The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Winter Garden runs its own collection rather than contracting it out. Household trash comes twice a week, and yard waste and large items share a single weekly pickup that is where a couch, a mattress or a roll of carpet goes, with no appointment needed. Appliances and electronics are the exception, because those have to be requested by phone and are usually collected within a day or two. Everything goes to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day and comes back in by 7 p.m. that day, the container has to hold the trash inside it, and a container holding yard waste, liquids or building material is left unemptied. Household chemicals stay out of the city system entirely and go free to Orange County's hazardous waste sites, which also take electronics.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the city's large item examples and goes out on the weekly yard waste and large item pickup, which needs no appointment. The service is part of the residential account billed on the monthly city water bill.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service that appears on the monthly city water bill, with large items taken once a week alongside yard waste and no charge published for an ordinary piece.
When & how
Set the piece at the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. that day, then bring anything left back in by 7 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the piece clear of the mailbox and trees so the truck can reach it, keep it out of the container because only household trash goes inside, and remember that a container holding yard waste, liquids or building material is not emptied.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named directly in the city's large item examples, so a mattress or box spring rides the same weekly large item pickup as furniture without an appointment.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed on the monthly city water bill, as part of the once a week large item collection.
When & how
Put the unit at the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. that morning, and bring it back in if it is not collected by 7 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the unit dry and wrapped so it can be handled, count a mattress and box spring as separate pieces when setting them out, and keep it out of the trash container, which is for household trash only.
City residential waste collection page with the twice weekly trash, the weekly yard waste and large item route, the appliance and electronics request line, the set out rules and the container content limits

Washers, dryers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are collected on request rather than on the weekly large item day, and the city's request list includes appliances, water heaters, lawn mowers and grills. The pickup is usually made within a day or two of the call, weekends excluded. A device that contains refrigerant is not picked up curbside and goes to the Orange County Landfill instead.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed on the monthly city water bill, with the appliance pickup arranged by phone rather than as part of the routine large item set out.
When & how
Call 407-656-2256 to request the collection, and expect the pickup within a day or two of the request, not counting weekends.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors before it goes out, and keep it clear of the mailbox, trees and other obstructions so the truck can reach it. A unit that contains refrigerant, such as an air conditioner, freezer or refrigerator, is not collected at the curb: the county asks that the delivery company remove the old appliance, and a resident may bring the device to the Orange County Landfill, where a minimum charge applies.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Televisions, computers and other electronics must be requested by phone rather than set out on the weekly route, and Orange County's hazardous waste sites and events also take electronics free, with one published television exception.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service when the pickup is requested at 407-656-2256, and free to Orange County residents at the county's community collection events and drop off locations.
When & how
Call 407-656-2256 for the city pickup, usually within a day or two of the request, or use an Orange County hazardous waste site, which accepts electronics along with household chemicals.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before handover, keep electronics out of the blue lid recycling cart, and note that a rear projection television cannot be recycled at the county sites and goes out as a large item pickup instead.

Construction and renovation material

Not on the regular city route

Construction material has no curbside route, and the city states that a container holding building materials will not be emptied, so a project load moves in the city roll-off open-top dumpster, goes to the county landfill, or rides on a private haul.

City cost & eligibility
The city makes no charge for construction debris because it does not collect it: containers with building materials are simply not emptied. The Orange County landfill at 5901 Young Pine Road prices a self hauled load on its own fee schedule, and a private container company quotes its own rate, so confirm the amount before the load leaves the property.
When & how
Order the city roll-off open-top dumpster on 407-656-2256 extension 2009, which is billed to the city utilities account, or self haul to the Orange County landfill, which is open to non-account customers Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep building material out of the city container entirely, because a container holding it is left unemptied, and keep liquids and hazardous leftovers out of the load as well since those also invalidate the container.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's large item examples, which stop at furniture, mattresses and carpeting, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No city list or price names an exercise machine. The large item examples are furniture, mattresses and carpeting, so confirm with Winter Garden Public Services at 407-656-2256 whether a machine is accepted on the weekly large item day or needs a requested collection instead.
When & how
Call 407-656-2256 during business hours before the collection day, and put the machine out only once it is confirmed.
Get it ready
Break the machine down so it can be handled, take off any console or screen so it does not travel as household trash, and keep the frame out of the container.

