Accepted curbside items are large televisions other than projection televisions, large monitors, desktop computer towers, printers, and countertop microwaves smaller than one cubic foot. Refused curbside are small items that can be carried to a drop off center such as cell phones, keyboards, cables and remote controls, projection televisions, electronics with broken screens, satellite dishes, gas engine items, large appliances, vacuum cleaners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers and commercial sized printers, copiers or fax machines. Remove or erase personal information before a device is recycled.
Appliances and large electronics need an appointment
Appliances and large electronics are collected by appointment rather than with the bulk pile, generally on the regular garbage day and at no additional cost. The appliance request is due by noon the day before, and the electronics request by 10 a.m. the day before, with electronics limited to ten items and kept separate from bulk material.

Household hazardous waste and electronics from residents, and the city notes that drop off is free for Gainesville and Alachua County residents and that the five rural collection centers also take electronics, while neighbouring county residents use Toxic Round-Up events.
Only very small quantity generator businesses pay for disposal, and those businesses have to comply with county code, the Florida Administrative Code and the federal hazardous waste rules. The city reminds residents never to put hazardous waste in the trash, out at the curb or down a drain or storm sewer, and that landfilling motor oil, car batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury, medical waste, liquid waste, tires, white goods and yard waste is banned in Florida.
