Mattresses and box springs go out through a scheduled Special Pickup, and the town requires each one to be sealed inside a bedbug-proof bag. Failure to bag bedding is a violation of department regulations and of Section 128 of the Town Code.

No charge. Town of Hempstead sanitation customers, with the bedding rule applying in Sanitation Districts 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The town publishes no fee for the special pickup.

Get it ready
Seal the mattress or box spring inside a single bedbug-proof bag, and note that a heavy duty bag from a new mattress may be used if the bedding is completely sealed inside it. Keep the bag intact until the crew collects it.
Household garbage goes to the kerb before 5 a.m. on the collection day and no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before. Cans may be no larger than 45 gallons, no can or bag may weigh more than 75 pounds, and cardboard boxes may not be used to hold refuse.
