The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Clermont runs its own sanitation department and charges a flat monthly rate that makes the curbside program unusually generous: one trash cart and one recycle cart in any of three sizes for 29.78 a month, and bulk items such as gas grills, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, mattresses and furniture go out with the regular collection at no extra charge. Electronic waste is collected the same way, with televisions, computers, stereos and fax machines set unboxed at the curb before 7 a.m. on the pickup day. What the city will not take is important: building materials, tires, motor oil and hazardous waste all have to go to a separate facility, and the city names the Log House Road Transfer Station in Clermont for hazardous products and the Central Facilities Landfill in Tavares for both hazardous and construction waste.

City garbage and recycling carts

Accepted with preparation

The city sanitation department collects one trash cart and one recycle cart at a flat monthly residential rate, in 35, 65 or 95 gallon sizes, with extra carts available for an added charge.

City cost & eligibility
From $29.78 for the monthly residential sanitation rate for one trash cart and one recycling cart. An additional cart in any of the three sizes costs 15.68 a month. The commercial rate is 41.80 a month with additional carts at 17.77 each. The city uses automated trucks, so an extra green can is ordered through utility billing at 352-241-7320.
When & how
Garbage, recycling and bulk items go to the curb before 7 a.m. on the designated collection day.
Get it ready
Use only the city issued green cart, with the handle facing the house so the truck's hydraulic arm can grab it, and keep the cart clear of the mailbox, other containers and low hanging limbs and lines. The city website asks for four feet of clearance from any object, vehicle, sign or light pole, while the printed 2025 guide says three feet from any object, sign pole or post. Do not set out extra bags or non city containers, and keep liquids, building materials, dead animals and hazardous material out of the cart.

Bulk items at the curb

Accepted with preparation

The city collects bulk items such as gas grills, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, mattresses and furniture with the regular collection at no extra charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulk items are included in the monthly residential sanitation rate rather than billed separately, and the city publishes no per item charge. A contractor who performs an installation is responsible for removing that waste rather than leaving it at the curb.
When & how
Set bulk items out no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day, away from the green cart and clear of the mailbox.
Get it ready
Bundle carpet and padding into sections no longer than four feet. Keep building materials, tires, motor oil and hazardous products out of the pile entirely, because the city cannot collect them and they have to go to a separate facility.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the city's bulk item list and goes out with the regular collection at no extra charge.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture is a bulk item included in the monthly residential sanitation rate, with no per item charge published.
When & how
Set the piece out before 7 a.m. on the collection day, clear of the green cart and the mailbox.
Get it ready
Keep the piece away from low hanging limbs and lines and at least four feet from any object, vehicle, sign or light pole, because the truck needs room to work. Bundle any loose carpet or padding that goes with the furniture into sections of four feet or less.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Mattresses are named in the city's bulk item list and go out with the regular collection, and the county's central facility also takes them.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A mattress is a bulk item included in the monthly residential sanitation rate, with no per item charge published. The county's central facility also accepts mattresses and box springs, while the county drop off centers refuse them.
When & how
Set the mattress out before 7 a.m. on the collection day, clear of the green cart and the mailbox.
Get it ready
Keep the set dry and out of the yard waste pile, because yard waste is shredded for mulch and a mattress contaminates that stream. Count it as a bulk item rather than household waste.

Appliances and household equipment

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, water heaters and gas grills are all named in the city's bulk item list and go out with the regular collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances are bulk items included in the monthly residential sanitation rate, with no per item charge published. The county drop off centers refuse appliances, so the city route or the county's central facility is the path for one.
When & how
Set the appliance out before 7 a.m. on the collection day, clear of the green cart, the mailbox and any overhead line or limb.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, remove or secure the doors so nothing can be trapped inside, and check that the propane tank has been removed from a gas grill. A contractor who installs a replacement unit is responsible for removing the old appliance.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

The city collects electronic waste at the curb, unboxed on the sidewalk, on the scheduled pickup day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronic waste collection is part of the city sanitation service at no extra charge, and the county drop off centers also accept electronics from county residents with proof of residency.
When & how
Place the items unboxed along the curb before 7 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day, and use the county mobile unit or a drop off center for anything the city's own pickup does not cover.
Get it ready
The city lists televisions, DVD players, VCRs, computers, stereos, CD players and fax machines, so keep the device whole and handle it carefully so glass components do not shatter. Wipe personal data before a computer leaves the house.

