A clear count. An exact price.

Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Norwalk recycles mattresses and box springs free at three Saturday events each year, and a mattress is also on the bulky collection's acceptable list.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city accepts mattresses and box springs free at its special collection events through the Connecticut Bye Bye Mattress program, open to City of Norwalk residents, and a mattress is also named on the acceptable list for the bulky collection, whose own charge is not published.
When & how
Take the mattress to the Norwalk Public Works Center at 15 South Smith Street on Saturday April 18, Saturday June 6 or Saturday September 12, 2026 between 9 a.m. and noon, in the parking area next to the gas pumps, or book a bulky collection through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200.
Get it ready
The mattress and box spring have to be dry and intact, so keep them covered in transit and out of the rain, and leave cushions, toppers, bedding, air mattresses, water beds, futons and furniture behind because the events refuse them.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is acceptable on the bulky collection and at the transfer station as a bulky item.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A resident car, minivan or SUV disposes of municipal solid waste free at the transfer station with a Residential Disposal Pass, and a residential pickup truck, cargo van or towing trailer gets one ton free with a Residential Disposal Permit as well. Furniture is also acceptable on the city bulky collection, whose charge is not published, so confirm it when booking.
When & how
Book a bulky collection through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200 during your zone's sign-up window, or take the furniture to the transfer station at 61 Crescent Street during its published hours.
Get it ready
Put items out by 7 a.m. on the collection day and no more than 48 hours early, keep them three feet from mailboxes, fences, parked vehicles and utility poles, report every item when scheduling because unlisted items are left behind, and do not use cardboard boxes.

Household appliances

Accepted with preparation

Metal appliances are acceptable on the bulky collection, while an appliance containing Freon is refused there and taken at the transfer station for a fee.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Metal appliances such as ovens, washing machines and dryers are named on the acceptable list for the bulky collection, and a resident vehicle disposes of municipal solid waste free at the transfer station within the published allowances. An appliance containing Freon, such as an air conditioner or refrigerator, is refused on the bulky route and accepted at the transfer station for a fee, so confirm that charge before hauling.
When & how
Book the bulky collection through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200, or take a Freon appliance to the transfer station at 61 Crescent Street, where the vehicle first needs a Residential Disposal Pass and, for a truck, van or trailer, a Residential Disposal Permit.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and secure the door, keep a Freon unit off the bulky pile because it is refused there, and bring the vehicle in empty and half a tank of gas when the permit is issued so it can be weighed.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are refused on the bulky collection and accepted at the Crescent Street recycling centre.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The recycling centre at the Crescent Street transfer station accepts cell phones, computer monitors, copiers, DVD players, iPods, fax machines, keyboards, PDAs, printers, televisions and VCRs, and a resident car, minivan or SUV pays nothing for municipal solid waste there with a Residential Disposal Pass. The household hazardous waste flyer routes Norwalk residents' electronics to the transfer station rather than the hazardous waste day.
When & how
Take the device to the transfer station at 61 Crescent Street, open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a valid City of Norwalk Residential Disposal Pass.
Get it ready
Keep electronics off the bulky pile because they are refused there, and keep them off the household hazardous waste load as well, because the flyer sends electronics to the transfer station instead.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Construction and remodelling debris is refused on the bulky collection and at the transfer station, so the city publishes no route for it.

City cost & eligibility
The bulky collection refuses construction and remodelling debris including concrete, sheetrock, masonry, toilets, sinks, pipes, shingles, tile and furnace, and the transfer station's unacceptable list includes construction and demolition debris, sheetrock, asphalt shingles, counter tops and ceramic items. No city rate exists for the material, so a project load needs a private hauler or a receiving facility outside these programs.
When & how
Arrange a private hauler or container company before the project starts, because neither the bulky collection nor the transfer station will take project debris.
Get it ready
Keep construction material off the bulky pile and out of the transfer station load, keep electrical, plumbing and ceramic fixtures separate because they are refused as construction and demolition material, and check the receiving site's list before the load leaves.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky collection list, so Customer Service has to confirm the machine before it is scheduled.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment is not named as acceptable or unacceptable on the bulky collection, and no fee is published for the collection, so describe the machine to Customer Service at (203) 854-3200 and confirm both acceptance and cost before booking.
When & how
Call Customer Service at (203) 854-3200 during your zone's sign-up window and confirm the machine before it is scheduled.
Get it ready
Fold or tie down the deck and handles, remove any console or battery pack so it can be handled separately, and keep the machine inside the one cubic yard limit if it is accepted.

Mixed household bulky loads

Accepted with preparation

Eligible Norwalk households get two bulky collections a calendar year of up to one cubic yard each, and the transfer station takes bulky items from residents with a pass.

City cost & eligibility
The bulky collection is an eligibility-based entitlement and the city publishes no fee for it, while the transfer station's cost table gives a resident car free municipal solid waste, a residential pickup truck, cargo van or towing trailer one free ton, commercial vehicles $125 per ton and an unregistered vehicle a $20 or $30 minimum. Confirm whether a scheduled collection carries a charge when you call Customer Service at (203) 854-3200.
When & how
Book through Customer Service at (203) 854-3200 during your zone's two-week sign-up window, which runs twice a year between February and September, or take the load to the transfer station at 61 Crescent Street with a Residential Disposal Pass.
Get it ready
Keep each collection to one cubic yard, put items out by 7 a.m. and no more than 48 hours early, report every item when scheduling, group similar materials together, leave cardboard boxes out, and keep hazardous waste, electronics, Freon appliances, tires, propane tanks, paint, yard waste, textiles and construction debris off the pile.