Bulk items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

The weekly yard waste and large item pickup is the city's bulky route: furniture, mattresses, carpeting and oversized cardboard boxes go out beside the container once a week with no appointment, while appliances and electronics need a phone request.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed on the monthly city water bill, once a week alongside yard waste, with a second container available for an additional monthly fee.
When & how
Set the items at the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. that morning, and bring them in if they are not collected by 7 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the set out clear of the mailbox and trees, keep loose trash inside the container only, and move small boxes such as cereal and shoe boxes into the container while large boxes can go out for bulk collection. Hazardous waste is never collected and goes to the county instead.
City residential waste collection page with the twice weekly trash, the weekly yard waste and large item route, the appliance and electronics request line, the set out rules and the container content limits

Yard waste and limbs

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste shares the weekly large item pickup day, with branches stacked neatly and grass and leaves bagged. A pile larger than three cubic yards carries an added charge, and tree work by a contractor is the contractor's responsibility.

City cost & eligibility
Routine yard waste is part of the residential service, but the city states that there is an additional charge for picking up piles larger than three cubic yards, without publishing the amount, so confirm the overage with Public Services at 407-656-2256, extension 2009, before the pile goes out.
When & how
Set yard waste at the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. that morning, on the same weekly day as the large items.
Get it ready
Stack branches and limbs neatly next to the curb, bag grass clippings and leaves because loose material is not picked up, and keep the pile within three cubic yards. A contractor hired to remove a tree is responsible for disposing of its debris.
City residential waste collection page with the twice weekly trash, the weekly yard waste and large item route, the appliance and electronics request line, the set out rules and the container content limits

Paint, chemicals and batteries

Accepted with preparation

The city does not collect hazardous waste at all, so paint, batteries, cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides, light bulbs and motor oil go free to Orange County's hazardous waste sites and community events.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Orange County residents at the county's community collection events and drop off locations, which take paint products, pesticides, propane tanks, cooking oil, fluorescent bulbs, car fluids, rechargeable batteries with taped lithium terminals, cleaning fluids, pool chemicals and electronics.
When & how
Use an Orange County hazardous waste site, which accepts material Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the county landfill on Young Pine Road, or a published community collection event.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of every curbside container, because the city does not collect it and a container holding liquids is not emptied, and tape the terminals of lithium batteries and keep them separate from other batteries as the county asks.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Set out by 7 a.m. and bring it back in by 7 p.m.

Everything meant for collection goes to the curb the evening before the collection day or by 7 a.m. at the latest, and comes back in no later than 7 p.m. the same day. The container faces the house with the handle outward, sits clear of the mailbox, trees and anything else in the truck's way, and holds household trash only, because garbage set on the ground or on top of the container is not collected.

City residential waste collection page with the twice weekly trash, the weekly yard waste and large item route, the appliance and electronics request line, the set out rules and the container content limits

The container takes household trash and nothing else

Only household trash belongs in the city issued container, and a container holding yard waste, liquids or building materials will not be emptied. A second container can be requested for an additional monthly fee, missed pickups are reported the day after collection rather than the same day, and door side pickup is available for residents who are physically unable to move their containers.