Tires

Not on the regular city route

Tires are one of the items the city cannot collect at the curb, so a tire goes to a county site with residency proof and quantity limits.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no tire rate because it cannot collect tires at all. Lake County limits passenger tires of 40 inches or less to five per year at its drop off centers for residents with proof of residency, accepts more at the central facility for a fee, and references a fee schedule rather than a quoted figure, so confirm the current charge with Lake County Solid Waste at 352-343-3776 before taking a tire.
When & how
Do not set a tire at the curb. Take it to a Lake County site during its open hours, or ask the tire retailer that sold or mounted it about a take back.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the green cart and off the bulky pile, and check the size and quantity limits before loading, because the drop off centers take only passenger tires of 40 inches or less up to five a year and send the rest to the central facility.

Construction material and renovation debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction waste is not collected curbside, the Log House Road site refuses it, and the city sends it to the Central Facilities Landfill in Tavares.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no rate for construction waste because it does not collect it. Drywall, sinks, countertops, tile, form board and mirrors are named as construction waste that goes to the Central Facilities Landfill at 13130 County Landfill Road in Tavares, where the county states that construction and demolition debris is accepted at the Central Facility for a charge, so confirm the current charge at 352-343-3776.
When & how
Take the load to the Central Facilities Landfill in Tavares, open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and do not bring it to the Log House Road Transfer Station, which accepts no construction material.
Get it ready
Keep construction debris out of the green cart and off the bulky pile, and keep a contractor's debris with the contractor, because a contractor performing the work is responsible for removing the resulting waste.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulk item list, so the machine has to be confirmed with the sanitation department.

City cost & eligibility
No published rate covers an exercise machine and the city does not name the category, so call the sanitation department at 352-241-0178 and ask whether the machine can be collected as a bulk item before it goes to the curb.
When & how
Call 352-241-0178 with the machine type and size, and set it out only if the city confirms it as a bulk item.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it, and leave it clear of the green cart, the mailbox and any overhead line so the truck has room to work.

Green carts out by 7 a.m. with the handle facing the house

Only the city issued green cart is collected, because the trucks use a hydraulic arm: the trash cart is green with a green lid, the recycle cart is green with a yellow lid, the handle faces the house, and the cart stays clear of the mailbox, low branches, low lines and other obstacles, with the city website asking for four feet of clearance and the printed 2025 guide saying three feet.

Take hazardous products to the Log House Road Transfer Station

A household with paint, paint thinners, cooking oil, used motor oil, batteries, antifreeze, cleaning fluids, aerosol sprays, propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides or tires to dispose of.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no rate for these items because it does not collect them, and Lake County applies quantity limits at its sites with a fee schedule referenced rather than quoted, so call Lake County Solid Waste at 352-343-3776 or the transfer station at 352-394-5137 to confirm what applies to the load.
Arrange it
Drive to 10435 Log House Road in Clermont, which Lake County lists as open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the city guide still prints Wednesdays and Saturdays, so call 352-394-5137 before a trip. There is no construction material accepted at the Log House Road site, and the county limits what a household may bring: paint at 10 gallons a day at a center or 50 gallons a year at the central site, motor oil and gasoline at 10 gallons a day or 60 gallons a year, antifreeze, lawn chemicals, pesticides and pool chemicals at 10 gallons a day or 20 gallons a year, propane tanks at two a day or with no limit centrally, batteries at two a day or with no limit centrally, and aerosol cans at five a day. Products travel in the original container and in the rear of the vehicle.

A contractor or homeowner with drywall, sinks, countertops, tile, form board, mirrors or other construction waste that the city will not collect.

What the city cannot take is where the trips come in. Tires, motor oil, paint, thinners, batteries, antifreeze, cleaning fluids, aerosols, propane tanks, pool chemicals and pesticides go to the Log House Road Transfer Station at 10435 Log House Road in Clermont, which Lake County now lists as open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the city guide still prints Wednesdays and Saturdays, so call 352-394-5137 before a trip, or to the county's central household hazardous waste center at 13130 County Landfill Road in Tavares, open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., where household limits apply and a larger quantity can be dropped. Construction waste is not collected curbside and the Log House Road Transfer Station accepts none, so drywall, sinks, countertops, tile, form board and mirrors go to the Central Facilities Landfill at 13130 County Landfill Road in Tavares, open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., where the county accepts construction and demolition debris for a charge.Official guidance
