The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Miami Beach contracts residential garbage and recycling to a private hauler and contracts bulk waste and yard trash to Waste Connections of Florida, which takes the scheduling calls itself. Every property is entitled to six free bulk pickups a year, bulk waste goes out no more than 24 hours before the pickup, and the definition covers furniture including sofas, chairs and mattresses, household appliances including refrigerators with the doors removed, and do-it-yourself remodeling material. The city also runs a free bulk drop-off on the first weekend of every month at two sites, while hazardous household chemicals go to city collection events three times a year or to the two Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Centers, which take electronics as well.

Bulky items and how they leave

Accepted with preparation

Waste Connections of Florida collects bulk waste under a city contract, each property gets six free bulk pickups a year, and the city also runs a free bulk drop-off on the first weekend of every month.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Miami Beach residential properties, with six free bulk pickups a year scheduled through Waste Connections of Florida and the free monthly bulk drop-off for residents who show proof of Miami Beach residency. Buildings with nine units or more use their own private service.
When & how
Call Waste Connections of Florida at 786.515.2726 to schedule a bulk pickup and put the load out no more than 24 hours before the collection day, or take bulk trash to the monthly drop-off at 140 MacArthur Causeway on Terminal Isle or 75 Street and Dickens Avenue on the first weekend of the month from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the load to the accepted categories: large bush and tree cuttings and yard trash that cannot be canned or bagged, appliances with the doors removed on cooling units, do-it-yourself remodeling material with carpeting cut to six foot lengths and drywall or lumber no longer than five feet or 40 pounds, and furniture. Tree removal, land clearing, building demolition, contractor work, chemicals, paint, car parts, tires, batteries and boats do not belong in the pile, and violations carry fines plus removal costs.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named inside the city's bulk waste definition, so a couch or chair travels on one of the six free bulk pickups or goes to the monthly drop-off.

Keep the furniture free of the excluded material, because tires, car parts, paint and chemicals are refused at the drop-off and outside the bulk definition, and keep the pile tidy on the property rather than in the street. Violations of the set-out rules carry fines of 50 to 1000 dollars plus removal costs.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named inside the city's bulk waste definition alongside furniture, so the mattress route is the same free bulk pickup.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Miami Beach residential properties, with mattresses collected inside the six free bulk pickups a year and the free monthly drop-off, and buildings with nine units or more using their own private service.
When & how

Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the yard trash pile, which has its own bundle and bag rules, and keep it clear of chemicals, paint, tires and car parts, because those are refused at the drop-off and outside the bulk definition.

Appliances including cooling units

Accepted with preparation

Household appliances are named in the bulk waste definition, and refrigerators are accepted with their doors removed, so a cooling unit has an explicit route rather than an inherited one.

City cost & eligibility

When & how
Call Waste Connections of Florida at 786.515.2726 to book the appliance pickup and put it out no more than 24 hours before, or take it to a monthly drop-off weekend at one of the two sites.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator before it goes out, because the city names refrigerators with the doors removed in the bulk definition, and keep the appliance free of paint, chemicals, tires and car parts, which are refused at the drop-off.
Bulk waste pickup page with the Waste Connections contract and booking number, the six free pickups a year, the 24 hour set-out rule, the bulk waste definition covering furniture, appliances and remodeling material, the exclusions for demolition, contractor work, tires and chemicals, the nine unit building rule, the yard trash limits and the fine schedule

Televisions, computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are not part of the bulk waste definition and go to the two Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Centers, which take computers, monitors, televisions and printers.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the city nor the county publishes a rate for the Home Chemical Collection Centers, and electronics are not part of the city bulk waste service. Confirm any charge with Miami-Dade County before the trip.
When & how
Take the device to the West Dade Home Chemical Collection Center on 8801 NW 58 Street in Doral or the South Dade centre on 23707 SW 97th Ave, Gate B, in Homestead, both open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city also runs hazardous waste collection events three times a year.
Get it ready
Pack containers upright in sturdy boxes with tight lids and label everything, keep electronics out of the bulk pile and the yard trash pile, and note that businesses are not allowed to use the county centres. Newer household chemicals in good condition are given away free through the county's Chem Again programme rather than sold.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on any city or county list, so the machine has to be confirmed against the bulk service before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no list that names exercise equipment and no bulky item price, so the machine has to be confirmed. Call Waste Connections of Florida at 786.515.2726 to ask whether it is collected as bulk waste inside the six free pickups a year, or the Sanitation Division at 305.673.7616 with any question about the rules.
When & how
Call 786.515.2726 before the machine goes out, and if it is accepted set it out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup day, away from the yard trash pile.
Get it ready
Describe the machine and its weight when you call, remove any console or battery pack so the electronics travel to the county centre instead, and keep the item clear of the street and of excluded material such as tires, car parts and chemicals.
Bulk waste pickup page with the Waste Connections contract and booking number, the six free pickups a year, the 24 hour set-out rule, the bulk waste definition covering furniture, appliances and remodeling material, the exclusions for demolition, contractor work, tires and chemicals, the nine unit building rule, the yard trash limits and the fine scheduleSanitation Division page with the contracted residential collection, the division phone and after hours line, the free monthly bulk drop-off at two sites with its proof of residency rule and 2026 dates, and the refusal of chemicals, tires, paints and car parts at the drop-off

