Mattresses and box springs are the first two items named in the city's non-metal bulk definition, so a bed goes out on the weekly bulk day like a couch. One non-metal bulk item per household per week is the published limit, and a mattress can also be dropped at the Recycling Center.

When & how
Set the mattress out no earlier than sundown the night before your second collection day of the week, and count it as the one non-metal bulk item for that week.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry and together, stand them against the curb rather than flat in the street, and leave them out of the thirty gallon refuse barrels that the code requires for household trash.
Section 91-36B of the city code requires garbage and bulk at the curb no earlier than sundown the evening before the scheduled pickup, and the city warns that a set out that breaks the rule can bring a fine. Household refuse goes in barrels no larger than thirty gallons with plastic bags under fifty pounds, and supermarket shopping bags are not to be used for garbage. During compost season leaves and brush go out in open containers or paper bags, never plastic, on Wednesdays.
Non-metal bulk is a curb service: one item per household on the second collection day of the week, which the city runs on a Thursday or Friday, from private homes and buildings of six units or less. Metal bulk is not: appliances, metal shelving and bicycles need an appointment through the Mayor's Help Line, or a trip to the Recycling Center where refrigerant is removed free. Buildings with more than six units arrange bulk through their super, landlord or management company.

Only one non-metal item per household per week, buildings of six units or less only, and appliances are not part of this stream because they are metal bulk and need an appointment; construction material, tires and chemicals are refused.
