The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Coral Gables collects with its own Solid Waste Division, and the household trash route in front of the property is where yard debris and small household items such as furniture go, once a week on Monday through Friday. One cubic yard is included and anything beyond it is billed by the cubic yard, yard debris can go out early while household items and bagged organic material wait until after 6 p.m. the night before, and furniture and appliances are collected for a per item fee with appliances scheduled in advance. Garbage is a separate bagged stream that never takes construction debris, paint or household chemicals. The City does not handle construction material at all, and the routes for hazardous products, electronics and sharps are drop-offs: two county chemical collection centers, the city's bi-annual recycling drive-thru event in the city hall parking lot, and the fire headquarters for sharps.

Weekly trash pit, yard debris and household items

Accepted with preparation

Coral Gables collects trash from the swale in front of single-family homes once a week, and that route takes yard debris and small household items such as furniture, up to one cubic yard.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One cubic yard of trash is included with the weekly single-family collection, which is roughly three feet by three feet or the size of a standard washer or dryer. Trash beyond that is billed by the cubic yard on the utility account.
When & how
Trash is collected once a week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the address. Yard debris may go out before collection day, while household items and plastic bags holding organic matter go out only after 6 p.m. the night before.
Get it ready
Put yard debris and household items in the swale or trash pit in front of the property, and keep the pit at least five feet from trees and off drains, water meters and other utilities. Cardboard cannot go in a trash pit and can draw a violation, and construction material, paints and household chemicals are refused.

Furniture and larger household items

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is the City's example of a household item collected on the weekly trash route, with a published fee for each piece and a late-evening set-out rule.

City cost & eligibility
$50 for the published fee for each item of furniture collected as a bulk household item. Single-family homes in Coral Gables that place the piece outside after 6 p.m. the night before the scheduled trash collection day. Appliances are collected for the same per item fee but have to be scheduled in advance.
When & how
Put the furniture outside after 6 p.m. the night before the scheduled trash collection day, which runs once a week on Monday through Friday depending on the address.
Get it ready
Set the piece in the swale or trash pit in front of the property rather than on the sidewalk or in the driveway, keep it clear of trees and utilities, and keep construction material, paint and chemicals out of the load because the City refuses them on this route.

Appliances

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are collected for the same published per item fee as furniture, but the collection has to be requested in advance.

City cost & eligibility
$50 for the published fee for each appliance collected as a bulk household item. Single-family homes in Coral Gables that schedule the collection in advance with the Solid Waste Division at 305-460-5346 or pwsolidwaste@coralgables.com.
When & how
Call 305-460-5346 or email pwsolidwaste@coralgables.com to schedule the appliance collection in advance, rather than relying on the weekly trash day alone.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, secure or remove the doors, and keep the appliance out of the garbage can and the recycling bin. Keep the load to the piece itself, because construction material, paint and chemicals are refused on this route.
Trash, yard debris and household items page with the weekly collection, the placement and timing rules, the volume allowance and the furniture and appliance feesGarbage page with the kitchen and restroom stream, the bagging and weight rules, the two can limit and the placement code requirements

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

A mattress is not named in the City's household item or garbage lists, so the piece has to be confirmed before it goes to the swale.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes a per item fee for furniture and appliance collection, and a mattress is not named in that sentence or in the household item list, so confirm whether a mattress is treated as furniture at the published per item fee by calling the Solid Waste Division at 305-460-5346 or emailing pwsolidwaste@coralgables.com.
When & how
Confirm the item first, and if it is accepted, put it outside after 6 p.m. the night before the scheduled trash collection day or book it as a scheduled bulk item.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the garbage can and the recycling bin, which take only the bagged kitchen and restroom stream and the loose recyclables, and keep it dry and whole for the collection.
Trash, yard debris and household items page with the weekly collection, the placement and timing rules, the volume allowance and the furniture and appliance feesGarbage page with the kitchen and restroom stream, the bagging and weight rules, the two can limit and the placement code requirements

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics do not belong in any cart or pit, and the City routes them to its bi-annual recycling drive-thru event in the city hall parking lot.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes the bi-annual drive-thru event as the route for household hazardous waste, electronics and clothing, and it does not publish a fee for the event, so confirm the current date and whether anything is charged with the Solid Waste Division at 305-460-5346 before loading the car.
When & how
Take the devices to the city's bi-annual recycling drive-thru event, which the City says typically takes place in April and November in the city hall parking lot.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the garbage can, the trash pit and the recycling bin, all of which refuse them. Clear personal data from a computer, phone or drive before it leaves the property, and keep batteries and other hazardous items together for the same drop-off.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

Coral Gables does not pick up or dispose of construction material at all, so a project load moves through a licensed roll-off company.

