Appliances are metal bulk in Yonkers, a separate stream from couches and mattresses. Washers, dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, stoves and hot water heaters are collected only by appointment through the Mayor's Help Line, or dropped at the Recycling Center, where the city removes refrigerant free of charge and where a refrigerator door must be taken off before collection.

Get it ready
Remove the door from a refrigerator before collection, empty the unit, tape or tie the doors and cords on anything else, and bring proof of residency with matching vehicle registration if you are taking it to the center.
Section 91-36B of the city code requires garbage and bulk at the curb no earlier than sundown the evening before the scheduled pickup, and the city warns that a set out that breaks the rule can bring a fine. Household refuse goes in barrels no larger than thirty gallons with plastic bags under fifty pounds, and supermarket shopping bags are not to be used for garbage. During compost season leaves and brush go out in open containers or paper bags, never plastic, on Wednesdays.
Non-metal bulk is a curb service: one item per household on the second collection day of the week, which the city runs on a Thursday or Friday, from private homes and buildings of six units or less. Metal bulk is not: appliances, metal shelving and bicycles need an appointment through the Mayor's Help Line, or a trip to the Recycling Center where refrigerant is removed free. Buildings with more than six units arrange bulk through their super, landlord or management company.
