Get it ready
Tie a sleeper sofa closed, cut and tie rugs in three foot lengths, keep the piece whole and reachable from the curb, and keep construction material, motor oil, compressed gas tanks and tires out of the pile because none of those are collected at the curb.
Section 91-36B of the city code requires garbage and bulk at the curb no earlier than sundown the evening before the scheduled pickup, and the city warns that a set out that breaks the rule can bring a fine. Household refuse goes in barrels no larger than thirty gallons with plastic bags under fifty pounds, and supermarket shopping bags are not to be used for garbage. During compost season leaves and brush go out in open containers or paper bags, never plastic, on Wednesdays.
Non-metal bulk is a curb service: one item per household on the second collection day of the week, which the city runs on a Thursday or Friday, from private homes and buildings of six units or less. Metal bulk is not: appliances, metal shelving and bicycles need an appointment through the Mayor's Help Line, or a trip to the Recycling Center where refrigerant is removed free. Buildings with more than six units arrange bulk through their super, landlord or management company.