A bulky collection is one cubic yard and has to be booked in your zone's window

Eligible households get two bulky collections a calendar year, each limited to one cubic yard of material, about four feet by two feet, and each address sits in one of four zones with a two-week sign-up window twice a year. Items go out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day and no more than 48 hours early, at least three feet from mailboxes, fences, parked vehicles and utility poles, without blocking the sidewalk or street, with only the items reported at scheduling collected and similar materials grouped together.

The transfer station needs a pass, and a truck or trailer also needs a permit

Every residential vehicle at the Crescent Street transfer station needs a valid City of Norwalk Residential Disposal Pass, and a residential pickup truck, SUV, cargo van or towing trailer also needs a Residential Disposal Permit issued at the station, with the vehicle brought in empty and half a tank of gas so it can be weighed. A resident car disposes of municipal solid waste free and a residential pickup or trailer gets one ton free, while commercial vehicles pay by the ton and an unregistered vehicle pays a minimum, all by credit or debit card only.

What neither city route will take

The bulky collection refuses hazardous waste, Freon appliances, electronics, tires, vehicle parts, propane tanks, yard waste, recycling materials, clothing and textiles, liquid paint and construction or remodelling debris. The transfer station refuses ammunition and explosives, hazardous materials, asbestos, counter tops, asphalt shingles, sheetrock, ceramic sinks and toilets, prescription drugs, construction and demolition debris and wet paint. Hazardous chemicals, paints, fuels and fluorescent bulbs go to the city's free household hazardous waste day instead.

Book one of the two annual bulky collections

An eligible household in the 4th Taxing District that receives city garbage collection, with up to one cubic yard of furniture, a mattress, rolled rugs, metal items, metal appliances or large plastic items.

Arrange it
Call Customer Service at (203) 854-3200, option 0, or use the Click and Request form during your zone's two-week sign-up window, then put the items out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day.

Self-haul to the Crescent Street transfer station

A Norwalk resident with a disposal pass and a load of furniture, bulky items, wood, recycling, electronics or a Freon appliance.

Cost & conditions
No charge. A resident car, compact, minivan or SUV disposes of municipal solid waste free with a Residential Disposal Pass, and a residential pickup truck, cargo van or towing trailer gets one ton free with a Residential Disposal Permit as well. Commercial vehicles pay $125 per ton, an unregistered vehicle pays a $20 or $30 minimum, and Freon appliances, tires, propane tanks, antifreeze and lithium batteries carry fees.
Arrange it
Go to 61 Crescent Street, open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the pass, and with the permit if the vehicle is a truck, cargo van or towing trailer.

Hazardous materials, asbestos, counter tops, asphalt shingles, sheetrock, ceramic fixtures, prescription drugs, construction and demolition debris and wet paint are refused, and payment is by credit or debit card only.

With a new purchase

Have a private hauler take a project or mixed load

A household or contractor with construction debris or a load neither city route accepts.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no rate for private hauling or containers and refuses construction and demolition material on both of its routes, so a hauler or container company quotes its own price; confirm the accepted material and the receiving site before booking.
Arrange it
Contact a private hauler or container company serving Norwalk and confirm where the material is taken and what it costs.

Hazardous material, electronics, Freon appliances, tires, propane tanks and wet paint still have their own city routes, so they have to be separated before a hauler takes the rest.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Norwalk handles most of this itself. Two bulky collections a year of one cubic yard each cover furniture, mattresses, rolled rugs, metal items, metal appliances and large plastic goods for households in the 4th Taxing District that receive city garbage collection, and the city recycles mattresses and box springs free at three Saturday events at the Public Works Center. The Crescent Street transfer station takes bulky items, wood, recycling, electronics and Freon appliances from residents who hold a disposal pass, with a resident car disposing of municipal solid waste free and a residential pickup or trailer getting one ton free, while Freon appliances, tires, propane tanks, antifreeze and lithium batteries carry fees. What neither route takes has its own end: construction and demolition material is refused at both, so a project needs a private hauler, and household chemicals, paints, fuels and fluorescent bulbs go to the city's free hazardous waste day on August 15 or to one of the five regional days in Westport, Greenwich, Darien, Stamford and New Canaan. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Norwalk.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Norwalk?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

Where does a Norwalk mattress go?

The city recycles mattresses and box springs free at three Saturday events in 2026, on April 18, June 6 and September 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Norwalk Public Works Center, 15 South Smith Street, for Norwalk residents only. They have to be dry and intact, and a mattress is also acceptable on one of the two annual bulky collections.Official guidance

Where does a Norwalk refrigerator go?

An appliance containing Freon, such as a refrigerator, air conditioner or dehumidifier, is on the unacceptable list for the bulky collection but is accepted at the Crescent Street transfer station for a fee. Metal appliances such as ovens, washing machines and dryers are acceptable on the bulky collection instead. Residents need a disposal pass, and a truck, van or trailer also needs a residential permit.Official guidance

Electronics are on the unacceptable list for the bulky collection and the household hazardous waste flyer sends them to the transfer station.Official guidance

No city program takes it. A private hauler or another facility is needed.Official guidance

Will Norwalk take a treadmill as a bulky item?

The bulky collection names furniture, mattresses, rolled rugs, metal items, metal appliances and large plastic items, and it does not name exercise equipment either way, so call Customer Service at (203) 854-3200 and confirm the machine before booking it into your zone's collection.Official guidance
