The local disposal guide
The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department collects trash in a blue roll cart with a black lid and recycling in a green cart with a yellow lid, runs a separate leaf and limb route, and collects bulky waste by request under a program funded through property taxes. Bulky waste takes furniture, couches, mattresses and box springs, appliances, large electronics, exercise equipment and other oversized household items, up to five items per pickup with four free pickups a year, while bagged trash, batteries, construction and demolition debris, hazardous materials, automotive components, liquids, tires and leaf and limb material are refused. Paint, chemicals, batteries, tires, propane tanks and small electronics do not go in the carts or the bulky pile: they go to the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials at 1005 College Avenue, and construction and demolition material goes to the Oglethorpe County C&D Landfill because the ACC Landfill does not accept it.
