrigerator doors to be removed.

No charge. Town of Hempstead sanitation customers using the scheduled Special Pickup, for which the town publishes no fee, and residents eligible for the Homeowner Disposal Area, which also takes appliances and metal.

Call 516-378-8484 for the special pickup, and mention that the unit contains freon so it is placed on the separate collection. The Homeowner Disposal Area runs daily except town holidays.
Get it ready
Remove refrigerator and freezer doors as state law requires, cut oil storage tanks in half after cleaning them, and drain any engine or appliance holding oil before a metal item leaves. Keep freon units whole and identify them when you call.
Household garbage goes to the kerb before 5 a.m. on the collection day and no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before. Cans may be no larger than 45 gallons, no can or bag may weigh more than 75 pounds, and cardboard boxes may not be used to hold refuse.
