The local disposal guide
Yonkers collects its own refuse and splits bulk into two streams. Non-metal bulk goes to the curb once a week from homes and buildings of six units or less, one item on the second collection day, and the city's own definition of that stream names mattresses, box springs, tables, chairs, couches, sleeper sofas and tied rugs. Metal bulk, which covers washers, dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, stoves, hot water heaters, bed frames, metal shelving and bicycles, is collected by appointment through the Mayor's Help Line instead, and the city removes refrigerant free at the Recycling Center. Televisions, computers and small electronics go to that same center on Saw Mill River Road, with a curbside appointment needed only for a television larger than 36 inches, and leftover house paint is accepted there through PaintCare. Construction debris, grass clippings, tires at the curb, solvents and motor oil are the items the city refuses, and tires carry the one published price in the programme.

Electronics go to the Recycling Center rather than the curb. The city encourages residents to drop off computer monitors, televisions, small appliances, food processors, paper shredders, CD players and nickel cadmium batteries there, and the one exception is a television larger than 36 inches, which can be collected curbside but only by appointment through the Mayor's Help Line.
Yonkers refuses construction material on every city route. The curbside rules bar construction material from regular trash, and the Recycling Center bans construction and demolition debris outright along with roofing materials. A renovation load therefore needs a private container or hauler rather than a city collection.
Exercise equipment appears in neither of the city's bulk lists. The non-metal list is a closed set of furniture and bedding items, and the metal list covers appliances, bicycles and metal shelving but no exercise machines, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

Bulk material goes out no earlier than sundown the evening before the scheduled pickup under the city code, and everything at the curb stays inside the barrel and bag limits the code sets.
Tires are refused at the curb but accepted at the Recycling Center, and they are the one item in the whole programme with a published price. The city charges eight dollars per tire and takes them without rims, and the same page bars rims and car batteries from curbside collection.
Leftover house paint is the one chemical Yonkers takes, through the PaintCare programme at the Recycling Center, limited to five gallons per visit with sealed original containers. Everything else on the chemical shelf is refused: the same page rejects aerosol spray paints, paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, glue, caulk, roofing tar, pesticides and cleaning chemicals, and the recycling rules refuse oil, grease, hazardous waste and gas cylinders.
The handoff matters
Section 91-36B of the city code requires garbage and bulk at the curb no earlier than sundown the evening before the scheduled pickup, and the city warns that a set out that breaks the rule can bring a fine. Household refuse goes in barrels no larger than thirty gallons with plastic bags under fifty pounds, and supermarket shopping bags are not to be used for garbage. During compost season leaves and brush go out in open containers or paper bags, never plastic, on Wednesdays.

Metal bulk is not: appliances, metal shelving and bicycles need an appointment through the Mayor's Help Line, or a trip to the Recycling Center where refrigerant is removed free. Buildings with more than six units arrange bulk through their super, landlord or management company.

Yes. The city's non-metal bulk list names couches, chairs, tables, sleeper sofas that are tied closed and rugs cut and tied in three foot lengths, and one of those items per household goes out each week on the second collection day from homes and buildings of six units or less.Official guidance
Use your weekly non-metal bulk day. Mattresses and box springs are named in the city's non-metal bulk list, one item per household goes out on the second collection day of the week for buildings of six units or less, and the mattress can be dropped at the Recycling Center instead if you can carry it.Official guidance
Call the Mayor's Help Line on 914-377-HELP (4357), because appliances are metal bulk and are collected by appointment rather than on the weekly non-metal bulk day. Remove the refrigerator door first, and note that the city removes the freon free of charge if you take the unit to the Recycling Center instead.Official guidance
To the Yonkers Recycling Center at 735 Saw Mill River Road, which takes computer monitors, televisions, small appliances and similar electronic equipment from residents with valid identification. A television larger than 36 inches is the exception: it can be collected at the curb by appointment on 914-377-HELP (4357).Official guidance
One non-metal bulk item per household each week, on your second collection day, from a private home or a building of six units or less. Metal bulk works differently: it is collected by appointment on 914-377-HELP (4357) or dropped at the Recycling Center, and buildings with more than six units go through their management company.Official guidance
No earlier than sundown the evening before your scheduled pickup, which is what Section 91-36B of the city code requires, and the city warns that putting material out early can bring a fine. Rugs need cutting and tying in three foot lengths before they go out.Official guidance
The city does, through the Department of Public Works. The Sanitation Division collects household refuse and commingled recycling from homes and apartment buildings, the Refuse Disposal Division runs the Recycling Center on Saw Mill River Road, and the Refuse Department answers questions on 914-377-6724.Official guidance
Call the Mayor's Help Line on 914-377-HELP (4357). Appointments are what the city uses for metal bulk and for a television larger than 36 inches, while the weekly non-metal bulk item needs no call and simply goes out on your second collection day of the week.Official guidance
The curb service covers private homes and buildings with six units or less. The city tells larger buildings to speak to their super, landlord or management company about bulk disposal, and the Recycling Center is restricted to buildings of six families and under as well.Official guidance
Commingled recyclables go out at the curb every other week, alongside newspapers and leaves for compost, and buildings over six units arrange their own recycling with their management company. Recycle Coach gives the collection schedule and weekly reminders.Official guidance
