The local disposal guide
Gainesville runs one of the most generous curbside programs in the country: bulk waste such as furniture, mattresses, treadmills, grills and large toys is collected every week on the regular garbage day, at the curb by 7 a.m., with no appointment and no additional cost. The accepted list even covers interior do it yourself remodeling debris such as toilets, sinks, cabinets and carpet, within tight limits, while exterior home materials, contractor waste and hazardous products are refused. Appliances and large electronics are collected separately, by appointment on the same day as the garbage route, and small electronics plus paint, chemicals, batteries and motor oil go to the Alachua County household hazardous waste center on Northeast 63rd Avenue. Tires, scrap metal and other heavy loads go to the county's Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station, which publishes its own per ton and per tire fees.
