Lakeland collects its own garbage, recycling and yard waste every week inside the city limits, and it adds four free bulk collections a year of up to 20 cubic yards each for furniture, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, couches, chairs, tree limbs and even construction debris with the nails bent over. Appliances are different: refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, washers, dryers and small appliances are picked up by a special bulk truck for recycling and have to be curbside before the collection. Anything beyond the four free collections is charged by the cubic yard with a published minimum, and household chemicals, paint, batteries, propane and electronics never go in a cart: those go to the Polk County household hazardous waste facility at the North Central Landfill in Winter Haven, or to one of the county's collection events, which return to the Lakeland Solid Waste site on Evelyn Avenue in February 2027.