City cost & eligibility
The City states plainly that it does not pick up or dispose of construction materials such as sand, concrete, soil, roofing material, plywood or other construction debris, and that the material can be disposed of by using a licensed roll-off company. No City rate or route is published, and construction material is also refused in the garbage and the trash pit, so the container and its price come from the private company.
When & how
Order the roll-off container from a licensed company before the work starts, and keep the material out of the swale, the trash pit and the garbage cans while it is on site.
Get it ready
Keep sand, concrete, soil, roofing material, plywood and other debris out of the household routes, keep paint and chemicals on the hazardous waste route instead, and secure the container and the load while it sits on the property.

Yard debris and landscape material

Accepted with preparation

Yard debris shares the weekly trash route and is the one stream that may be placed out before the collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Yard debris is part of the household trash stream, where one cubic yard is included with the weekly single-family collection and anything beyond it is billed by the cubic yard on the utility account.
When & how
Yard debris is collected once a week on Monday through Friday depending on the address, and unlike household items it may be placed out before the collection day.
Get it ready
Put the material in the swale or trash pit in front of the property rather than in the garbage can, keep the pit at least five feet from trees and off drains and utilities, and keep cardboard out of the pit because it can draw a violation.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Yard debris can go out early, household items cannot

The trash pit sits in the swale in front of the property, at least five feet from any tree and never on top of a drain, water meter or other utility. Yard debris may be placed out before the collection day, but household items and plastic bags holding organic matter may only go out after 6 p.m. the night before, and cardboard never goes in a pit at all.

Trash, yard debris and household items page with the weekly collection, the placement and timing rules, the volume allowance and the furniture and appliance fees

Garbage cans live on the side of the house

Residents buy their own garbage cans, and up to two 32-gallon cans are allowed per home. The cans stay on the side of the home and out of sight from the street rather than in the swale, the driveway or the front of the house, which the City calls a code violation. On service days, gates and pedestrian doors have to be left accessible and unlocked so the crew can reach the cans.

Garbage page with the kitchen and restroom stream, the bagging and weight rules, the two can limit and the placement code requirements

Hazardous products go to a county chemical center

Paint cans, unbroken compact fluorescent bulbs, pesticides and pool chemicals do not go in any household cart. The City directs residents to the two Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Centers, West-Dade at 8801 NW 58 Street in Doral, printed as 8801 on the city recycling page and as 8831 on the city hazardous waste page, so confirm that street number on 305-514-6666 before going, and South-Dade at 23707 SW 97th Ave in Homestead, both open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and asks residents to call before going because the centers sometimes stop accepting material.

Bi-annual recycling drive-thru event

A household with electronics, hazardous products or clothing to drop off in one trip.

Cost & conditions

Arrange it

What counts as trash in Coral Gables?

Yard debris and small household items such as furniture. How much trash can go out at once?

Where does the trash pit go?

In the swale in front of the property, at least five feet from any tree and not on top of a drain, water meter or other utility. Cardboard cannot be placed in a trash pit at all, and doing so can result in a violation.Official guidance

How should household garbage be bagged?

How do I get rid of an appliance in Coral Gables?

Call the Solid Waste Division at 305-460-5346 or email pwsolidwaste@coralgables.com and schedule the collection in advance, because appliances have to be booked rather than simply set out. The published fee is the same per item charge as furniture.Official guidance

To the city's bi-annual recycling drive-thru event, which the City says typically takes place in April and November in the city hall parking lot and which also takes household hazardous waste and clothing. Hazardous items, electronics and clothing go to the bi-annual drive-thru event, and the two county chemical collection centers also take household chemical products such as paint and pool chemicals.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Coral Gables?
