Appliances are collected on request rather than on the weekly large item day, and the city's request list includes appliances, water heaters, lawn mowers and grills. The pickup is usually made within a day or two of the call, weekends excluded. A device that contains refrigerant is not picked up curbside and goes to the Orange County Landfill instead.

Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors before it goes out, and keep it clear of the mailbox, trees and other obstructions so the truck can reach it. A unit that contains refrigerant, such as an air conditioner, freezer or refrigerator, is not collected at the curb: the county asks that the delivery company remove the old appliance, and a resident may bring the device to the Orange County Landfill, where a minimum charge applies.
Everything meant for collection goes to the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. at the latest, and comes back in no later than 7 p.m. the same day. The container faces the house with the handle outward, sits clear of the mailbox, trees and anything else in the truck's way, and holds household trash only, because garbage set on the ground or on top of the container is not collected.
