Norwalk recycles mattresses and box springs free at three Saturday events each year, and a mattress is also on the bulky collection's acceptable list.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city accepts mattresses and box springs free at its special collection events through the Connecticut Bye Bye Mattress program, open to City of Norwalk residents, and a mattress is also named on the acceptable list for the bulky collection, whose own charge is not published.
When & how
Take the mattress to the Norwalk Public Works Center at 15 South Smith Street on Saturday April 18, Saturday June 6 or Saturday September 12, 2026 between 9 a.m. and noon, in the parking area next to the gas pumps, or book a bulky collection through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200.
Get it ready
The mattress and box spring have to be dry and intact, so keep them covered in transit and out of the rain, and leave cushions, toppers, bedding, air mattresses, water beds, futons and furniture behind because the events refuse them.
A bulky collection is one cubic yard and has to be booked in your zone's window
Eligible households get two bulky collections a calendar year, each limited to one cubic yard of material, about four feet by two feet, and each address sits in one of four zones with a two-week sign-up window twice a year. Items go out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 48 hours early, at least three feet from mailboxes, fences, parked vehicles and utility poles, without blocking the sidewalk or street, with only the items reported at scheduling collected and similar materials grouped together.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
An eligible household in the 4th Taxing District that receives city garbage collection, with up to one cubic yard of furniture, a mattress, rolled rugs, metal items, metal appliances or large plastic items.