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Building demolition, land clearing and contractor work are expressly outside the city bulk waste service, so property owners and contractors use the building's private service or one of the two licensed commercial haulers.

City cost & eligibility
The city excludes contractor and demolition material from the bulk service and publishes no rate for the private haulers, so each licensed commercial hauler sets its own container and hauling price. Confirm the container size, the hauling charge and the receiving site with the hauler before the work starts.
When & how
Contact the service provider for the building, or one of the two licensed commercial haulers the city lists: Waste Management of Dade County at 8801 NW 91 Street in Medley on 786-450-5699, or Waste Connection at 3840 NW 37 Court in Miami on 305.638.3800.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the bulk pile and out of the free monthly drop-off, because both refuse demolition and contractor waste, and keep paint, chemicals, tires and car parts out of the load. Buildings with nine units or more have to use their own private service rather than the city bulk contract.

Paints, chemicals, batteries and sharps

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals never go in the trash and are taken to city collection events three times a year or to the two Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Centers.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the city nor the county publishes a rate for the hazardous waste events or the Home Chemical Collection Centers. Confirm the arrangements with the Sanitation Division at 305.673.7616 for the city events, or with Miami-Dade County for the permanent centres, before loading the car.
When & how
Use one of the city hazardous waste collection events, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 40 Street and Chase Avenue surface lot, or drive to the West Dade centre on 8801 NW 58 Street in Doral or the South Dade centre on 23707 SW 97th Ave, Gate B, open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep auto batteries, fuels, gasoline, oil filters, used motor oil and antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticides, weed killer, rodent bait, fluorescent lights, oil based paint, paint thinner, mercury thermometers and wood preservatives out of the trash, the cart and the bulk pile. Empty aerosols can go in the trash, and unusable liquid latex paint should be dried out with absorbent material before the can goes in the waste cart.

Bulk waste is booked, not put out at will

Waste Connections of Florida collects bulk waste and yard trash for the city, bulk pickup is scheduled by calling 786.515.2726, and each property is entitled to six free bulk pickups a year. Bulk waste goes out no more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup, and yard trash goes out no more than 24 hours before 7 a.m. on the pickup day, bagged, canned or bundled under 50 pounds with bundles no longer than four feet and limbs no thicker than four inches. Violations carry fines of 50 to 1000 dollars plus the cost of any removal the city has to carry out.

What counts as bulk waste, and what does not

Bulk waste covers large bush and tree cuttings and yard trash that cannot be canned, bagged or bundled in four foot lengths, household appliances such as ranges, water heaters and refrigerators with the doors removed, do-it-yourself remodeling material including carpeting cut to six foot lengths, drywall and lumber no longer than five feet or 40 pounds, and furniture including sofas, chairs and mattresses. It does not include tree removal, land clearing, building demolition, chemical waste, paint, automobiles and automotive parts, tires, batteries, boats, biological waste or any work done by a contractor.

Buildings and contractors use their own service

Buildings with nine units or more on private garbage collection have to contact their own service provider for bulk and yard waste pickup instead of using the city contract, and the city licenses two private haulers for apartments, condos and commercial property: Waste Management of Dade County on 786-450-5699 and Waste Connection on 305.638.3800. Recycling for commercial or private trash service is arranged by the building owner or association, and contractor and demolition material has to be disposed of through that private service rather than the city bulk pile.

The county centres take the chemicals and the electronics

The two Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Centers, West Dade on 8801 NW 58 Street in Doral and South Dade on 23707 SW 97th Ave, Gate B, in Homestead, are open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They take oil based and liquid latex paints, pesticides, solvents, pool chemicals, propane tanks, empty oxygen tanks, small batteries, unbroken fluorescent bulbs and electronics including monitors, televisions, computers, printers and phones. Containers must be packed upright in sturdy boxes with tight lids and labelled, businesses are not allowed to use the centres, and usable products are given away free through the Chem Again programme.