City residential waste collection page with the twice weekly trash, the weekly yard waste and large item route, the appliance and electronics request line, the set out rules and the container content limits

Appliances and electronics need a phone request

Appliances and electronics are the one part of the service that cannot simply be set out with the weekly large items. The city asks residents to call 407-656-2256 to request the pickup, which is usually made within a day or two of the call and not counting weekends, and the list includes appliances, televisions, computers, vacuum cleaners, water heaters, lawn mowers and grills.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Winter Garden keeps almost everything at the curb. Trash goes out twice a week, and yard waste and large items share one weekly pickup where furniture, mattresses, carpeting and oversized cardboard boxes are taken with no appointment, provided the pile is at the curb by 7 a.m. and clear of the mailbox and trees. Appliances and electronics are the exception, because they are collected only after a request to 407-656-2256, usually within a day or two and never on weekends. Self hauling means driving to Orange County: the landfill on Young Pine Road in Orlando takes general and construction loads on its own fee schedule, and the same site plus the county's community events take household hazardous waste free, including paint, batteries, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil and electronics. How does Winter Garden collect a couch?

On the weekly yard waste and large item pickup, with no appointment needed. Furniture is one of the city's own examples, the set out goes to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day and comes back in by 7 p.m., and the service is part of the account billed on the monthly city water bill.Official guidance

Will Winter Garden take a mattress at the curb?

Yes. Mattresses are on the city's large item list along with furniture and carpeting, and they go out on the weekly large item collection with no appointment. The container takes household trash only, so the mattress goes beside it at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day.Official guidance

Do appliances need an appointment in Winter Garden?

Yes. Appliances are collected on request rather than with the weekly large item set out, and the city asks residents to call 407-656-2256, with pickup usually within a day or two of the request and not counting weekends. Water heaters, lawn mowers and grills are on the same request list. A device containing refrigerant, such as an air conditioner, freezer or refrigerator, is not collected curbside, and the county landfill takes it for a minimum charge.Official guidance

Where do Winter Garden televisions and computers go?

On a requested collection through 407-656-2256, where televisions and computers are on the city's appliance and electronics list and pickup usually follows within a day or two. Orange County's hazardous waste sites and events also take electronics free, except that rear projection televisions cannot be recycled there and should go out as a large item pickup instead.Official guidance

Do large items need an appointment in Winter Garden?

No for furniture, mattresses, carpeting and large boxes, which go out on the weekly large item day with no scheduling. Yes for appliances and electronics, which the city collects only on request through 407-656-2256, usually within a day or two and not counting weekends.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Winter Garden?

The city itself, through the residential collection service billed on the monthly city water bill: household trash twice a week, and yard waste with large items once a week. Container requests and missed pickups go to 407-656-2256, and same day missed pickup reports are not accepted.Official guidance

What counts as a large item in Winter Garden?

The city's examples are furniture, mattresses and carpeting, and large cardboard boxes that will not fit the container may go out for bulk collection too, while small boxes such as cereal and shoe boxes go in the container. There is no need to schedule those items, and they ride the same weekly pickup as yard waste.Official guidance

Which items need a phone request?

Appliances and electronics. The city asks residents to call 407-656-2256 to request those pickups, which usually happen within a day or two and not counting weekends, and the list covers appliances, televisions, computers, vacuum cleaners, water heaters, lawn mowers and grills.Official guidance

What can go in the Winter Garden container?

Household trash only, inside the container rather than on the ground or on the lid. A container holding yard waste, liquids or building materials will not be emptied, hazardous waste is never collected at all, and the container has to sit clear of the mailbox, trees and anything else that would block the truck.Official guidance

Is there a charge for a big yard waste pile?

Yes, piles larger than three cubic yards carry an additional charge that the city does not publish an amount for, so call 407-656-2256, extension 2009, to confirm it. Routine yard waste is part of the weekly service with branches stacked neatly and grass and leaves bagged, and a contractor removing a tree is responsible for that debris.Official guidance

What can I take to the county myself?

Construction and general loads go to the Orange County landfill at 5901 Young Pine Road, which is open to non-account customers Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the county fee schedule, and the same site takes household hazardous waste free during those hours, including paint, batteries, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil and electronics.Official guidance
